20:26   Security beefed up at Kerala House amid rumours of beef fest
Security at Kerala House on Jantar Mantar road in New Delhi was beefed up following reports of a political party planning a 'beef festival' there in the evening.
Delhi Police said they received an information from Kerala House officials about the matter and security was stepped up as a precautionary measure.
"We were alerted by the Kerala House officials about an unverified information they received that some people belonging to a political party were planning to celebrate beef festival there at 6.30 PM.
"So we have deployed police force to handle them," said Deputy Commissioner of Police B K Singh.
Police sources, however, said the information appeared to be a rumour.
There was report that the Nationalist Congress Party has planned a 'beef festival' at the Kerala House in the evening.
Party MP D P Tripathi, however, termed the report as "baseless".
Last week, a "cow vigilante" group, claiming to belong to the Bharatiya Gauraksha Kranti, allegedly barged into Kerala House to protest the beef festivals recently held in the southern state.
Kerala House Resident Commissioner Vishwas Mehta had sought more security for the state guest house to protect it from "groups with vested interests", who could create trouble over the ongoing beef controversy.
Two years ago, Kerala House was mired in a similar controversy after the Delhi Police raided its canteen on receiving a complaint that it served beef.
However, the Kerala government and the canteen authorities denied the charge, saying it was buffalo meat.

19:37   Gandhi would have laughed at 'chatur baniya' remark: Mahatma's grandson
Gandhi laughed at cartoons of himself. He would have chuckled at the "chatur baniya" description also, but for its "utter tastelessness" and the hidden mischief in it, the Mahatma's grandson Gopalkrishna Gandhi said today.
"Gandhi laughed at cartoons of himself. He would have laughed at this one also but for its utter tastelessness and the hidden mischief in it," Gopalkrishna Gandhi, former West Bengal Governor, told PTI.

Historian Ramachandra Guha said the remark made by Amit Shah was "crude" and "unworthy" of the president of BJP, the country's ruling party.
When contacted, Guha, the author of 'India After Gandhi', strongly reacted to the comment made by Shah at an event in Raipur yesterday.
"The comment was crude and ill-informed, unworthy of the president of India's ruling party," Guha told PTI.
The BJP chief had yesterday referred to Mahatma Gandhi as a "chatur baniya" (a clever Baniya - the trading caste) while addressing a gathering in Raipur.
Shah's also said the Congress had never been a party based on principles and it was merely a "special purpose vehicle" to secure freedom.

18:59   Pak has crossed 'Lakshmana Rekha', no cricket with it: Sports Min
India cannot have a bilateral cricket series with Pakistan as it has crossed the "Lakshmana Rekha" by sponsoring terrorism in the country, Sports Minister Vijay Goel said today.
"For everything there is a Lakshmana Rekha," Goel, who is leading a 200-member Indian youth delegation to China, told the media.
"But when the line is crossed then a message has to be given. This (boycott) is a message," he said defending the policy not to have bilateral cricket series with Pakistan.

"We have clearly stated terrorism and sports cannot go side-by-side. As long as Pakistan doesn't stop cross border terror and (instigating) trouble in Kashmir..then there is no chance for bilateral series and also the national mood doesnt support it," Goel said.
He declined to comment on the letter written by Ramachandra Guha, one of the four members of Supreme Court- appointed Committee of Administrators, to implement the recommendations of the Justice R M Lodha panel to reform the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
Goel said the cricket is managed by the BCCI as well as the apex court and he would not like comment on the cricket-related issues.
He, however, referred to his ministry's proposal to have a sports code in India which should include cricket too.

18:36   Theresa May's two closest advisers quit after election debacle
British Prime Minister Theresa May's two closest advisers, Nick Timothy and Fiona Hill, resigned today after taking responsibility for the election debacle for the Conservative Party which failed to get a simple majority.
Timothy, one of two chiefs of staff on whom May relies heavily, said he took responsibility for his role in the Tory manifesto, criticised by many MPs, BBC reported.
Timothy, who has worked with May since she was in the Home Office, hoped MPs would get behind the Prime Minister for the good of Brexit.
"I take responsibility for the content of the whole manifesto, which I continue to believe is an honest and strong programme for government," he said in a post for Conservative Home.
May has said she intends to stay as prime minister despite failing to win a Conservative majority in the election. The Tories needed 326 seats to win but fell short by eight.

