23:51   Senior SC lawyer Rajeev Dhavan quits practice, cites 'humiliation' in court
Senior Supreme Court advocate Rajeev Dhavan today called it quits after what he described as a "humiliating end" to the sensational Delhi government-Centre dispute case.
In a letter addressed to Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, the 74-year-old lawyer said he had decided to give up court practice.
"After the humiliating end to the Delhi case, I have decided to give up court practice. You are entitled to take back the senior gown conferred on me, though I would like to keep it for memory and the services rendered," read the letter.
When contacted, Dhavan refused to speak on the issue.

The surprise announcement comes days after the apex court reserved its verdict on the Delhi-Centre case, i.e whether the Lieutenant Governor or the Delhi government enjoys supremacy in the administration of the national capital.
On December 6, just before the conclusion of the hearing in the case, heated exchanges were witnessed between the Chief Justice and Dhavan.
The senior lawyer was appearing for the Delhi government in the case besides their lead counsel Gopal Subramanium.
In the Delhi-Centre dispute hearing, Dhavan had made some submissions which were not appreciated by the bench.
"Come what may, shouting in the courtroom will not be tolerated at any cost," the CJI had observed.
Besides the Delhi-Centre case, Dhavan has represented a number of high-profile cases like the Babri-Ram Janmabhoomi dispute, SEBI-Sahara, Rohingya refugees among others. -- PTI

23:45   We seek answers from 'Maun-saheb': Rahul takes a dig at PM
Newly-elected Congress president Rahul Gandhi today targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the issue of corruption, saying he was waiting to hear from the latter on the issue.
"The list is long," tweeted Gandhi, while referring to the alleged scams related to the Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation, power companies, the metro project and Jay Shah, the son of BJP president Amit Shah.
He also taunted Modi by calling him "maun-saheb" (the silent one).
"PM is silent on GSPC, power-metro and Shah-zaada scams and is busy filling the coffers of friends. We seek answers from Maun-saheb. For whose good days had he formed the Government (sic)?," Gandhi tweeted.
He also raised the issue of the Gujarat government's accountability by asking the prime minister, "Why did you sideline the Lokpal when you had promised to ensure an accountable government?"
Gandhi raised these questions as part of his ongoing "one query a day" series, targeting the ruling BJP in Gujarat, the home state of Modi which has been under the saffron party's rule for 22 years.
The first phase of the Gujarat Assembly polls was held on December, while the second and final phase is scheduled for December 14. The counting of votes will be taken up on December 18. -- PTI

23:05   Cow protection movement not against Muslims, Christians: RSS
Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh general secretary Suresh Bhaiyyaji Joshi today said the cow protection movement is not directed against Muslims and Christians and that it is being given a communal color "unnecessarily".
He said demands related to "caste, region and language cannot bring about a change in society but Hindutva can".
"Confusion is being created with regard to the cow protection movement. It is not directed against Muslims and Christians. It is linked to the pride of the nation. A communal colour is being given to it unnecessarily," Joshi
said in Meerut.
"We need to make the people aware about those who spread canards about cow protection and fan tension by giving a communal color to such issues," he said.
Joshi also stressed the need to bring about a change in the mindset to check the menace of female infanticide, untouchability, dowry, pollution, etc.
"Enacting laws is not a solutions to such problems," he said. -- PTI

22:57   Congress entrapped in Blue Whale game, final episode on Dec 18: PM
The Congress is "entrapped" in Blue Whale challenge and will see the final episode on December 18, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said today, invoking the dangerous online game which culminates in the player committing suicide, to attack the opposition party.
Addressing a rally in Patan in northern Gujarat on the penultimate day of campaigning for the second and final phase of assembly polls, Modi targeted Congress's president-elect Rahul Gandhi, saying he was born with a "golden spoon" and has not seen poverty.
He also rejected allegations levelled by Rahul Gandhi that he works only for a few industrialists, and accused him of spreading "falsehood and half-truths" about Gujarat and trying to "fool and insult" the intelligence of the people of the state.
"When there are indications that the BJP has emerged victorious in the first round (of voting held on December 9), Congressmen are busy trying to find ways to defend Rahul Gandhi. One hour after the start of voting, senior leaders started shouting EVM...EVM...EVM..EVM.
One senior leader, he said, even claimed that an EVM was hacked by connecting it to bluetooth.
"They do not understand that the EVM is a standalone machine, it has no Internet, it cannot get connected to bluetooth. Can you connect your pen to a bluetooth?" Modi asked the crowd.
"They are shouting bluetooth, bluetooth (a low-power wireless connectivity technology), but actually they are entrapped in Blue Whale game and the final episode of the game will be played on December 18," Modi said.
Counting of votes for the keenly contested Gujarat election is scheduled for December 18.
Blue Whale is a mobile game in which participants are instructed to complete a range of challenges --  the final of which is committing suicide. According to reports, a large number of young people who played the game have ended their lives. -- PTI

