20:21   Can't say where Pathankot terrorists entered from: BSF contradicts MoS Home
The BSF today said the exact area from where terrorists who attacked the Pathankot IAF base infiltrated is still a matter of "conjecture" and that there was no direct evidence of a breach in the security system along the Indo-Pak border.

Minister of State for Home Hansraj Gangaram Ahir had on Tuesday said in a written reply in Lok Sabha that "four Pakistan-based terrorists entered Punjab via Janial road, Dhusi turn, near Ravi river bridge, Gulpur Simli village-Akalgarh and attacked airforce station in Pathankot."

Border Security Force chief K K Sharma said there are many "variables" on the border, marked by riverine gaps and other unguarded patches and Pathankot could be one of those. "That is still a matter of conjecture. It is suspected they came from this area (as mentioned in the Minister's reply)... But there is no direct evidence of a breach (of the border fence)," he said.

The DG added that due to riverine areas and other gaps in the undulating terrain on the border, it is "not possible to erect a fence" everywhere. Putting an end to speculation about the number of terrorists involved in the Pathankot attack, Ahir's statement made it clear that only four terrorists had entered the airforce station to carry out the strike.

The answer was seen as contrary to a statement made by Home Minister Rajnath Singh on March 4. He had said that charred remains, apart from four bodies of terrorists, were found at the debris after security forces searched the Pathankot airforce station when the operation ended.

All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen chief Asaduddin Owaisi has welcomed the Supreme Court's direction today that cinema halls across the country must play national anthem before the screening of a film, but wondered if it would help boost the feeling of patriotism.

"In India, the left lost the battle. But this month, at what was described as "a conclave of ideas' organized by the Hindu right, I was reminded of a simple truth: Winning is not everything. The right wing won an electoral mandate in 2014, but it still has a tremendous sense of intellectual inadequacy. The conclave here in Goa was about building what is regularly described on Indian social media as a "right-wing ecosystem' to counter the left's alleged control of the news media and academia."

16:11   Pakistani embassy in US raided over Ohio terror attack
Just in: Pakistani embassy in New York, raided over Ohio terror attack.

The Somali-born student, who injured 11 people in a car-and-knife attack at Ohio State University before being shot and killed, had lived in Pakistan along with his family for about seven years.

The 18-year-old attacker, identified as Abdul Razak Ali Artan, was a Somali refugee who left his homeland with his family in 2007, lived in Pakistan and then came to the United States in 2014 as a legal permanent resident, NBC News quoted law enforcement officials as saying.

He temporarily lived in Dallas before settling in Ohio.

He rammed his car into a crowd at Ohio State University on Monday and attacked them with a butcher knife, injuring 11 before police fatally shot him.

Investigators are investigating whether the attack was an act of terror by Artan, who had once criticised the media for its portrayal of Muslims.

In a magazine in August, he was quoted as saying that he is scared to pray in the public because of media coverage of the religion.

"I'm a Muslim, it's not what the media portrays me to be. If people look at me, a Muslim praying, I don't know what they're going to think, what's going to happen. But, I don't blame them. It's the media that put that picture in their heads," Artan had aid.

He also appears to have made an anti-US posting on Facebook minutes before the attack, on a page that was quickly disabled or taken down by authorities, US media said.

15:09   Rahul tasks Jairam Ramesh with editing National Herald
Congress VP Rahul Gandhi has tasked colleague and former MP Jairam Ramesh with taking up the role of Editorial Coordinator for the National Herald newspaper.

Ramesh has accepted the assignment.

Sources tell us that Ramesh has been writing editorials for the online edition of National Herald, which gets just about 650 to 700 hits a day. The online edition is yet to become popular, but the Congress has approached the issue with a certain amount of thought. Instead of launching a big buck broadsheet edition, the party has decided to first assess public reaction to the paper in its online avataar and then may be take a call about a daily.

