TNT Express to launch Web collection facility

The company claims to have a market share of 20 per cent in India against a mere 6 per cent in 1995.

Web collection, to be launched in India shortly, is essentially a Web site facility, which requires customers to enter just the basic details of the package for the consignment to be picked up.

Web collection is the first phase in the development of Internet services, which will culminate in a complete Internet booking service, according to Sancheti.

The company has launched other services such as a 24-hour service and a special service cell to address industry-specific problems in Bombay and Delhi.

However, he declined to elaborate on the company's plans to offer logistics services.

Besides, TNT, which has a full-fledged research and development centre, TNT Information Systems at Aherston, UK, has taken regulatory steps to ensure that its services are not hampered by the millennium bug.

A special team has been set up to coordinate with regional information services teams to work on the problem. TNT's main IT system has been made year 2000 compliant.

Further, the company has been working closely with its suppliers across the globe to ensure that all their machines are Y2K compliant. All the software offered by TNT to its customers are being made Y2K compliant.

Moreover, by this year-end TNT's Internet products and interfaces will be Y2K compliant, as will all interfaces that link customers to TNT.

Also, TNT offers a Web-based track and trace facility, which is linked in real time to TNT's mainframe. TNT India, which has about 16 depots in the export centres in the country, is planning to set up seven more.

While TNT Worldwide holds a 51 per cent stake in the Indian company, the Madras-based Redington holds 49 per cent. "The focus is on the value perception of customers to which customer satisfaction is a key," Sancheti said.
