Sun to set up 100 per cent subsidiary in India

Email this story to a friend. Sun Microsystems has sought the Foreign Investment Promotion Board's permission for converting its liaison office in India into a 100 per cent subsidiary.

The proposed subsidiary, to be headquartered outside Bangalore, will house a technology and marketing centre to provide support services for Sun's customers in India and neighbouring countries.

In addition, the subsidiary is also expected to look after the marketing and distribution of Sun's hardware and software products in India.

A Sun spokesman has confirmed that the company has submitted its application to the FIPB for setting up a 100 per cent subsidiary.

He, however, refused to divulge further details of the subsidiary's proposed activities.

At present, Sun sells its range of hardware and software solutions in the country through distributors, which includes Bangalore-based Wipro Infotech, Bombay-based Fujitsu ICIM and Tata Infotech.

The setting up of a support centre in India is expected to help the company support its customers directly.

A leading manufacturer of mid-range and high-end servers based on the UNIX operating system, Sun is one of the major players in the enterprise server market and competes with companies like IBM and Hewlett Packard. The company is also a major player in the workstation market in the country.

According to analysts, the setting up of a Sun technology centre in India will also give a boost to the development of software based on Java in India.

Unveiled by Sun some couple of years ago, Java is a programming language, which can be used to write software that works on almost all popular operating systems.