17:57   Aadhaar must for filing IT returns from July 1: CBDT
The Central Board of Direct Taxes today made it clear that Aadhaar will be a "must" for filing of income tax returns or for obtaining a new PAN from July 1.
The policy-making body of the Income Tax Department issued a statement stating that the Supreme Court yesterday had only given a "partial relief" to those who do not have an Aadhaar or an Aadhaar enrolment ID, and the taxman, hence, will not "cancel" their Permanent Account Number.
The CBDT issued a three-point "effect of the judgement" of the apex court statement saying:
From July 1, 2017 onwards every person eligible to obtain Aadhaar must quote their Aadhaar number or their Aadhaar enrolment ID number for filing of income tax returns as well as for applications for PAN.
"Everyone who has been allotted permanent account number as on the 1st day of July, 2017, and who has aadhaar number or is eligible to obtain Aadhaar number, shall intimate his Aadhaar number to income tax authorities for the purpose of linking PAN with Aadhaar," it said.
It explained what will happen in a case of "non-compliance" or where a person does not possess Aadhaar.
"Only a partial relief by the court has been given to those who do not have Aadhaar and who do not wish to obtain Aadhaar for the time being, that their PAN will not be cancelled so that other consequences under the Income Tax Act for failing to quote PAN may not arise," the CBDT said.
If the PAN is cancelled, then a person cannot do his normal banking and financial operations and hence this relief is given. But, it has been made clear that for filing of ITR or to obtain a new PAN, Aadhaar will be mandatory from July 1, a senior I-T official explained.

16:35   TN farmers temporarily call off stir following CM's assurance
A group of farmers, who resumed their protest in Chennai on Friday after ending their over a month-long stir in New Delhi pressing for various demands, on Saturday temporarily called off the protest following assurance from the chief minister that their demands would be met.
The farmers led by the National South Indian Rivers Inter-Linking Farmers Association chief P Ayyakannu had staged a protest for 40 days at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi pressing for various demands including  comprehensive drought relief.
They withdrew the agitation on April 23 after Chief  Minister K Palaniswami met them in New Delhi and promised tofulfil their demands.
However, they resumed an indefinite protest in Chennai on Friday alleging Palaniswami had failed to keep his promise given to them.
Ayyakannu on Saturday met Palaniswami and had a brief interaction with him.
After the meeting, Ayyakannu said it was decided to temporarily call off the stir following assurance from the chief minister that the state government would take necessary steps to solve their grievances.
"We have decided to withdraw the protest temporarily as he (Palaniswami) has assured us of looking into our demands. If our demands are not met in two months, we will resume our protests," Ayyakannu told reporters.
The farmers have been demanding loan waiver, drought-relief package of Rs 40,000 crore and setting up of the Cauvery Management Board among others.

15:43   Eggs hurled at Union agriculture minister's car in Odisha; 5 held
The Youth Congress activists in Odisha on Saturday hurled eggs at Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh's vehicle and waved black flags near the state guest house in protest against the death of five farmers
in Madhya Pradesh's Mandsaur district.
The incident took place when the union minster left the state guest house and was on his way to attend a programme on "Sabka Sath Sabka Bikas" in Jatani.
"Though the eggs did not hit the minister, one or two eggs fell in front of his vehicle," according to an eye witnesses.
The police arrested five Youth Congress workers including its state president Loknath Maharathy in this connection, DCP Satyabrata Bhoi said.
"Radha Mohan Singh has no moral right to remain in-charge of agriculture ministry after the killing of farmers in BJP ruled Madhya Pradesh," said Maharathy before he was taken into custody.
Meanwhile, the BJP strongly condemned the incident and blamed the state government for the incident.
"The Congress has lost its credibility across the country. I suspect the egg were hurled at the instance of the ruling BJD," Odisha BJP leader in-charge Arun Singh said.

