23:33   34 injured after subway train derails in New York
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority says an investigation is under way after a train derailed as it came into the 125th Street station Tuesday morning, injuring more than two dozen riders.

Subway riders on social media say they were evacuated from the southbound train after it came to a grinding halt.

Newly appointed MTA chair Joe Lhota says the train's emergency brakes engaged at some point, causing two of the cars to derail and scrape against the station's wall.

It's unclear what caused the brakes to engage.

Lhota says the smoke conditions reported by riders was the result of sparks and garbage on the tracks.

All riders who were stuck on trains due to the incident have been evacuated.

"We were going between 135th, 125th downtown. Normal pace, then all of a sudden it nwas like a bucking horse, we were going up and down, all up the sides. People were flying all over the cars," said one rider.

"People were panicking, jumping out of their seats, just crying and praying out loud. and it was just very traumatizing," added another passenger on the train.

"Being in that situation where I felt like you could die, and then seeing everybody step up and try to get through," noted a third passenger.

The city fire department says roughly 34 passengers were being treated for non life-threatening injuries.

20:42   UK says 95 buildings fail safety checks after London Tower block fire
Prime Minister Theresa May said on Tuesday Britain must hold a national investigation into exterior cladding used on high-rise buildings after all those checked after the deadly London tower block blaze this month failed safety tests.

At least 79 people died when a fire that started in a fridge freezer engulfed the 24-storey Grenfell Tower block on June 14, trapping many inside their apartments as they slept.

Police on Tuesday named a five-year-old boy as the youngest of the dead so far formally identified.

The devastating inferno has raised concerns about the cladding used on the facades of buildings, mainly for insulation or to improve their appearance, prompting urgent safety tests to be carried out on similar tower blocks around the country.

"Right now, we are at a position where 95 buildings in 32 local authority areas have now failed the tests and that remains a 100 percent failure rate," May's spokesman told reporters.

"The prime minister said there would need to be a major national investigation into what had gone wrong when cladding which is failing the tests had been fitted on buildings across the country over a number of decades."

The reaction came after News18 reported that Kumar is readying to snap ties with Lalu Prasad Yadav.

Any attempt by India to become US ally to counter China will not be in its interests and could even lead to "catastrophic results", a state-run Chinese daily said as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump held their maiden meeting.

"Washington and New Delhi share anxieties about China's rise. In recent years, to ratchet up geopolitical pressure on China, the US has cozied up to India," an article in the Global Times said.

Underlining that India is not a US ally like Japan or Australia, it said, "To assume a role as an outpost country in the US' strategy to contain China is not in line with India's interests. It could even lead to catastrophic results."

The daily said if India regresses from its non-alignment stance and becomes a "pawn" for the US in countering China, it will be caught up in a strategic dilemma and new geopolitical frictions will be triggered in South Asia.

16:46   EU slaps Google with record $2.7 billion fine
European Union regulators slapped Google with a record 2.4 billion (Rs 17,423 crore) antitrust fine on Tuesday.

The European Commission found that the US tech giant denied "consumers a genuine choice" by using its search engine to unfairly steer them to its own shopping platform.

Regulators said that Google must change its behavior within 90 days or face additional penalties.

"What Google has done is illegal under EU antitrust rules," said Margrethe Vestager, the bloc's top antitrust official. "It denied other companies the chance to compete on the merits and to innovate. And most importantly, it denied European consumers a genuine choice of services and the full benefits of innovation."

Google said in a statement that it tries to show ads in ways that are helpful for buyers and sellers. "We respectfully disagree with the conclusions announced today," a Google spokesperson said. "We will review the Commission's decision in detail as we consider an appeal, and we look forward to continuing to make our case."

16:19   Did TN CM forget his own signature?
Did Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edapaddi Palaniswami forgot his signature?

There was a spot of drama late last night when Palaniswami signed as a proposer for the candidature of Ram Nath Kovind as the BJP's presidential candidate.

Before his signed on the dotted line, Palaniswami asked to see his signature as it appears in the Election Commission website and only then, did he sign.

Did he forget his own signature?

Not quite. Ram Nath Kovind's election campaign has specific instructions for those who are proposing and seconding the nomination papers -- check your own signature.

If there is a slight change in the signature, the nomination will be rejected, the Returning Officer told Palaniswami. In fact, Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu, Telangana CM K Chandrasekhar Rao were specifically told by Venkaiah Naidu that there should not be even the slightest difference in their signatures.

