IIM-B has also started a Centre for Software Management that will function as a repository of knowledge gained by the institute's faculty in software engineering, project management and management in different functional areas.

CSM is funded through an endowment sponsored by Wipro Corporation, Oracle Software India Development Centre and Silicon Automation Systems.

The PGSM will run on Fridays and weekends. The first batch has been selected from 135 software companies in Bangalore.

"The Indian software industry is at a crossroads today. Paradigms that accounted for success in the past are being challenged by quantum increase in competition,'' Wipro Chairman Azim Premji said in his inaugural address. "India needs planned action if we wish to retain our competitive advantage in the global market.''

Premji said for a long time India's competitive advantage has been based on the ability to offer low-cost labour. "Success based on this advantage will not take us far," he said.

He added, "If we look at China, Mexico and the CIS countries we find they are fast catching up. In addition, their productivity and discipline is of a higher order. We need to upgrade the quality of our people to manage large, complex projects.''

In his address, N Vittal, chairman, Public Enterprise Selection Board, said the programme is an idea whose time has come. He said such a programme should not be restricted to Bangalore, but offered over the Internet too.