13:48   'Amit Shah has insulted Mahatma'
M I Khan reports from Patna: What does Nitish Kumar think about BJP President Amit Shah's description of Mahatma Gandhi as a 'bahut chatur baniya (very shrewd baniya)'?

The Bihar chief minister -- who flagged off a year-long series of Gandhi Raths in April to make Biharis aware of the Mahatma's views -- ignored the media when they sought to quiz him about Shah's remark about Gandhi.

Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal-United party spokesperson Neeraj Kumar, however, told the media that Shah had insulted the nation and its people by using 'caste' to address the Mahatma.

'At a time when the country is celebrating 100 years of Gandhiji's Champaran Satyagraha, the BJP president has insulted him and 125 crore people," Neeraj Kumar said.

Rashtriya Janata Dal Spokesperson Pragati Mehta said Shah had exposed his and the BJP mindset by his remark.

Marumalarchi chief and ex-lawmaker Vaiko, who arrived in Chennai after not being allowed to enter Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur to attend a marriage, claimed on Saturday that he was deported because he was considered "a security threat" by the Malaysian authorities due to his links with the LTTE.

Vaiko returned to Chennai Friday night. The MDMK leader had been invited to attend the wedding of Penang Deputy Chief Minister P Ramasamy's daughter on June 10.

"As soon as I reached the check-in counter, they saw my name and said that I am blacklisted and can't enter Malaysia. Thereafter, I was taken to the immigration office where I was questioned for several hours," Vaiko said.

"They asked whether I was a Tamilian from Sri Lanka, I said no. I even showed them my ID card. They said that a lot of cases have been charged against me and asked me whether I belong to the LTTE. I said I am a supporter of the LTTE," he added.

Vaiko said he informed Ramasamy of the development, who contacted Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Young so that they could inform the security and immigration officials about the purpose of his visit.

"I showed them a wedding invitation. I told them that I had travelled to Kuala Lanpur in 2015 as well. Later, I apprised Deputy Chief Minister Ramasamy about this. He contacted Penang Chief Minister Lim Kuan. He later contacted the deputy prime minister to talk about my release," he said.

"The Penang Chief Minister told me that the officials are stubborn and that I am (seen as) a security threat to Malaysia. Later instructions came from the deputy PM's office not to allow me to enter Kuala Lumpur," he concluded.

10:20   As Chouhan goes on fast 'for peace', will MP's farmers meet him?
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan will undertake an indefinite fast "for peace" from today, in an attempt to restore peace among the farming community of the state.

Chouhan will begin his fast from 11 am at the Dussera Maidan where he will hold an open 'durbar' for agitating farmers to meet him.

Chouhan said on Friday, "I am not emotionless, and therefore, I will sit at BHEL's Dussera ground tomorrow at 11 am. I appeal to the farmers to come forward and discuss all the issues."

Maintaining that his government would deal with miscreants with an iron fist, Chouhan said his fast is an attempt to ensure peace in the state.

Farmers in Madhya Pradesh are demanding better prices for their produce as also a waiver on loan repayments.

The ruling BJP and the opposition Congress have locked horns over the farmers' agitation in Madhya Pradesh, with the former claiming that the latter was behind the chaos and violence in Mandsaur district that claimed six lives.

Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi and Janata Dal-United leader Sharad Yadav attempted to reach Mandsaur earlier this week to commiserate with the agitating farmers, but the police prevented their movement into the area.

Gandhi was even detained by the police under Section 151 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) before being released on bail after several hours.

08:33   Tennis star Zhang Shuai accuses United of insulting her
United Airlines is again in the news for wrong reasons. This time Chinese female tennis player Zhang Shuai has accused the airlines' staff of insulting her on a journey.

The airline was recently in hot waters for brutally dragging a passenger off a plane.

In a Facebook post, Shuai shared her experience at the departure gate on United Airlines flight UA735 from Tampa, Florida, to Washington on Thursday morning.