The National Herald case is being heard in a Delhi court filed by Subramanian Swamy against Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, their companies and associated persons. As per the complaint filed in the court of the Metropolitan Magistrate, the Congress granted an interest-free loan of Rs 90.25 crore to Associated Journals Limited (AJL), owner of the National Herald newspaper which was established by Jawaharlal Nehru and other freedom fighters in 1938. It was alleged that the loan was either not repaid or repaid in cash, which is in violation of Section 269T of the Income Tax Act, 1961. Swamy alleged criminal misappropriation by both Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.

At the crux of the problem is a permission that the Bank of India branch in Alipuduar has not received from senior officials of the bank to release funds to the Majherdabri management under a pay formula given by the RBI.  Read more

13:22   "Intolerant" Congress indulging in contempt of democracy: Govt.
Extremely upset over the Congress staging a walkout from the Lok Sabha despite the government agreeing to discuss all issues, Union Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu on Wednesday said that the grand old party was now indulging in contempt of democracy as they have become intolerant over the growing popularity of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"The way the Congress has behaved in the House, they have insulted the whole country. It is contempt of democracy. They are trying to insult the mandate of the people because they have become intolerant over the growing popularity of the Prime Minister," he added.

Naidu said it is extremely unfortunate that the grand old party is doing politics over yesterday's Nagrota terror attack.

"The Congress and its allies wanted the Prime Minister's presence in the House. He came in the House and no one knows why they left. We don't know whether even they know the reason. During the Question Hour, the Congress raised the issue of Nagrota attack. The Speaker said that combing operation is currently going on. She said after getting all the necessary information, obituary will be paid to the slain soldiers," Naidu said.

Naidu said it has become the job of the grand old party to somehow disrupt the proceedings of the House.

"We said we don't have any objection but there must be tradition and discipline in the House. It is very much unfortunate that the Congress Party is doing politics over this. The people of the country hate such politics. It has become their job to somehow disrupt the proceedings of the House," said Naidu.

"Even the Prime Minister is in the House.still I don't know why they are not allowing the proceedings of the House. The nation wants discussion on many problems, but the Congress doesn't want that. Does the Congress fear of getting exposed?" he added.

Stating that the Congress neither wants a debate nor wants the House to function, Naidu further said this is not expected from a matured party, which has ruled the country for these many number of years.

12:52   Terrorists no more deterred from attacking our armed forces: Omar
Claiming that surgical strikes have failed to "deter" militants, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has asked the Centre to explain its Pakistan policy to the nation after seven army personnel were killed by terrorists in Nagrota.

"So on a day on which 7 of our brave soldiers lost their lives to terrorist bullets the government must explain its Pakistan policy to nation," Omar wrote on Twitter late last night after the Nagrota attack.

"It is also true that terrorists are no more deterred from attacking our armed forces today than they were prior to the 'surgical strikes'!" he wrote.

Jammu region was rocked by two terror attacks yesterday in which 7 army personnel, including two Major-rank officers, were killed and eight other security men, including a BSF DIG, were injured, before six heavily-armed terrorists were eliminated in the separate fierce encounters.

Taking a dig at the BJP, the National Conference working president claimed Pakistan was no more isolated internationally now than it was six months ago. "Regardless of what BJP spokespersons would have us believe, Pakistan is no more isolated internationally today than it was 6 months ago," he said.

12:35   Sharad Yadav, Jaitley exchange barbs in RS
Leader of Opposition Arun Jaitley and JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav today exchanged sharp barbs in the Rajya Sabha over the demonetisation issue as the Opposition stalled the pre-noon proceedings.

The incident happened when members of the Congress, TMC, BSP and SP created a ruckus over their demand that the House mourn the killing of 25 armymen since surgical strikes and deaths of 82 persons in post-demonetisation hardships.

Yadav said it was unprecedented that there was no obituary reference for the seven army personnel including two senior officers killed in terrorist attack at Nagrota armybase near Jammu yesterday.

As he also raised death of "nearly 90 persons" in post-demonetisation hardships, Jaitley retorted that he should first discuss demonetisation within his party and find "if it is agreeable" with the ban on 500 and 1000 rupee notes or not. His remark was apparent reference to JD(U) chief and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar supporting demonetisation.

"We are not against demonetisation. We are against the restrictions that have been placed (on withdrawals from own accounts)," Yadav shot back.

