Analog Devices India merged with parent's liaison office

An application to do so had been sent to the Foreign Investment Promotion Board and sources say that the application was cleared last week.

However, Analog Country Manager Ashok Kamath said he is not aware whether the proposal has been cleared as he has received no information from the FIPB.

ADI also plans to offer employee stock options in India. The Massachusetts based ADI's products have been sold in India since the mid-1970s. Its channel partners include BBS Electronics and Capricorn the Group.

The liaison office was started in 1990 and the software subsidiary was launched in 1996 as the software and systems technology division.

It is now known as the India Product Development Centre and is staffed by 35 employees. ADSI has invested over $5 million in the country.

A landmark achievement by the IPDC was the indigenous designing of a 32-bit digital signal processor, ADP-21065L, codenamed 'Shark', which Analogue claims is the world's highest performance 32-bit general purpose DSP today.

"Much of the software done earlier was for upgrades of existing products," Kamath explained. The DSP, priced at only $10, facilitates the development of such real-time applications as smart cruise control/collision avoidance systems in automobiles, digital audio in consumer applications and speech recognition in computers.

"Never before has the highest performance available been offered at a mass market price," said Gerald McGuire, product line manager, Analog Devices Inc said.

Ray Stata, chairman, ADI, was in Bangalore to officially inaugurate the new facility of the subsidiary.

ADI is a semiconductor company developing, manufacturing and marketing integrated circuits used in signal processing applications. The company has tie-ups with several Indian companies for which it will design and develop solutions to be incorporated in products that will be sold worldwide.
