Hewlett-Packard India, in an effort to leverage the liberalised Internet environment, has carved out a consulting division.

The division started early this month and will initially focus on the emerging Internet services market, explained Subroto Das, marketing manager, enterprise servers (enterprise accounts organisation), Hewlett-Packard.

The new facility will liaison with HCL, one of HP's major channel partners in India.

The division, it is learnt, will also focus on enterprise accounts in implementing networks. "We have the international expertise in network consulting and this division will be backed by our worldwide exposure that will translate into better enterprises for our clients," Das claimed.

The company, to tap the Internet market in the country, has also announced the launch of HP 9000, A-Class and R-Class servers.

According to Hewlett-Packard, these products were created after feedback from ISPs and offer higher Unix system performance density per rack.

"These products, along with the recently announced Intel-based NetServer systems and the Web-based secure HP TopTools remote management card, round out the company's Unix and Windows NT-based line of systems for ISPs," Das said.

The company, in another development, has scaled down its manufacturing operations in India. Hewlett-Packard has a unit at the Electronic City near Bangalore. "This is only a temporary step. As and when the market picks up, we will revert to the normal production capacity," Das said.

The Rs 6.56 billion Hewlett-Packard India, in addition to this manufacturing unit, has sales offices in major cities and operates a wholly owned software development centre that is 100 per cent export-oriented. This centre provides leading edge software solutions for the company's global customers.
