Hutchison Max to add 'microcellular ' tech

Email this story to a friend. Hutchison Max will soon install Motorola's cutting-edge technology components, called microcells, to add to network handling capacity in hotspots of Bombay.

By the end of this year, the company will install the microcells in at least 10 places in the city where concentration of cell phone users is more like the stock exchange, Nariman Point, Mantralaya, Haji Ali, and on the western

suburb like Andheri.

Since, the concentration on users is more in these places, to block the macro units currently operating is not advisable. Moreover, with the increase in number of users in future, the customers may have to face trouble in making or accepting calls, says Vice-President, Network Operations, Manoj K Pant.

How does a microcell fit in a conventional macrocellular network? The microcellular network will underlay the macrocellular network to form a multi-layer architecture.

The microcell, typically has a coverage radius of 200-300 meters and antennas are mounted below the rooftops so that surrounding buildings can be utilised to localise the coverage area of the cells.

Frequency reuse is considerably increased and both capacity and signal quality are significantly enhanced. A microcell can support a maximum of 15 simultaneous conversations.

A single M-Cell arena typically has two radio frequency carriers, which can be used to provide additional capacity and coverage to targeted hotspots such as railway stations, airports and shopping malls and busy business district.

A classical example of a very typical hotspot in Bombay is the diamond market at Panchratna Building near Opera House where mobile usage is phenomenal.

A microcell can be added to the network in order to increase capacity and coverage quality in that specific hotspot area.

Microcellular network is ideally designed for applications requiring focussed coverage within a specified area.

A single M-Cell city or M-Cell arena can solve capacity problems wherever there is a hotspot with a particularly high traffic density.

Its quick installation can provide enhanced coverage and capacity for special events or to cope with rapidly changing needs.

A good example of a typical microcellular network applicaiton is at airport or a busy railway station where the concentration of subscribers may outstretch the capacity of a macrocell serving the general area.

In such a situation the M-Cell arena can be discreetly installed at an airport terminal or railway station to provide the necessary capacity to meet peaks of demand.

The M-Cell arena solution is simple and economical to implement and helps the cellular operator to ensure service quality and maximise revenue potential.

It has been observed in numerous networks around the world that as covrerage and capacity are increased, the subscriber occupancy of the available traffic channels also increases. The reason for the increase is the fact that subscriber confidence is lifted because of the ability to orginate a call and hold a call due to improved performance of the system.
