PC sales rise by 37 per cent

Email this page to a friend. Over 800,000 PCs were sold during fiscal 1997-98, a 37 per cent growth over 1996-97, according to a survey conducted by the Business and Industrial Research Division of IMRB.

The highlights of the survey are:

Big Blue cuts red tape
37% more PCs sold
CMC plans resurrection
$11 m for BPL project
The home market tripled during the year with over 170,000 PCs bought in 1997-98.

Pentiums dominate with 86 per cent of the machines based on the chip.

Colour monitors now are twice as popular as monochrome. And inkjet printers are three times ahead of laser printers in the 400,000-strong printer market.

Desktop PC sales have grown by 37 per cent over the last year to reach a level of about 800,000.

The greater than 5 million-population towns, namely the four metros of New Delhi, Bombay, Madras and Calcutta, continue to dominate with about 71 per cent of the national sales localised there.

Businesses have been responsible for 80 per cent of desktop sales, while about 170,000 were sold to homes in 1997-98, accounting for almost 21 per cent.

The sales for 1997-98 were over three times what the household sector bought in 1996-97.

Printer sales during 1997-98 were as many as half the number of desktop PCs and 55 per cent of the market was accounted for by dot matrix printers.

Inkjet printers, however, continued to exercise their dominance and accounted for 34 per cent of the total sales, three times more than that of laser printers.

For every three desktops sold to households, a printer was sold as well.
