NASSCOM suggests new IT policy

The National Association of Software and Service Companies has proposed a plan for the effective use of IT in India.

The plan targets the issues of increasing software exports through proper legislation and the setting up of software parks in every state, by generating jobs and by educating people over networks. NASSCOM Executive Director Dewang Mehta said the plan also suggested that Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd offer fast connectivity.

The association called for removal of duty on all software imports other than some embedded software. It also called for the removal of customs bonding for export-oriented units and that special incentives be provided to software exporters, including lower rates for 64 kbps connectivity.

NASSCOM has also called for an institute at Hyderabad like the Indian Institute of Information Technology and the provision of Internet connections in every school and college within five years.

And for those who are seeking jobs, it wants to generate one million jobs in five years, with the provision of Internet connections at all STD/ISD booths. This way Internet access will become a ubiquitous phenomenon, according to Mehta.

The plan also calls for changes in the broadcast bill without which cable TV operators will not be able to provide Internet connections.