The signature of each proposer and the person who seconded the nomination is being cross checked at every step. BJP coordinators of Ram Nath Kovind have insisted that regional parties seriously adhere to the instructions from Election Commission.

So, Palaniswami delayed affixing his signature as it took over 30 minutes to download his own affidavit from the website, filed during his election as MLA in Tamil Nadu. The affidavit was downloaded from the Election
Commission website.

15:44   Gulberg massacre: VHP leader gets bail
The Gujarat High Court on Tuesday granted bail to convicted Vishva Hindu Parishad leader Atul Vaidya in connection with the Gulberg Society massacre case.

Earlier in the week, a special court had sentenced 11 convicts to life imprisonment, 12 to seven years and another to 10 years in jail in connection with the case in which 69 people were killed.

The special investigation court on June 2 found 24 people guilty, 11 of them of murder in the 14-year-old case. The trial began in 2009.

Zakia Jafri, the wife of former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri, expressed her disappointment over the verdict in this matter and hinted that she might approach the higher courts.

"After so many people died, that's all the court could decide? Just 12 guilty? I will have to fight this," Jafri told ANI.

Social activist Teesta Setalvad, who has been fighting for justice for the victims, welcomed the verdict but expressed disappointment with the "lesser sentence".

15:09   Prez candidate Meira Kumar says casteism bug should be buried
Opposition presidential candidate Meira Kumar on Tuesday categorically stated that there should not be one upmanship on caste for the post of President.

14:48   Rahul returns to India on Sunday
Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi is returning to New Delhi on July 2, Sunday, after spending 20 days in Europe.

Rahul was absent at a time crucial issues like the Presidential poll, the Prime Minister's US visit happened and as Kashmir simmered in the wake of the lynching of a policeman.

It is Sonia Gandhi who coordinated with the 17 Opposition parties to decide on an Opposition candidate for the presidential polls, which as you may be aware is former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar.

Insiders in the CPI-M openly admit that it is easier for the Left to do business with Sonia Gandhi, since Rahul can be extremely unpredictable.

A source said the Left was flabbergasted when diverting from the agenda, Rahul suddenly spoke about the Bhagwad Gita and the Upanishads.

Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav also finds it easier to approach Sonia Gandhi and it would be fair to say that it reflects the sentiments of most parties.

Apart from political parties, the Special Protection Group that is tasked to provide security to Rahul Gandhi, can't seem to get a handle on him.

The SPG has to be given a copy of Rahul Gandhi's itinerary ahead of his visit to any place, whether in the country or abroad.

They will then convey the itinerary to security heads of the countries Rahul is visiting, or to take Indian Missions abroad into confidence.

SPG sources say that during this trip to Italy, where Rahul spent time with his grandmother, the SPG's information on Rahul's itinerary ended in London. After that it was all conjecture.

The SPG will be hauled over the coals if there is any security threat to the Congress VP during his visit to Europe, but they are hardly privy to information on Rahul's whereabouts.

The SPG was created after an act of Parliament to protect Prime Ministers and former Prime Ministers and their families.

Young Turks like Sachin Pilot or Jyotiraditya Scindia often accompany Rahul when he travels abroad and the chosen one is decided much ahead of the visit. Party sources say that Rahul discusses future political moves with these young Turks, which is highly confidential.

As a senior Congress leader quipped, it was unfortunate that Right to Information is not available in the Congress.

14:08   Any time you like, we want you back: Trump warms up to Modi
A guided White House tour by President Donald Trump, a few laughs and a working dinner -- the first for a foreign dignitary at the White House under the current administration -- was how Prime Minister Narendra Modi rounded off his US visit.

"Well, Mr President (Donald Trump), let me express my gratitude for this invitation that was extended to me. It is true that I have spent a very short time over here, but really, I have felt so much at home during this stay in the United States," Modi told the President at the dinner that was hosted in his honour by Trump.

The US president was joined by First Lady Melania Trump, and Vice President Mike Pence for the dinner. Trump had his top Cabinet members at the dinner, including Defence Secretary James Mattis, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and National Security Advisor Lt Gen H R McMaster.

Trump's Chief of Staff Reince Priebus, along with his senior advisor Jarred Kushner, were also present at the dinner table which had 13 chairs on each side.

