Email this story to a friend.

The Unilever group has set aside Rs 80 million only to address Y2K-related problems.

The company is also setting up a Web site to disseminate information regarding Y2K and developments in the field to create more awarness, an area Indians still woefully lack in, according to the David Buckle, Hindustan Lever finance director.

Buckle said major efforts were required to broaden the Y2K effort by the chambers of commerce as also a national focus.

He cited a Gartner group survey that stated that one-fourth of the 6,000 companies and government agencies surveyed had taken no steps to address the problem. But, he said, after the survey, the number of those who launched a full-fledged attack on the problem tripled from 20 per cent to 60 per cent.

Still, he said, 37 per cent of those surveyed had already experienced Y2K-related computer problems.
