Managing Director Daniel Yeong has said.

Apart from assembling 40,000 PCs for the domestic market, he said, the company would be assembling another 40,000 PCs for a leading international PC vendor's Indian requirements on a build to order basis.

This is a new concept that is picking up in the country where PCs are manufactured on orders placed. "This is done to meet the company's economics," said Yeong. He was reluctant, however, to reveal the vendor's name.

Yeong said its $4 million Daman unit is equipped with surface-mount technology and can assemble 100,000 boxes every year.

As 64 per cent of the sales of GES Technology is generated from the South Asian market, its growth has been significantly affected by the Asian currency crisis.

"If there was no crisis in Asia then the current 64 per cent would have seen another 30 per cent growth this year. However, with the crisis, the growth of this market has reduced by 7-8 per cent. So we are expatriating manufacturing plants in India and China," Yeong said, adding the company expects to have a 5 per cent share of the domestic PC market in the first year.

The Asian currency crisis has lowered the prices of commodities exported from the South Asian countries. PCs are no different. The Datamini PCs are priced higher than the locally assembled boxes but lower than the price tag of genuine Intel dealers.

The entry level unbranded PCs with Pentium 166 MHz and the MMX technology is available for Rs 43,000-45,000, the Datamini PCs with the same configuration is tagged at Rs 35,000.
