Bharti Telecom sales up

The figures are impressive. Bharti Telecom, already a name to reckon with in telephone manufacturing in India, has increased sales by 59 per cent increase in 1997-98 compared to its performance during the last fiscal year.

The company sold 1.95 million telephones as against 1.23 million in the last fiscal year. Of these 1.43 million telephones were bought by the Department of Telecommunications and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited. These

two departments require about four million telephones a year.

Currently, Bharti Telecom has cornered about 25 per cent of the market share. Its phones are sold under the brand names BEETEL and Siemens (a product of its joint venture with Siemens Telecom Ltd.)

The company is expanding, already having increased its installed capacity during the current year to three million telephones to meet the anticipated demand from the DoT and private operators. This capacity is expected to go up to five million by 2000. Bharti hopes to increase sales by 15 per cent over the current year's production.

Bharti has also been aggressively cutting prices, quoting Rs 369.98 as the price of a telephone for the latest DoT tender. This is far below the price last year -- Rs 425 -- and is expected to give Bharti a larger share in the cake
