Calcutta Telephone deploys micro-tunnelling

Email this story to a friend. Breaking the ancient system of digging roads and pavements all over the city to fix a few connections, Calcutta Telephone has adopted the micro-tunnelling technique for laying underground cables.

Union Minister of State for Communication Kabindra Purakayastha inaugurated the system at a function in Calcutta last week. Mayor Prashanta Chatterjee, Calcutta Telephone Chief General Manager K R Ramanujam

and several other senior telephone and telecommunication officials were present.

Ramanujam said the new technique causes minimum damage to the environment. He pointed out that micro-tunnelling does not require the felling of trees in the path of the cables and traffic congestion due to open trenches would disappear along with the stress and noise they generate.

The technology, which was first introduced in Japan in 1975, is very economical too. That is because the extra cost involved in repairing roads does not arise.

The system will be first introduced in core areas of the city. It would then be spread out to other areas, he added.