The guest arrived in the Blue Room of the White House after a cocktail reception which was hosted by the First Lady. "I am indeed also very grateful to the First Lady. She has organised this reception in my honour, and this honours not just me, but 1.25 billion people of India. So, once again, let me thank you and express my gratitude," Modi said.

Amidst laughter, Trump told Modi that he will do the toast as soon as the media leaves. "We're going to have a very special toast, a very intimate toast," Trump said. "But again, I want to thank you and all of your representatives. It is such an honour to have you at the White House and in Washington. And we have had tremendous meetings today, tremendous success, and we enjoy a wonderful relationship, but it's never been better than it is today," he said. "And again, any time you'd like, we want to have you back as soon as possible," Trump said, indicating that he would like to have Modi at his house pretty soon.

The two leaders developed an instant chemistry so much so that Trump gave Modi a tour of his residence. Trump gave the Prime Minister a guided tour of President's residence quarters in White House including the Lincoln bedroom and showed him a copy of Lincoln's famous Gettysburg address and the desk on which he wrote it.

Reflecting a new bonhomie between the two leaders, officials of the two countries were seen chatting while they were waiting for Trump and Modi to arrive in the Blue Room of the White House. Indian Ambassador to the US Navtej Sarna was seen chatting with Priebus for several minutes and exchanging notes.

Wearing an Emilio Pucci yellow floral dress in crepe, the First Lady joined Trump in welcoming Modi at the South Portico of the White House and then walk with them to the Oval Office.

As Modi was about to depart from the South Portico later in the night after the dinner, he was seen chatting with Melania for more than a minute, apparently thanking her for their great hospitality.

According to the office of the First Lady, she oversaw the planning and menu. At the Rose Garden, Modi acknowledged their hospitality.

"Right from the opening tweet to the end of their talks, President Trump's welcome, which was filled with friendliness, his warm welcome to the White House by himself and the first lady -- I would like to thank both of you from the bottom of my heart for this warm welcome," said the Prime Minister.

13:51   Dear John, I'm trying to have a baby: Serena's McEnroe takedown
23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams has hit back at John McEnroe, saying the tennis legend should respect her and her privacy and should abstain from making comments that are "not factually based".

McEnroe had claimed that Serena, who is the best player of her gender, would be ranked 700 if she plays on the men's circuit. The seven-time major champion, speaking as part of a tour to promote his new book 'But Seriously', said that while he has great respect for Serena, he would place the 23-time Grand Slam winner "like 700 in the world" on the men's circuit.

"Best female player ever - no question. If she had to just play the circuit - the men's circuit - that would be an entirely different story," he added.

However, Williams on Monday hit back at McEnroe and wrote on Twitter, "Dear John, I adore and respect you but please please keep me out of your statements that are not factually based.

"I've never played anyone ranked 'there' nor do I have time. Respect me and my privacy as I'm trying to have a baby. Good day sir," she added.

McEnroe had also asserted that Williams' mental toughness would be one of the things that she would be having her way on the men's tour.

"The reality of what would happen on a given day is Serena could beat some players, I believe, because she is so incredibly strong mentally," he said.

"She could overcome some situations where players would choke because she's been in it so many times, so many situations at Wimbledon, The US Open, etc," he added.

In April, Williams announced that she was pregnant and would not compete for the remainder of the season.

13:33   China shuts down access to Nathu La pass over border standoff
China has accused Indian troops of "crossing the boundary" in the Sikkim section and demanded their immediate withdrawal while asserting that it has shut down the Nathu La pass entry for Indian pilgrims traveling to Kailash Mansarovar because of the border standoff.

China also said that it had put off the visit of Indian pilgrims who enter Tibet via the Nathu La pass "for safety reasons" in view of the border issue."

China urges India to immediately withdraw its border guards that have crossed the boundary and have a thorough investigation of this matter," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said.

"The Indian border guards crossed the boundary in the Sikkim section of the China-India border and entered the territory of China, and obstructed normal activities of Chinese frontier forces in the Donglang area recently, and the Chinese side has taken counter-measures," he said in a statement last night.

His statement came after the Chinese Defence Ministry accused the Indian troops of objecting to building a road in what it claimed to be Chinese territory.

The dispute over the constructing of the road was apparently the reason why China stopped a batch of 47 Indian pilgrims from crossing through Nathu La border in Sikkim into Tibet to visit Kailash and Mansarovar.