22:37   Ex-BJP MP shares stage with Rahul Gandhi; hits out at PM
Nana Patole, who recently resigned from Lok Sabha and the BJP, today shared stage with Congress president-elect Rahul Gandhi at election rally in Gandhinagar and fulminated against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, claiming he "abused" senior MPs who had once gone to meet him.
Addressing the rally, Patole said he decided to part ways with the BJP because Modi failed to address the issues of farmers and went back on his promise to implement the Swaminathan Commission recommendations.
The former MP from Maharashtra's Bhandara-Gondia constituency also alleged that Modi snubbed him and abused elderly MPs who once went to meet him at his residence.
"It has been more than three years since the Modi government has been at the Centre. Modiji had assured that he will implement the Swaminathan Commission recommendations, but the first thing he did was to file an affidavit in the Supreme Court saying he will not accept the recommendations, which amounts to betrayal of farmers," Patole said.
There has been a rise in incidents of farmer suicide, he alleged.
"Once Modiji called a meeting of MPs from different states at his residence before the winter session of Parliament. When some elderly MPs rose to ask him questions, he abused them and asked them to sit down. He also shouted at me when I asked him about a separate ministry for OBCs," he claimed.

Patole accused Modi of playing the OBC card for political gains. He alleged the prime minister was playing with the future of children of OBC, SC and ST categories by stopping their scholarships.
Patole, who had defeated NCP stalwart Praful Patel in the last Lok Sabha poll, claimed noteban was the biggest instance of "corruption." -- PTI

21:41   Jaitley rules out PM apology over Pak conspiracy charges
Virtually ruling out an apology by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today charged former prime minister Manmohan Singh with defying the national line by meeting Pakistani diplomats and
demanded to know the context, relevance and necessity of such a meet.
Terming the meeting as "political misadventure", Jaitley wanted Singh and the Congress to explain the context of attending the dinner hosted by suspended party leader Mani Shankar Aiyar for Pakistani diplomats.
He said the main Opposition party is expected to follow the national policy, which states that terror and talks cannot go hand-in-hand.
"Is (the) main opposition party not part of the State?" he asked.
Jaitley said that if anyone defies the national line, he should be prepared to answer questions.
"It is a political misadventure, it has a political cost," he said.
Jaitley addressed a press conference hours after Singh asked the Prime Minister to apologise to the nation for setting a "dangerous precedent".
He wanted the former prime minister to explain what transpired at the meeting and went on to defend his government's track record of fighting terror, saying no government in the past has a track record this government
has in fighting terrorism.
In response to Singh's demand for apology, Jaitley further said people who have violated the national policy of talks and terror not going hand in hand should apologise. -- PTI

18:16   AIADMK MPs to get free apartments worth Rs 4 crore in Chennai
AIADMK MPs are likely to get four bedroom apartments from the Tamil Nadu government which they can use for their life time. Free.

The apartments are in Thirumangalam Anna Nagar in Chennai and are worth around Rs four crore.

This bonanza for the MPs are said to have been approved by the Tamil Nadu Cabinet on Thursday.

Chief Minister E Palaniswamy has given an in-principal approval to bring a cabinet note. This scheme will prevent the CPM, CPI and DMK MPs from getting benefits.

Anwar Raza, the AIADMK MP from Ramanathapuram raised the free accommodation issue in the AIADMK MPs meet in Chennai yesterday. The CM has since approved this scheme.

