US naval base in Japan on lockdown over possible gunshots

Personnel at the US Naval Base in Sasebo, Japan were asked to shelter in place this morning after reports of an active shooter.

Security at US Fleet Activities Sasebo received a report of gunshots heard inside a building, according to the post, at 9:33 am local time (6:03 am IST) on Thursday. The building was evacuated and security is clearing the building, according to the post.

Cmdr Ron Flanders of Navy Region Japan told Stars and Stripes, "There was possible sounds of shots fired. The base was put on lockdown, and we have asked everyone to shelter in place."

Security forces are clearing the building, said Flanders, who emphasized that an active shooter has not yet been confirmed.
