Expelled DMK leader M K Azhagiri today led a rally of his supporters in a show of strength to the mausoleum of his late father and DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi at the Marina beach in Chennai.

At the samadhi, all that Azhagiri said was, "I have come here to pay respects to my father."

Dressed in black, to condole Karunanidhi's death, Azhagiri began his rally from nearby Triplicane. After walking for a while, he hopped on to an open van, waving enthusiastically to cheer his cadres.

The expelled leader's followers from various districts held banners, which read 'karam korpom, kazhagam kappom,' (let us join hands and guard the party).

The former Union minister's loyalists, including Madurai-based P M Mannan, took part in the rally.

Azhagiri said some days ago that he was ready to accept the leadership of his estranged brother M K Stalin if he was admitted into the party. He was expelled from the DMK in 2014.

Today, when it was pointed out to him that the Velachery east secretary of the DMK had been sacked for welcoming him at Chennai airport, Azhagiri asked, "One and a half lakh supporters came here today, will they sack all of them?"
