NIIT to get Netcentric

Email this story to a friend.

The National Institute of Information Technology has decided to shift focus from computer education and software development to Internet- and Intranet-related applications.

Industry trends suggest such a shift could see about half of NIIT's revenues, currently standing at Rs 4 billion, coming from these areas.

Company sources said such a change in direction would incorporate a new Netcentric Solutions Business section.

Till recently, NIIT had made its name in educational software and training and software solutions. The company has often supplied Internet and Intranet-related solutions, including clients like the Singapore government, but only recently has the company decided that in the Net might lie its future.

NIIT sources said that despite the problems in Southeast Asia due to the devaluation of the rupee, this area could become a good target for NIIT's software exports. This way the company also stands to gain from the income tax benefits for software exporters.

The company has decided to target top managements in client companies in its efforts to sell its new software.

NIIT also plans to use its traditional area of strength by offering to train managers till the clients can run things themselves. E-commerce is also likely to be included in the new areas of development.
