VSNL prepares to meet newbie flood

Email this story to a friend. The Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited is preparing for 300,000 Internet subscribers that are expected to be in the market by the end of next year.

Net connections are expected to rise by nearly three times from the 120,000 at present after the government opens up Net access to 20 more cities by the end of the year. Today, VSNL services only six cities.

A senior VSNL officer has said they are adding 10,000 subscribers every month since the introduction of the new tariff slabs three months ago. Most new connections are in the 'Rs 3,000 per 100 hours' category.

The monthly growth is over 100 per cent in some pockets of the metros and VSNL would like to concentrate on improving access in these areas, the officer said.

VSNL will also soon introduce a new single-access number by setting up an exchange switch dedicated to handle Net connections in Delhi. This would be extended to other metros too.

The measure may slightly improve Net access. The officer said VSNL is likely to set up its own exchange server to provide rapid connectivity with other servers.

The external connectivity pipeline would be expanded. The officer said while the Internet business of VSNL is small compared to its traditional international telephony business, it is growing at a very fast rate, forcing the company to concentrate on expanding and improving services.