13:32   Racist Delhi club asks woman to leave because she 'looked like a maid'
The Delhi Golf Club has issued a statement saying it apologises to the member who had brought the guest, dressed in a traditional Khasi costume. "This has been unconditionally accepted. The iIncident could have been handled in a better way by staff, the guests were not asked to leave," the Delhi Golf Club said in a statement.

Point to note is that the club did not apologise to the woman, but a member of the club.

To bring you up to speed, an elderly woman from Meghalaya, Tailin Lyngdoh, was allegedly asked to leave the Delhi Golf Club on Sunday, as she was wearing a traditional Khasi dress. The  club said resembled a maid.

Speaking to ANI, Lyngdoh said, "They told me to leave the dining hall as maids were not allowed. They were very rude. I felt ashamed and angry. I was wearing a traditional Khasi dress called Jainsem, they told me this dress was not allowed. They also told me that I look like a Nepali. I have been too many other countries, but this has never happened to me. Surprised to know that this has happened here in Delhi!"

Lyngdoh is a Governess to Health Advisor in Assam Government, Dr Nivedita Barthakur who was also invited for lunch at the Delhi Golf Club by a member.

Barthakur stated that even after she explained to them Lyngdoh is from Meghalaya and is wearing her traditional dress called- Jainsem, they still objected to it.

"This incident happened on June 25 Sunday; nine members were invited for lunch, including my governess by a long standing member of the Delhi Golf Club. Lyngdoh was also invited in her own right. When we reached there and sat at the table for about 10 to 15 minutes, this gentleman, who is a manager I believe, and a lady walked over to Lyngdoh and told her to leave the table. When Lyngdoh objected and asked why -- the manager said because you look like a 'maid'.

When we all interjected and asked them the reason, they repeatedly said because she looks like one and her attire too speaks of it. I explained to them that she is from Meghalaya and is wearing her traditional attire called- Jainsem, they still objected on it. We all were shocked, sad and had to leave the place," Barthakur told ANI.

Barthakur further added that Lyngdoh has travelled to London and UAE earlier wearing the Jainsem, but never faced any trouble there. People in London and Abu Dhabi appreciated the jainsem. But in India, she was told to leave Delhi Golf Club as they didn't know our culture or tradition.

Barthakur posted the incident on Facebook.

12:42   Aadhar a must for social benefits: SC
In other news: The Supreme Court today refused to pass any interim order against the Centre's notification making Aadhaar mandatory for availing benefits of various social welfare schemes.

A vacation bench of Justices A M Khanwilkar and Navin Sinha said that no interim order can be passed at this stage on the "mere apprehension" of petitioners that government may deprive people from availing benefits of various social welfare schemes due to lack of Aadhaar.

The bench referred to the June 9 judgement passed by the apex court in which it had upheld the validity of an Income Tax Act provision making Aadhaar mandatory for allotment of PAN cards and filing of tax returns, but had put a partial stay on its implementation till a Constitution bench addressed the issue of right to privacy.

The bench said, "In view of the observations made in the judgement in Para 90 of the case... decided on June 9, no further observation is required." During the hearing, Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the bench that the Centre has extended the June 30 deadline to September 30 for those who do not have Aadhaar and are availing the benefits of various social welfare schemes.

Senior advocate Shyam Divan, appearing for petitioners, told the court that the Centre should be directed not to deprive any person of the benefits of social welfare schemes which he/she is enjoying now due to lack of Aadhaar.

"No interim order can be passed in mandamus on mere apprehensions. You have to wait for one week. If somebody is deprived (of the benefits) you can point out the same to this court," the bench told Divan and posted the matter for further hearing on July 7.

The apex court was hearing three separate petitions challenging government's notification making Aadhaar mandatory for availing benefits of various social welfare schemes.

12:08   Hizb chief Salahuddin's movement, funding will be affected: India
Welcoming the United States move to declare Hizb-ul-Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin a global terrorist, Union Home Secretary Rajeev Mehrishi on Tuesday said the move would affect the former's funding and movement.

"The United States' stance is correct. He (Salahuddin) is a terrorist, and therefore, he has been declared so. Post declaration, we can expect some impact on his movement and funding. That might help. Otherwise, he is a coward and has fled to Pakistan," Mehrishi told ANI.

Washington yesterday designated Hizbul chief Mohammad Yusuf Shah, also known as Syed Salahuddin, as a 'Specially Designated Global Terrorist.'Commenting on the development, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Gopal Baglay said in a statement, "In that sense, we would welcome this notification and also underline strongly that both India and US face a threat of terrorism and are working together to counter this threat.