She said a staff member told her that her tennis bag exceeded the maximum size allowed in the passenger cabin, took it away without her permission and tagged the bag with a check-in tape.

'Customer service of United Airlines staff was so so so terrible! I was at the gate waiting for my flight UA735 from Tampa/St. Petersburg to Washington-Dulles on my way back to Beijing. At the gate, a UA female staff (see the lady in the pictures) said my tennis bag exceeded the maximum measurement size and took away my bag without my permission (sic),' read the post.

The Chinese tennis star further added: 'When I took out a shoulder bag from the tennis bag, she said I now have 3 carry-ons and only 2 are allowed! So I put the shoulder bag back into the tennis bag, but she claimed the bag now is too big! I started with 2 carry-ons, one tennis bag and one backpack, both of which fit into the measurement scale for carry-on bags, but she refused to let me board with the tennis bag (sic).'

Shuai claimed that the staff member even manually stretched out and fully expanded her tennis bag so that it would appear to exceed the maximum length of a carry-on, and she took a photo of it as proof that it doesn't meet the size requirement.

'While I was sitting in the waiting area of the gate, again without my permission, she walked over and took away my tennis bag and tagged it with a check-in tape! She even physically grabbed my passport and boarding passes from my hand. When I attempted to take back my passport and boarding passes and asked her not to touch my personal belongings, she fiercely responded 'Don't touch me!' This UA staff was so aggressive in the process that my boarding pass was torn apart into 2 pieces!' said Shuai's post.

The indictment on Friday by a federal grand jury against Purinton, 51, of Olathe, Kansas, comes after a February 22 shooting at a city bar.

Witnesses said Purinton yelled at the two Indian men to "get out of my country" before pulling the trigger in the attack.

Ian Grillot, a 24-year-old American man, was also injured while intervening in the shooting.

08:10   Trump speaks to May, offers 'warm support'
US President Donald Trump spoke over phone with British Prime Minister Theresa May to offer his "warm support" after her Conservative party failed to muster a simple majority in the Britain's snap polls.

"President Trump emphasised his commitment to the United States-United Kingdom special relationship and underscored that he looks forward to working with the prime minister on shared goals and interests in the years to come," the White House said in a statement.

May's gamble of calling snap polls backfired after the British electorate delivered a hung parliament and forcing her to seek the support of a small Northern Irish party for staying in power, as the country braces for hard Brexit talks.

With results declared for all of the 650 seats of the British parliament, the Conservatives won 318 while the opposition Labour secured 262, leaving neither party anywhere close to the 326 seats required for an overall majority.

00:48   Ex-IAF chief calls for 'ruthless measures' to combat terrorism in Kashmir
Former IAF head Air Chief Marshal P V Naik has called for "ruthless measures" -- including the use of air power and special zones where intruders can be killed without a warning -- to combat terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Indian Air Force veteran, in an interview to PTI, suggested a slew of methods, which, he said, could be "better accomplished" under a few months of Governors Rule.

"Hard decisions will have to be taken...It (the situation) demands something which others feel we as a nation lack: Ruthlessness," he said.
Naik, who was the IAF chief from 2009 to 2011, said there had to be a "more effective use" of air power, so far "underutilised" in the valley.
The retired IAF chief's aggressive views on battling militancy followed Army Chief General Bipin Rawat's position that the Army faced a "dirty war" in the valley.
"This is a proxy war and proxy war is a dirty war. It is played in a dirty way," Rawat told PTI last month.
Fifty-nine Army personnel have been killed in counter- terror operations in J&K since 2016. Twenty-two infiltration attempts have been foiled so far this year and 34 armed intruders killed on the LoC, according to official figures.
Naik believed "Red Zones" should be declared in infiltration prone areas near the LOC.
"Each zone should be a bubble 10 km in depth and include airspace above. Any unauthorised movement in this zone should be treated as inimical," he said.
"We must start thinking along these lines if we are to control terrorism in the Kashmir valley," he added.
Special forces with a clear mandate needed to be deployed to "seek and destroy" foreign terrorists, said Naik, now leading a retired life in Pune.