There are 39 AIADMK MPs from Lok Sabha. Out of the 39, at least 32, will get government flats. The remaining seven MPs are stationed in Chennai and they have their own houses.

The apartments are strictly for those MPs who have no homes in Chennai. These MPs are from interior districts of Tamil Nadu and moreover are those who are fence sitters between the TTV Dinakaran camp and the EPS camp.

This demand for free housing has been pending with the Tamil Nadu Government since J Jayalalitha's days as CM, and the E Palaniswamay has finally agreed to allot the flats.

There is no Congress MP from Tamil Nadu. DMK MPs from Rajya Sabha have however own a flat in Chennai, and are therefore disqualified to get the free lifetime accommodation.

Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad on Monday expressed happiness on the elevation of Rahul Gandhi as party president and said the latter has shown a lot of mettle over a period of time and will be able to execute his responsibility well.

"Entire country has lot of expectations from Rahul Gandhi. He has shown his mettle over a period of time and particularly in the ongoing election in Gujarat. Much before he was elected he has made Prime Minister Modi rattled," Azad said. "He knows his responsibility and priorities very well," he added.

Echoing similar sentiments, former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said at the time when the situation is 'worst under the ruling government', elevation of Rahul will prove to be good. -- ANI

17:27   'Anguished' Manmohan responds to Modi: Did not discuss Gujarat polls
Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh's statement on PM Modi's allegations at an election rally that there was an attempt by Pakistan to interfere in the Gujarat polls. Modi alleged that Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar had held a meeting at his house which was attended by former prime minister Manmohan Singh, a former Indian vice president, Pakistan's high commissioner in India, and a former Pakistani foreign minister.

Dr Singh issued this statement today: "I am deeply pained and anguished by the falsehood and canards being spread to score political points in a lost cause by none less than PM Shri Narendra Modi.

"I am deeply pained and anguished by the falsehood and canards being spread to score political points in a lost cause by none less than Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi. Fearing imminent defeat in Gujarat, the desperation of the Prime Minister to hurl every abuse and latch on to every straw is palpable. Sadly & regrettably, Shri Modi is setting a dangerous precedent by his insatiable desire to tarnish every constitutional office, including that of a former Prime Minister and Army Chief.

"The Congress Party needs no sermons on "Nationalism" from a party and Prime Minister, whose compromised track record on fighting terrorism is well known.

"Let remind Shri Narendra Modi that he had gone to Pakistan uninvited after the terrorist attacks in Udhampur and Gurdaspur. Let him also tell the country the reason for inviting the infamous ISI of Pakistan to our strategic Air Base in Pathankot to investigate a terror attack that emanated from Pakistan.

"My track record of public service to the country over the last five decades is known to everyone. No one, including Shri Modi, can  lamely question it to gain lost political ground.

"I reject the innuendos and falsehoods as I did not discuss Gujarat elections with anyone else at the dinner hosted by Shri Mani Shankar Aiyar as alleged by Shri Modi.

"Nor was the Gujarat issue raised by anyone else present at the dinner. The discussion was confined to India Pakistan relations.

"Names of the distinguished Indian public servants and journalists present at the dinner are enclosed to this statement. None of them could be accused of indulging in any anti-national activities.

"I sincerely hope that Prime Minister will show the maturity and gravitas expected of the high office he holds instead of concentrating his energy solely on erroneously conceived brownie points. I  sincerely hope that he will apologize to the nation for his ill thought transgression to restore the dignity of the office he occupies."

16:48   Lakshadweep MP now says he is happy with Navy's cyclone relief work
Last week member of Parliament from Lakshadweep P P Mohammed Faizal of the Nationalist Congress Party had complained that the Navy and Coast Guard had not done enough in the aftermath of the Ockhi cyclone.

The MP, who had been stranded in Cochin then, has now reached the islands to be with his people and family.

Speaking to Rediff.com on the phone today, he said, "The Navy ships laden with emergency supplies have docked here and we are distributing the material to the people. We are lucky there are no missing fishermen from our islands.

"Many houses and boats and public infrastructure like roads have been totally destroyed by the Cyclone. Whatever funds we had at our disposal has already been distributed to the people.

