Alcatel plans software park in Madras

The $14-billion telecommunications global major, which is setting up a base in Madras, is planning a Rs 3.5 billion software development centre there.

It was just last week that Alcatel set up a wholly-owned subsidiary, Alcatel Development Centre Chennai Private Ltd, opening an office at Guindy Industrial Estate in the city.

Rs 65 million and has been subscribed through two group companies, Alcatel Bell, MV (which has 64,350 shares of Rs 1,000 each) and Bell Industries SA (650 shares).

ADC will be engaged in application-oriented research, development and engineering of software for public digital telephone switching systems, civil telecom, with emphasis on call handling design, data, coding of software, software production, and adaptation and consultancy services.

Last August, the officials of the Belgium-based firm held discussions with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, and thereafter announced its plan to set up the software development centre. It decided to base itself in Madras following a survey it conducted, covering other locations like Bangalore Delhi, Hyderabad and Pune.

Alcatel Telecom, with a presence in over 130 countries and with a business covering the full spectrum of communications systems, has also recently set up a joint venture with Modi group for digital switching.

Alcatel has 51 per cent stake in that project which has a manufacturing unit based in Delhi and a joint venture with United Telecoms Ltd to cater to the Indian PBX market.
