HP India may hit Rs 6.61 billion turnover

Email this story to a friend.

Despite the Southeast Asian currency crisis, Hewlett Packard India may achieve a turnover of Rs 6.61 billion by the end of the financial year.

HP India is a 100 per cent subsidiary of the US based Hewlett Packard company.

A senior company executive has said that "Our revenue turnover for

1996-97 was Rs 5.29 billion and in spite of the market not coming up to our expectations, our aim is to grow by at least 25 per cent by the end of March this year."

It is expected that the Computer Products Division, comprising the RISC architecture UNIX systems, the Intel based PCs and Netservers and printers and peripherals, will contribute about 30 per cent towards the bottom line.

HP's Vice-President of the Enterprise Systems Group Stacy Plemmons, who was in Bombay recently, said that of the rest, almost 60 per cent would accrue from the sale of medical products, primarily in the intensive care for heart surgeries unit.

Interestingly, Hewlett Packard in the US calculates its balance sheets and financial analysis based on the period from November 1 to October 31 of the following year, unlike the way it is done here in HP India from April 1 to March 31 of the following year.

Meanwhile, in a related move, HP is currently conducting its EPIC (explicitly parallel instruction computing) technology Asia Pacific tour in India which is being held in the seven cities of New Delhi, Calcutta, Pune, Bombay, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Madras.

EPIC is expected to advance processor technology by overcoming the limitations of the prevailing RISC and CISC architectures because of its related stress on parallelism.

Senior HP executives claimed that the first 64 bit instructions set architecture microprocessor based on the EPIC technology, code named Merced, would go online for production by Intel (Partner of HP in this development) by the end of 1999.

With HP recently unveiling its software and solutions group to provide online service to customers through its New Delhi response centre, it now remains to be seen whether the company can stick to its commitment of 25 per cent growth under such trying economic conditions.