"We are in the process of enumerating the damage caused to buildings, roads and boats. This process will take some time but we are doing it thoroughly. You know the government's attention is now tuned to elections in two states and so I am waiting for them to get out of the way.

"Once the elections are over I will present a bill for the damages caused here and the government will give us the funds. We will make sure that every road, house and boat is replaced.

"We are very lucky that in spite of the ferociousness of the cyclone there was no loss of life here. This was mainly because we had become alert when the cyclone struck Tamil Nadu and Kerala and we knew it was coming straight here.

"I have been keeping an eye on the relief work and am very satisfied with the work of the Lakshadweep administration and the Navy."

16:08   Indian economy to grow at 7.5% in 2018: Nomura
Global investment bank Nomura has predicted India's economy to register a 7.5 per cent growth rate in 2018, saying it is on the cusp of a cyclical recovery.

India's Gross Domestic Product growth bottomed-out in the second quarter of 2017 at 5.7 per cent year-on-year, rising to 6.3 per cent in the third quarter, it said. It has forecast 6.7 per cent in the fourth quarter and a full-year growth of 6.2 per cent this year, rising to 7.5 per cent in 2018, it said.

"We remain bullish on India's macroeconomic outlook," Nomura said in its Asian economic outlook 2018. The Indian economy is on the cusp of a cyclical recovery and the government has continued to implement structural reforms and prudent macro policies, the tangible benefits of which may be harder to pinpoint right now, but over time will be positive for growth, it said in the report. Higher crude oil prices and state election results are the main risks, it said. Given the base effects, Nomura expects the growth in the first half of 2018 to be at 7.8 per cent, higher than the 7.1 per cent of the second half of 2017.

"Further out, we expect a growth of 7.3 per cent in 2019 -- a solid print, aided by manufacturing and private services on the supply side and investment and private consumption on the demand side," the report said.

It listed out factors supporting a strong growth. It would be the normalisation of Goods and Services Tax- related supply disruptions; the positive effects of bank recapitalisation, a positive remonetisation impulse and a positive fiscal impulse.  -- PTI

The 47-year-old Gandhi will be the sixth Nehru-Gandhi scion to helm the party. His mother and incumbent party president Sonia Gandhi had signed the first nomination paper for the election of her son.

The BJP says this was an election that he was bound to win since dynastic succession is the norm.

15:02   Bharatmatas unequal children
Religious bigotry has official sanction in the new India. It is fashionable in saffron circles and common among the middle class. The common refrain is that India is a Hindu country and finally the majority community need not be apologetic any more about it. Brazen bigotry is the zeitgeist of the ruling Hindu right-wing BJP, whose icons, such as Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Adityanath, openly trash secularism and want those who introduced the concept in independent India to be penalised.

14:51   Touched her unintentionally, says Zaira's 'molester'
The man accused of molesting Dangal actress, Zaira Wasim, during a Vistara Delhi-Mumbai flight has told the police that his leg touched the star unintentionally and that he had apologised to her after she raised an alarm.

Vikas Sachdev (39), who stays in Andheri in suburban Mumbai, said he was returning from Delhi after attending a funeral and was exhausted as he hadn't slept in a while.

He said he had in fact asked the cabin crew not to disturb him during the flight and chose not to eat his meal as he wanted to sleep throughout the flight.

Vikas's claims match the official statement given by Vistara to the Mumbai Police, which is investigating the alleged molestation.

According to Vikas, he apologised to the actor after finding out that his leg had had touched her shoulder.

Vikas' wife Divya, supported her husband's claim. "My husband was coming home from Delhi. His mamaji (maternal uncle) had passed away and he was not in the right frame of mind. He was feeling very low and asked for a blanket. He wanted to sleep. I am shocked at (the actor's) allegation. The police have taken my husband into custody," Divya said.

A case under the POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act and Indian Penal Code Section 354 (assault with intention to outrage a woman's modesty) was registered against Vikas Sachdev. The POSCO act was invoked since the actor is a minor.

According to sources, after the incident, came to light a team of three Vistara officials flew to Mumbai from Delhi to take note of the incident. A meeting between the actor and the officials was organised at a hotel in Mumbai. The meeting went on for over an hour where the star narrated the incident in front of the Vistara officials.

