At the opening of the dedicated TPF centre at NIIT's software factory, Bob Holder, general manager, information management, British Airways said, ''We are very pleased with our association with NIIT and are impressed with their commitment to quality and customer satisfaction. TPF is a unique and challenging environment, critical to our operations.''

''These systems help make British Airways one of the best airlines in the world and we are confident that NIIT will deliver the quality required to enable us to retain our market leadership,'' Holder said.

Developing applications in TPF is a rare skill and expertise in this field is hard to find. Since some critical information management systems of British Airways are built in TPF, British Airways is investing in this strategic partnership by training NIIT software professionals to acquire TPF expertise in Bombay.

Vijay K Thadani, president and CEO, NIIT, said ''British Airways is one of our most valued clients. We are committed to providing British Airways a strategic advantage through offshore software development.''

Thadani said that NIIT has invested heavily in creating and deploying robust software development processes that have continuously improved the reliability of software and cycle time for software creation for global customers like British Airways, Sony, SEI Investments and Infinium.

NIIT's association with British Airways started in 1995 and since then it has worked on a number of reservation, revenue management and cargo systems for British Airways.

Reiterating NIIT's commitment to quality in software development, Thadani said NIIT's software facilities have been assessed at level three in software process capability in accordance with the capability maturity model prescribed by the software engineering institute, USA since mid-1997.

This made NIIT one among the top 80 software organisations in the world and one of the top 20 outside the US, to have got this certification.

This SEI-CMM assessment helps organisations adopting CMM achieve higher productivity and a higher probability of delivering defect-free software products, leading to better value and lower lead times for clients, he added.

NIIT has provided software solutions to several prestigious clients overseas, including SEI investments and Infinium software in the USA, Trans-Island Bus Service, Singapore's ministry of defence and Singapore Sports Council, Metro in Germany and Toshiba in Japan.
