Is the railway being corporatised?

The Narendra Modi government on Friday sprang a surprise by giving a two-year extension to AK Mital, the chairman of the railway board. He is superannuating this month end. This is for the first time the incumbent has gotten a two-year extension to continue as the highest official of the railway. 

Sources say that the process of corporatisation of the railways is taking place slowly.


The rail budget will be dispensed with. The govt has plans to create 20 public sector undertakings under the Railway Board. An apex body which will work as a regulator is also envisaged.