14:07   Incredible! Shatrughan slams PM's Cong-Pak nexus story
BJP MP Shatrughan Sinha, not on the best of terms with the ruling BJP, and considered a rebel, tweets after the PM yesterday claimed at an election rally that there was an attempt by Pakistan to interfere in the Gujarat polls. Modi also raised questions about the alleged appeal by former director general (DG) of the Pakistan Army Sardar Arshad Rafiq for making senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel chief minister of Gujarat.  Modi alleged that Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar had held a meeting at his house which was attended by former prime minister Manmohan Singh, a former Indian vice president, Pakistan's high commissioner in India, and a former Pakistani foreign minister.

Sinha tweeted,

"Hon'ble Sir!  Just to win elections anyhow, and that too at the fag end of the process, is it a must to come up with & endorse new, unsubstantiated & unbelievable stories everyday against political opponents? Now linking them to Pak High Commissioner & Generals?! Incredible!.

"Sir! Instead of new twists & turns, stories & cover ups, let's go straight to the promises that we made, regarding housing, development, employment of youth, health, "Vikas model". Lets stop communalising the atmosphere & go back to healthy politics & healthy elections. Jai Hind!"

While he did not name anybody in the tweets, the actor-turned-politician - who has never minced his words and has been critic of the BJP leadership, including the PM, did not leave much room for doubt.

13:22   Anushka-Virat wedding tomorrow?
The much-awaited Anushka Sharma, Virat Kohli wedding is in all likelihood set to take place on December 12.

Confirming this, a friend and co-star of actress Anushka Sharma, who does not want to be named added, "She has mentioned her wedding plans, but there was no invitation. She made it very clear that the wedding would be a very intimate family affair."

Apparently both Anushka's and Virat's families want to keep the marriage as low-key as possible. "The decision to move the venue of the wedding outside India and to keep the guest list extremely restricted was taken by both the families, who met and agreed on the venue and the date," says the source.

Though Anushka's spokesperson denied reports about her wedding, she was spotted at Mumbai airport on Thursday night with her family and their family guru Maharaj Anant Baba.

The Sharmas were reportedly flying to Milan with Virat and his family scheduled to join them from Delhi.

If reports are to be believed, the couple have only invited close friends to the wedding -- a villa in Tuscany has reportedly been booked for the occasion -- and that may include Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Sachin Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh.

Mumbai newspapers reported that Colonel Ajay Sharma (retd), Anushka's dad, has invited the family's neighbours to a reception in Mumbai later this month.

Pakistan's Foreign Office spokesman Mohammad Faisal had said on Twitter:  India should stop dragging Pakistan into its electoral debate and win victories on own strength rather than fabricated conspiracies, which are utterly baseless and irresponsible."

12:44   Don't drag us into your domestic politics, Pak tells India
Pakistan today said India's politicians should not drag the country into its domestic politics during campaigning for the Gujarat assembly polls.

"India should stop dragging Pakistan into its electoral debate and win victories on own strength rather than fabricated conspiracies, which are utterly baseless and irresponsible," Pakistan's Foreign Office spokesman Mohammad Faisal said on Twitter.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday claimed at an election rally that there was an attempt by Pakistan to interfere in the Gujarat polls.

"On one hand, Pakistan Army's former DG is interfering in Gujarat's election, and on the other, Pakistani people are holding a meeting at Mani Shankar Aiyar's house. After that meeting, people of Gujarat, backward communities, poor people and Modi were insulted. Don't you think such events raise doubts?" the prime minister had said while addressing a poll rally in Gujarat. -- PTI

11:46   SC dismisses plea against bail to Ryan trustees
The Supreme Court today dismissed a plea challenging the anticipatory bail granted to three trustees of the Ryan International Group in connection with the killing of a student in the school premises. A bench of Justices R K Agrawal and A M Sapre said the "petition is dismissed."

The court had earlier reserved the order on the plea of the father of 7-year-old boy, who was found dead in Ryan International School in Gurgaon, challenging the anticipatory bail granted to the trustees of the group.

