Internet reaches Sikkim

Email this story to a friend. Due to the expansion plan undertaken by the Department of Telecommunications, the remote Himalayan state of Sikkim is all set to usher in the state-of-the-art communication technology.

In addition to the benefits of modern communication services, people of the state will soon be able to access the Internet too.

Talking to reporters, Telecom District Manager (Sikkim Circle) Mahesh Kumar Seth said this has become possible due to a record growth of almost 200 per cent in telecommunication services in this eastern Himalayan state during the last one year.

All telephone exchanges in the state will become digital by March 2000. The network will be upgraded to accommodate 'integrated services digital network', or ISDN, to provide facilities like videophotophone, computer networking and television besides the Internet connections, he explained.

All district headquarters in Sikkim will have access to the Internet from June onwards, he said.

''Despite staff shortage, we have overcome hurdles to reach inaccessible hilly terrain. With the introduction of the ISDN facility, all communication technologies would become available at the consumers' doorsteps. The growth of 'subscriber trunk dial' channels," he said, "has doubled for outside Sikkim and increased by ten folds within the state.''

"All four district headquarters now have direct dialling facilities with Gangtok,'' he added.
