So, BJP is on its way to form government in the 22nd state with a clear win in Karnataka. Leads right now are: BJP: 114, Congress: 66, JDS: 40. The magic figure is 112 for a 224 seat assembly.

The BJP is not ruling in seven states out of 29: Kerala (CPI-M), Tamil Nadu (AIADMK), Puducherry (Congress), West Bengal (Trinamool Congress), Odisha (BJD), Mizoram (Congress), Punjab (Congress).

This is the first time in the history of India that one single party has helmed the political mandate of the people in so many states.

The Congress at its peak held sway over 18 states in 1994.

Narendra Modi's electoral promise of a Congress-mukt Bharat is more than a possibility with back-to-back wins since its spectacular victory in 2014.

To his credit, Congress president Rahul Gandhi led a strong campaign in Karnataka backed by chief minister Siddaramaiah, but the PM and Amit Shah's blitzkrieg won the day for the BJP.

This was also the first time that Sonia Gandhi joined the campaign trail in two years.
