Music maestro Ilayaraja has set off a storm in Tamil film industry by putting out a video message that singers and orchestras performing his songs need to pay him a royalty, since they were getting paid for their performance.

'I would like to inform all singers and musicians that they need to get my prior sanction for singing my songs, otherwise it is an offence under the copyright law.

'If they don't conform to this I will take action as per law against them.

'I would like to clarify that I am not putting obstacles in your singing.

'The royalty is on the fee you are charging, not for the song. If you choose to sing for free there is no royalty to be paid. When you sing for money, how can I not get a share when the song is mine?' he has asked in the video.