Pradhyumn, a Class II student, was found with his throat slit in the school washroom in Gurgaon on September 8. School bus conductor Ashok Kumar was earlier arrested by Haryana Police in connection with the crime. He was recently granted bail by a lower court.

The case was transferred to the CBI and the agency had apprehended a Class 11 student in connection with the killing. The high court had on November 21 granted anticipatory bail to Ryan International Group CEO Ryan Pinto and his parents -- founding chairman Augustine Pinto and managing director Grace Pinto, in connection with the killing of the boy.

11:03   Acche Din? Not for BJP's Gujarat campaign
Who would have thought that something Mani Shankar Aiyar said would become an issue, and perhaps THE issue, of a Gujarat election?

I certainly did not and nor do I think it is an issue of the size in Gujarat that people think outside it is.

When I heard about the scandalous remark, I checked my Gujarati dictionary, which translates 'neech' as 'dusht'. The English translations are 'wicked', 'vile' and 'mean'.

Should Aiyar have used the word? No: Political debate, and all debate must be civil. But does it have a meaning that links it to caste? No.

Roadshows by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in Ahmedabad tomorrow cannot be held as the police has refused permission, citing security issues and public inconveniences, Anup Kumar Singh, Police Commissioner, Ahmedabad, said.

There is a likelihood of an overlap in the road shows of PM Modi and Rahul Gandhi.

Both roadshows would have passed crowded areas, which would have caused major inconveniences to people.

Tomorrow is the last day of campaigning for the second round of voting in Gujarat.

The results will be announced on December 18.

09:00   Why didn't Manmohan show courage to order strikes post 26/11: Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing a public rally on Sunday night asked his predecessor Manmohan Singh why did he not show the courage to order a surgical strike post the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, despite the readiness of the army.

He said after the Mumbai attacks, the Air Force had approached the then prime minister Singh with a plan for surgical strikes, but the government did not show the courage to order it.

"Under whose advice did he (Singh) do so," Modi asked the gathering at the Navlakhi compound in Vadodara."Someone who served at a high position in the Air Force has said that after 26/11, they went to the then prime minister with a plan for surgical strikes. Sadly, the then government did not show the courage to do that," Modi said and cited the example of his government's action in the aftermath of the Uri terror attack in September last year.

"My government, in the aftermath of the Uri attack by Pakistan, had launched a surgical strike inside the borders of Pakistan, targeting several terror camps and launchpads. The strikes came as a surprise for the Pakistanis who were caught unaware. While the maximum damage was inflicted on their side, the Indian soldiers came back without any casualties," he added.

Modi also questioned Congress leaders, including its vice president Rahul Gandhi, for raising doubts over the surgical strikes."Are such secret matters to be discussed in public?" he asked, saying this was the difference between the NDA government and the UPA government.

08:41   In first winter stay, 1,800 Chinese troops camping at Doklam
Around 1,600-1,800 Chinese troops have now virtually established a permanent presence in the Doklam area, near the Sikkim-Bhutan-Tibet trijunction, with the construction of two helipads, upgraded roads, scores of pre-fabricated huts, shelters and stores to withstand the freezing winter in the high-altitude region.

Indian security establishment sources said while India "achieved its strategic objective" of not letting China extend its existing road in Doklam southwards towards the Jampheri ridge, the fallout has been "the almost permanent stationing of People's Liberation Army troops in the region".

"Earlier, PLA patrols would come to Doklam, which is disputed between China and Bhutan, between April-May and October-November every year to mark their presence and lay claim to the area before going back," said a source.

"Now, after the 73-day eyeball-to-eyeball troop confrontation at Doklam between India and China ended on August 28, the PLA troops have stayed put in what we consider to be Bhutanese territory for the first time this winter. But the status quo prevails at the earlier face-off site," he added.

This fits in with what the Army chief, General Bipin Rawat, meant when he warned in September that China would continue with its efforts to nibble away disputed territories through "salami slicing", muscle-flexing and other measures. With Indian troops deployed in tactically dominating positions in the trijunction region, China is keen to usurp Doklam to add strategic depth to its narrow Chumbi Valley, which juts in between Sikkim and Bhutan.