"He added that this move by the US vindicates India's long standing position that cross-border terrorism from Pakistan has been behind the disturbances created in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.Salahuddin is the senior leader of the militant group Hizb-ul-Mujahideen.

In September 2016, Salahuddin vowed to block any peaceful resolution to the Kashmir conflict, threatened to train more Kashmiri suicide bombers, and vowed to turn the Kashmir Valley "into a graveyard for Indian forces."

Under Salahuddin's tenure, the Hizbul-Mujahideen has claimed responsibility for several attacks, including the April 2014 explosives attack in Jammu and Kashmir, which injured 17 people.

11:45   Modi-Trump do NOT discuss H-1B visa
More on the H-1B visa issue:

The H-1B visa issue -- the elephant in the room -- in the Indo-US relationship in the run up to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's maiden meeting with President Donald Trump -- did not figure in the talks between the two leaders.

With the Trump administration undertaking a review of the H-1B visa, the most sought-after by Indian IT professionals, the issue had taken centrestage ahead of Modi's US visit with the issue expected to figure prominently in bilateral discussions.

However, the H-1B issue specifically did not figure in the talks with Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar telling reporters that there was a lot of discussion with business leaders and the two leaders about the digital partnership when asked about whether H-1B visa issue figured in the talks.

"There is recognition that the Indian-American community has played an extraordinary role in building this relationship. When you value something it is obvious that you will take care of what you value," Jaishankar said.

There was also no mention of the H-1B visa issue in the Indo-US joint statement issued after the two leaders met. The White House, in a fact sheet, said Indian-Americans have embraced innovation and entrepreneurship, sitting at the forefront of Silicon Valley's technology revolution, and founding an estimated 15 per cent of Silicon Valley startups.

"They have helped to develop the Pentium chip, fiber optics, and noise cancelling headphones, among numerous other innovations," it said. Today, nearly four million Indian-Americans reside in the United States and over 700,000 US citizens live in India.

11:37   H-1B: US values Indian-Americans, you take care of what you value
And on the transactional front, this is what happened during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's US visit. The PM and US President Donald Trump today agreed to strengthen the Indo-US economic partnership. Takeways...

--  From next year Liquefied Natural Gas from the US will start flowing to India. Indo-US LNG trade will be in excess of USD 40 billion.

-- H-1B visa: Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar: There was a lot of discussion with business leaders and the two leaders about the digital partnership. There is recognition that the Indian-American community has played an extraordinary role in building this relationship. When you value something, it is obvious that you will take care of what you value.

-- The two leaders committed to further expanding and balancing the trade relationship and to removing obstacles to growth and jobs creation. The two leaders also resolved to pursue increased commercial engagement in a manner that advances the principles of free and fair trade.

-- The United States and India plan to undertake a comprehensive review of trade relations.

-- Increasing market access in agriculture, information technology, and manufactured goods and services.

-- A two-way trade in goods and services reached USD 114 billion in 2016. With the Indian economy growing at seven per cent annually, both countries are committed to further expanding and balancing the trade relationship.

-- Trump said he looks forward to working with Modi to create jobs in the two countries, to grow their economies and to create a trading relationship that is fair and reciprocal.

-- "It is important that barriers be removed to the export of US goods into your markets, and that we reduce our trade deficit with your country. I was pleased to learn about an Indian Airlines recent order of 100 new American planes, one of the largest order of it is kind, which will support thousands and thousands of American jobs," Trump said. "We're also looking forward to exporting more American energy to India as your economy grows, including major long- term contracts to purchase American natural gas, which are right now being negotiated, and we will sign them.

-- Trump: India has the fastest growing economy in the world. We hope we're going to be catching you very soon in terms of percentage increase, I have to tell you that. We're working on it.

-- Trump on GST: In just two weeks, you will begin to implement the largest tax overhaul in your country's history. We're doing that also, by the way. Creating great new opportunities for your citizens. You have a big vision for improving infrastructure, and you are fighting government corruption, which is always a grave threat to democracy.

PM Modi: "I am sure that the convergence between my vision for a 'new India' and President Trump's vision for 'Making America Great Again' will add new dimensions to our cooperation. I am very clear about the fact that India's interests lie in a strong, and prosperous, and successful America. In the same way, India's development and its growing role at the international level are in the USA's interest."

