UAE puts up password-free Net access service

Computer users in the United Arab Emirates can now access the Internet even without a regular subscription to the service provided by Etisalat, the emirate's telecommunications corporation.

Now, all that is required to surf the Web is dialling up a given number and getting instant access to the emirate's Internet service.

The new 'dial 'n surf' service was launched on Saturday and is aimed at offering Etisalat customers a choice in the way they access the Internet.

The new service does not require any user identification or password. All that a customer needs is a computer with a modem and a regular telephone or ISDN line.

The facility is, in particular, aimed at occasional Internet users and people visiting the UAE.

Earlier, people wishing to access the Internet in the UAE needed an account with Etisalat.

Subscribers have to pay a minimum of 85 dirhams a month for the service, for which they get 14 hours of Internet access. If they cross that limit, they have to pay at the rate of 6 dirhams an hour.

Those using the dial 'n surf facility will have to pay at the rate of 0.30 dirhams a minute, which will be billed to the telephone line from which the call is made, an Etisalat announcement added.
