cent. The number three position is held by Zenith that is reported to have 15.1 per cent of the market.

An HCL statement credits the increase in its share to channel strategy, focused development of specialised opportunities for the home user and its several initiatives, notably the 81-city roadshow dubbed the Grand Computer Carnival.

The Carnival, the statement claims, helped the company to win over the home segment as it introduced families to the advantages of computing.

HCL Infosystems credits its distribution arm, the Frontline Division, with providing a comprehensive and judiciously priced range of computing options and specialised support services.

CEO A Mohan Rao claims that "HCL has been a pioneer in providing computing solutions according to the needs of the PC users across segments. Assured support and innovative value added services to PC users has enabled us to garner the largest share of the home market."

Of the 106,000 units sold in 1997-98, IDC India Directions 99 has reported the share of the branded segment at over 22 per cent.