11:05   Melania's sunny floral dress perfect contrast to Modi-Trump terror talk
Looks like the First Lady of the United States never fails to leave the fashion police speechless.

Melania Trump, who generally sticks to a uniform of sheath dresses, fit and flare frocks and classic evening-wear, chose to don a floral dress to meet and greet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with US President Donald Trump.

According to Vogue, the bright yellow floral-print floor-skimming crepe gown by Emilio Pucci featured a few key components of Trump's established style.

The contrast-belt at the waist provided a nod to Trump's military-inspired wardrobe and defined the silhouette. Add to the effortlessly stunning look was her pink suede stilettos and the diamond ring.

The former Slovenian model was all smiles while welcoming PM Modi to the White House.

09:51   Polls delayed Modi's visit, says Trump; PM calls UP win 'icing on cake'
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to visit the White House earlier this year but his trip was delayed because of state elections, US President Donald Trump said today.

Trump was speaking at the formal dinner with Modi at the historic Blue Room of the White House. "You know, the prime minister was going to come here at a different time, but we worked out this time because they had elections in a section of India. "And it's just a small section," he said, apparently referring to Uttar Pradesh -- one of India's most populous states.

"But we said, it's the seventh largest country in the world, that small section of India. So I said, you know what, this is a better day. But it is great to have you," he said. Replying to him, Modi said the "icing on the cake" was that in those elections, "our party won".

"And after many years, we've got three-fourth majority in the state assembly," Modi added. The Bharatiya Janata Party had won the assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh by a landslide, securing over 300 of the total of 403 seats. "You won by a lot," Trump said, lauding it as a "fantastic" victory.

Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar, when asked about the "delay", said the dates of the visit were never formal. "As you know, the Prime Minister was too busy with the elections. It was a question of planning the trip between our friends and timed with a common calendar. It happened on June 26. If it was convenient, it could have happened a week before or a week later. I think it was nothing other than convenience," he said.

Among the guests present at the dinner were First Lady Melania Trump, Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, Defense Secretary James Mattis, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross Energy Secretary Rick Perry and National Security Adviser McMaster. On the Indian side were Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and Indian Ambassador to the US Navtej Sarna.

08:55   PM's bear hugs trump handshakes in the White House
There is perhaps only one leader whose physical greetings are talked more about than the "clasp and yank" handshake of Donald Trump, writes the Telegraph, UK.

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi left Prince William's hand white after taking it in a vice-like grip last year and has become well-known for his vigorous hugs of other world leaders.

When they met at the White House on Monday, therefore, all eyes were on the greeting. Would it be a handshake or a hug?

In the end, Mr Modi swooped in for two big bear hugs with the US president during their joint statements in the Rose Garden.

"Modi's affectionate-bear style of handshake combat has totally overwhelmed Trump's moray-eel style," one handshake watcher noted on Twitter.

"What a move from Modi. New take on the anti-Trump handshake," another commented.

Some noted Mr Modi was reluctant to let go.

"Watch Modi execute the double-handed pull on the hug exit. Concentrated force on opponent's point of weakness. The work of a true craftsman," one user tweeted.

Mr Modi's embraces have become a hallmark of his meetings with world leaders and dignitaries.

"That is a strong signal from the administration," Indian Foreign Secretary Dr. S. Jaishankar said in a press briefing, which was a round-up after Prime Minister Narendra Modi met U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House and held discussions on the bilateral relations of the two nations.

00:27   Pak targets LoC posts with mortar bombs on Eid night: Army
The Pakistani Army violated the ceasefire on Monday night by firing from automatic weapons and shelling mortars on Indian posts along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district, the Army said.

An eerie silence prevailed during the day in areas along the LoC in Poonch and Rajouri districts as people celebrated Eid.

Border guarding forces from either side too exchanged sweets on the International Border in Jammu to mark Eid-ul-Fitr, which marks culmination of the fasting month of Ramzan.

These areas have witnessed 20 ceasefire violations, an attack by Pakistan special forces team and two infiltration bids in June, in which four people including three jawans were killed died and 10 were injured.

"The Pakistani Army initiated unprovoked and indiscriminate firing from small arms and automatic weapons and shelling of mortar along the LoC in Bhimbher Gali sector in Rajouri district from 2015 hours (8.15 pm)," a defence spokesman said.

The Indian Army retaliated strongly and effectively, he said.