The JD(U) leader then went on to ask if Prime Minister Narendra Modi was with him or not. "Is your Prime Minister with you? Is he listening to you," he asked

10:40   Nagrota to rule Opposition attack in Parliament today
Opposition to raise Nagrota Attack issue in both the Houses (Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha) today.

Two Army officers and five soldiers lost their lives in a major terrorist attack on Tuesday at an army base near Jammu in the town of Nagrota, just 20 kilometres from the border with Pakistan.

A senior Army officer said that heavily-armed terrorists in police uniform stormed the 166 artillery unit before daybreak with guns and grenades and forced their way in.

An army spokesperson said the terrorists forced their entry into the Officers Mess complex by throwing grenades and firing at sentries. In the initial counter action, one officer and three soldiers were martyred.

The terrorists then entered two buildings housing officers and their families, leading to a "hostage-like situation".

"The situation was very quickly contained and thereafter, in a deliberate operation all were successfully rescued, which included 12 soldiers, two ladies and two children," the statement said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was briefed by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on the deadly attack.

Earlier, army chief General Dalbir Singh Suhag briefed Parrikar about the attack.

The ministry is also likely to seek a formal report from the army about the assault which came just two months after the deadly Uri terror strike.

Sources said the prime minister was briefed in Tuesday morning and again after the operation was over.

10:30   Heavy fog engulfs Delhi, 18 flights, 50 trains delayed
Heavy fog engulfed the national capital today -- the first this season -- delaying 18 flights and 50 north-bound trains. Five of the flights were diverted due to poor visibility at the Indira Gandhi International Airport where low visibility procedures were implemented.

"More than 18 flights were delayed due to the sharp drop in runway visibility, forcing the airport authorities to switch to operations under LVP," officials said. The visibility was recorded at 800 metres at 5:30 am, which dropped to 200 metres three hours later. The relative humidity was recorded at 98 per cent.

"This is the season's first fog cover...the skies are expected to remain clear during the day and the maximum temperature is expected to hover around 28 degrees Celsius," the official said. The minimum temperature was recorded at 11 degrees Celsius, a notch above the season's average.

According to railway officials, 50 Delhi-bound services from Patna, Ranchi, Howrah, Bhubaneswar and other places were affected due to the thick fog cover. "The trains were running late between one to three hours," an official said.

10:24   Rupee gains 9 paise against dollar in early trade
The rupee firmed up 9 paise to 68.56 against the dollar in early trade today, rising for the second straight day on increased selling of the US currency by exporters and banks.

Forex dealers said a higher opening in the domestic equity market and expectations of encouraging GDP data to be released later in the day, also supported the rupee.

However, the dollars strength against some currencies overseas following stronger-than-expected third-quarter US growth data, higher housing prices in September and a sharp rebound in consumer confidence in November capped the gains.

The rupee had staged a modest recovery from its fresh 2016 low by gaining 11 paise against the US greenback to end at 68.65 in yesterdays trade.
Meanwhile, the benchmark BSE Sensex rose 90.06 points, or 0.34 per cent, to 26,484.07 in early trade today.

10:07   Talk less, act more, Tharoor tells Modi on terror attacks
Asserting that the escalations along the border are rising especially after the Nagrota terror attack where seven soldiers lost their lives, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take tangible action instead of making speeches about taking action against terrorists.

"I want my government to talk less and act more. We are tired of hearing from our Prime Minster, Defence Minister about their possible retaliations, but despite that soldiers are dying. If you want to retort, then do it by taking any concrete and tangible action, not by talking," Tharoor told media.

Yesterday, two Indian Army officers and five soldiers were killed in the attack, where a group of heavily armed terrorists disguised in police uniforms targeted an army unit located three kilometers from the corps headquarters.

The terrorists forced their entry into the officers mess complex by throwing grenades and firing at the sentries, the army said in a statement.

This led to a hostage like situation, but it was quickly contained, and thereafter, in a deliberate operation, all were successfully rescued, which included 12 soldiers, two ladies and two children.

