Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi is returning to New Delhi on July 2, Sunday, after spending 20 days in Europe.

Rahul was absent at a time crucial issues like the Presidential poll, the Prime Minister's US visit happened and as Kashmir simmered in the wake of the lynching of a policeman.

It is Sonia Gandhi who coordinated with the 17 Opposition parties to decide on an Opposition candidate for the presidential polls, which as you may be aware is former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar.

Insiders in the CPI-M openly admit that it is easier for the Left to do business with Sonia Gandhi, since Rahul can be extremely unpredictable.

A source said the Left was flabbergasted when diverting from the agenda, Rahul suddenly spoke about the Bhagwad Gita and the Upanishads.

Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav also finds it easier to approach Sonia Gandhi and it would be fair to say that it reflects the sentiments of most parties.

Apart from political parties, the Special Protection Group that is tasked to provide security to Rahul Gandhi, can't seem to get a handle on him.

The SPG has to be given a copy of Rahul Gandhi's itinerary ahead of his visit to any place, whether in the country or abroad.

They will then convey the itinerary to security heads of the countries Rahul is visiting, or to take Indian Missions abroad into confidence.

SPG sources say that during this trip to Italy, where Rahul spent time with his grandmother, the SPG's information on Rahul's itinerary ended in London. After that it was all conjecture.

The SPG will be hauled over the coals if there is any security threat to the Congress VP during his visit to Europe, but they are hardly privy to information on Rahul's whereabouts.

The SPG was created after an act of Parliament to protect Prime Ministers and former Prime Ministers and their families.

Young Turks like Sachin Pilot or Jyotiraditya Scindia often accompany Rahul when he travels abroad and the chosen one is decided much ahead of the visit. Party sources say that Rahul discusses future political moves with these young Turks, which is highly confidential.

As a senior Congress leader quipped, it was unfortunate that Right to Information is not available in the Congress.
