Mohanlal may be pitted against Tharoor if he joins BJP

Speculations are rife that Malayalam superstar Mohanlal may join the BJP ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Mohanlal met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Janmashtami, yesterday, in New Delhi.


The PM was seemingly bowled over by Mohanlan and tweeted, " "Yesterday, I had a wonderful meeting with @Mohanlal Ji. His humility is endearing. His wide range of social service initiatives are commendable and extremely inspiring."


A report today, says that the the RSS is keen Mohanlal contests the Lok Sabha elections next year from Thiruvananthapuram, which, is incumbent Congress MP Shashi Tharoor's constituency.


Mohanlal is perhaps the greatest crowd puller in the Malayalam movie industry and Modi is one of the most followed leaders on Twitter around the globe. The meeting has naturally thrilled their fans.  Mohanlal met Modi to invite him for a programme at the actor's enterprise Viswasanthi Foundation

BJP has made almost no forays in the flood-hit state with the only exception being former union minister O Rajagopal.

The BJP has another Malayalam actor Suresh Gopi in its ranks and if Mohanlal does indeed join the party, it will provide the necessary star power for the party.


In 2016, Mohanlal added grist to the rumour mill about his closeness to the BJP after he supported PM Modi's demonetisation move and justified temporary hardships of the common man for a good cause to end corruption. However, his comments were derided by several Kerala politicians.


After his meeting with Modi on Monday, Mohanlal said the PM had assured all possible assistance for Kerala, which is picking up the pieces from the devastating floods that killed nearly 300 people and displaced thousands of others.

The national award-winning actor said the PM expressed his desire to participate in the Global Malayalee roundtable to chalk out the roadmap for a "New Kerala".