Defence PRO Manish Mehta said that combing operations have been called off for now and would resume at the crack of dawn on Wednesday.

09:53   Bank out of cash, daily wager waits to cremate wife
On Tuesday afternoon, 65-year-old Munni Lal, a daily wage worker, sat next to his wife's body under a makeshift plastic tent at a JJ cluster in Noida, lighting incense sticks and waiting for his sons. Around 2 pm on Monday, his wife, 61-year-old Phoolmati Devi, had died at a hospital in Noida, a few months after being diagnosed with stomach cancer.

"At 9 am, I took her to Dharamshila Hospital, which referred us to another private hospital. We took an auto and went there. She passed away at 2 pm. We had to pay Rs 600-700 in cash for things such as syringes, food and medicines," said Lal.

When Lal returned to his one-room home in Sector 9 on Monday evening, he did not have cash to pay for his wife's last rites. So he went to the Bank of India branch in Sector 9, where his 30-year-old son has an account.

"The manager told me the branch does not have any money. I told them about my situation but no one listened," Lal said.

Eventually, at 3 pm on Tuesday, Lal said he received Rs 2,500 from a police officer, while a politician gave him Rs 5,000. "My wife would not want us to use borrowed money for her cremation. The district administration eventually gave money to the bank, after which we withdrew Rs 15,000 from my son's account. We will perform her last rites tomorrow morning," Lal said.

09:22   In battle of attrition, Army losing many of its men
With the latest incident, 89 personnel, including several officers, have been killed in action in Jammu and Kashmir this year.

The dramatic increase in number of casualties among security force personnel in Kashmir is deeply worrying many in the security establishment.

On Tuesday, at least seven Army personnel were killed and many, including BSF personnel, were injured in two terrorist attacks.

Informed sources said the high attrition rate particularly of officers in the Army, the worlds highest, can be detrimental in war. If the company commanders and the second-in-commands get killed in the first wave, there will be no one else to lead or fight during actual war, one source said.

08:53   Withdrawals from Jan Dhan accounts capped at Rs 10,000/month
The Reserve Bank of India has announced that cash withdrawals from Jan Dhan accounts will be capped at Rs 10,000 per month.

The move comes following reports that these accounts have been misused by black money holders post-demonetisation. In just 14 days -- between November 10 and 23 -- Rs 27,197 crore was added to these accounts, which was more than 60 per cent of the inflows during the previous 770 days.

The government had earlier announced that small deposits made in the banks by artisans, workers, housewives, etc, would not be questioned, up to an exemption limit of Rs 2.5 lakh.

However, there wont be a blanket waiver from scrutiny for below R2.5 lakh deposits, sources said, given the spurt in Jan Dhan funds.

08:11   Nagrota camp: Intelligence warned of attack 10 days ago
Intelligence services had been monitoring at least one Lashkar-e-Taiba cell in the Valley which had been plotting an attack on the XVI Corps headquarters in Nagrota for at least two weeks before the Tuesday attack that claimed the lives of seven Army personnel, highly placed government sources have said.

The intelligence services last warned of an imminent strike on a high-value military target in Jammu just 10 days ago, the sources said.

Though the Valley-based cell was not involved in Tuesdays attack, officials familiar with the intelligence said, the existence of the warning has raised questions on how the attackers succeeded in traversing the route to Nagrota, and what additional security measures were put in place at sensitive installations.

00:44   Trump suggests 'consequences' for any flag-burners
President-elect Donald Trump said  that anyone who burns an American flag should face unspecified "consequences," such as jail or a loss of citizenship, a move that was ruled out by the Supreme Court nearly three decades ago.

Trump took to Twitter, stating, "Nobody should be allowed to burn the American flag, if they do, there must be consequences, perhaps loss of citizenship or year in jail!"

It was not immediately clear what prompted the tweet. The president-elect's tweet is a direct conflict with free speech rights guaranteed by the First Amendment to the Constitution.

It came as he prepared to name a secretary of state and transportation secretary.

The Supreme Court ruled in 1989 that flag-burning is "expressive conduct" protected by the First Amendment.
