Coimbatore likely to metro rail

The Union Cabinet is likely to discuss the Coimbatore Metro Rail project in early July, according to a highly-placed government source.

The project which is likely to be completed in four years will commence in 2019. This will be the second big infrastructure project in Tamil Nadu after the Chennai Metro.

Once the Union Cabinet approves the project, the state government and the Metro Rail Company can seek foreign investment.

It has been the late Tamil Nadu CM J Jayalalithaa's pet project which is why incumbent E Palaniswamy government is keen to implement it. The foundation stone is likely to be laid by September 15, the birthday of DMK founder C N Annadurai. The AIADMK government is keen to invite Prime Minister Narendra Modi to lay foundation stone.
