Last week member of Parliament from Lakshadweep P P Mohammed Faizal of the Nationalist Congress Party had complained that the Navy and Coast Guard had not done enough in the aftermath of the Ockhi cyclone.

The MP, who had been stranded in Cochin then, has now reached the islands to be with his people and family.

Speaking to Rediff.com on the phone today, he said, "The Navy ships laden with emergency supplies have docked here and we are distributing the material to the people. We are lucky there are no missing fishermen from our islands.

"Many houses and boats and public infrastructure like roads have been totally destroyed by the Cyclone. Whatever funds we had at our disposal has already been distributed to the people.

"We are in the process of enumerating the damage caused to buildings, roads and boats. This process will take some time but we are doing it thoroughly. You know the government's attention is now tuned to elections in two states and so I am waiting for them to get out of the way.

"Once the elections are over I will present a bill for the damages caused here and the government will give us the funds. We will make sure that every road, house and boat is replaced.

"We are very lucky that in spite of the ferociousness of the cyclone there was no loss of life here. This was mainly because we had become alert when the cyclone struck Tamil Nadu and Kerala and we knew it was coming straight here.

"I have been keeping an eye on the relief work and am very satisfied with the work of the Lakshadweep administration and the Navy."
