VSNL calls for partners in ICO Global project

Global Mobile Personal Communications services - in India.

The joint venture will be a strategic partnership with one or more domestic telecommunications services companies, VSNL has said in a release.

VSNL is the exclusive franchise holder for ICO services in India and a non-exclusive franchise holder in Nepal, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Mauritius and the Maldives.

VSNL is also building and will operate and maintain one of ICO's 12 worldwide Satellite Access Nodes - earth stations.

ICO Global Communications was established in January 1995 to provide satellite-based Global Mobile Personal Communications services. It is funded by over 59 international telecom organisations from 51 countries.

The system is likely to begin initial commercial service in March 2000.
