23:21   Pope makes historic visit to Auschwitz concentration camp
Pope Francis made a historic visit Friday to Auschwitz-Birkenau, the notorious former German Nazi concentration camp in Poland, to pay tribute to the more than 1 million people, mostly Jews, who lost their lives there in the Holocaust.

The Pope arrived early Friday for his first trip to Auschwitz and sat alone for some time by a tree in solemn reflection. He was surrounded by piles of rubble -- destroyed gas chambers once used to put Jews to death during World War II.

Francis is the third Pope to visit the site of wartime torture and killings, and the trip comes after he made a stern warning this week that "the world is at war."

21:39   PM Modi meets top ministers at 7 RCR over GST
Prime Minister Narendra Modi tonight met top ministers at 7 RCR over GST

Earlier in the day, the government had listed the much-awaited GST bill for consideration and passage in Rajya Sabhas agenda for the next week.

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, while making a statement regarding government business for the week starting August 1 in the Upper House, said the Constitution (122nd Amendement) Bill, 2014 will be taken up for consideration and passage.

On July 27, the Cabinet had cleared changes in the legislation, dropping the controversial one per cent manufacturing tax and providing guarantee to compensate states for any revenue loss in the first five years of rollout of the ambitious indirect tax regime.

The government is keen to get the GST Bill approved during the Monsoon Session of Parliament ending on August 12.

The bill was passed by the Lok Sabha in May 2015 and vetted by the Rajya Sabha Select Committee.

21:20   Trump says he wants to 'hit' Democrats who mocked him
Never one to pull his punches, a combative Donald Trump on Friday said he wanted to "hit" several Democrats who spoke against him "so hard, their heads would spin".
The Republican presidential nominee often uses the term "hit" to mean verbally attack, rather than physical contact.
After hearing speeches at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia this week, Trump said he wanted to "hit a number of those speakers so hard, their heads would spin. They'd never recover".
The real estate tycoon zoomed in on one speaker especially, though he didn't mention his name, CNN reported.
"I was going to hit one guy in particular, a very little guy," Trump said to laughs at a campaign rally in Iowa.
"I was going to hit this guy so hard his head would spin, he wouldn't know what the hell happened," he reiterated.
Trump said this individual "came out of nowhere" and had done work with him in the past. "He made deals with me. 'Will you help me with this? Would you make this deal and solve the problem?' I solved the problem," Trump said.
Several speakers this week have gone after Trump including Michael Bloomberg. The former New York City mayor made a surprise endorsement over the weekend for Hillary Clinton, and described Trump in his convention speech last night as a "dangerous demagogue."
Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Kaine also targeted Trump, mocking the businessman's tendency to bolster his promises with a plea of "believe me."
"He said a lot of things about me, I never met the guy," Trump said. "I mean the things that were said about me. I mean, should I go through some of the names?"
Trump recalled telling a friend this week that he wanted to retaliate against the people who slammed him at the convention, mentioning current New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio by name.
"I was going to say that de Blasio is the worst mayor in the history of the city, but I didn't say it," Trump said to laughs. "He's a terrible mayor. I was going to say that, but now I won't say it."

21:18   Florida confirms 4 cases of likely locally-transmitted Zika
Florida's governor on Friday reported the first evidence of local Zika virus transmission in the continental United States, saying testing of four residents showed they were likely infected by mosquito bites.

Governor Rick Scott said the state believed active transmission of the virus was occurring in a small area of the populous Miami-Dade county. One case involved a woman and the other three involved men, Scott said.

While health officials have yet to identify mosquitoes carrying the virus, the state has ruled out other means of transmission, including travel to another country with a Zika outbreak, and sexual contact.

20:53   'No record of Netaji's stay in Russia'
There was no record of stay of Subhash Chandra Bose in Soviet Union in 1945 and thereafter, according to a new set of 25 declassified files on Netaji released in New Delhi on Friday.
This revelation challenges a belief that Bose had fled to Russia and was not killed in an air carsh in 1945 in Taipei.
In a letter, dated January 8, 1992, to Indian Embassy in Moscow, the Foreign Affairs Ministry of Russian Federation has said, "...according to the data in the Central and Republican archives, no information whatsoever is available on the stay of the former President of Indian National Congress Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose in the Soviet Union in 1945 and thereafter."
The disappearance of Netaji 70 years ago remains a mystery with two Commissions of Inquiry concluding that Netaji had died in a plane crash in Taipei on August 18, 1945 while a third probe panel, headed by Justice M K Mukherjee, had contested it and suggested that Bose was alive.
Culture Secretary N K Sinha released online the sixth batch of 25 declassified files related to Netaji.
The present batch of 25 files pertains to ministry of external affairs during 1952-2014.
The first lot of 100 files relating to Netaji were put in public domain by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 23 on the occasion of the 119th birth anniversary of Netaji.
The second lot of 50 files was released in March and 25 files each were put in public domain in the subsequent months.

20:16   Austria hands over Paris attacks 'accomplices' to France
Austria has handed over to France two suspected members of the same Islamic State cell that massacred 130 people in Paris last November, prosecutors said today.
The Algerian and Pakistani men, now aged 29 and 35 and who have not been named, were arrested in Austria on December 10.
Austrian and French authorities believe they travelled to Greece along with two men involved in the November 13 atrocities, posing as refugees.
While the eventual assailants continued on to France, the two were detained by Greek authorities for 25 days because they had falsified Syrian passports.
Once let go, they made it to Salzburg at the end of November -- after the Paris atrocities -- and Austrian police arrested them at a migrant centre.
Following a French request, a court in Salzburg in western Austria approved at the beginning of July their transfer to France.
"Both suspects have now left the country," prosecutors said in a statement today.
They had said in April that they were looking into "leads" suggesting that the Pakistani may have been involved in attacks in 2008 in Mumbai that killed 166 people.

19:51   Govt not in favour of abolishing death penalty: Kiren Rijiju
The government on Friday said in Rajya Sabha that it is "not in favour" of abolishing the capital punishment considering the "prevailing circumstances" in the country.

"The prevailing circumstances in which we are living does not warrant abolition of death penalty," Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju said while replying to a private member's resolution moved by Communist Party of India's D Raja for the abolition of capital punishment in the country.

India has its own basis of formulating laws and it has to respect the "sentiments of the people", Rijiju added.

He said there are several provisions in the Constitution such as Articles 71, 134 and 161 for commuting of death sentence and the Supreme Court has made it clear that it should be used in "exceptional circumstances" and as an "unavoidable alternative".

Enumerating the remedies available regarding death sentence, he said even if capital punishment has been awarded by a lower court and has been upheld by the high court, the person can approach the Supreme Court.

"Even if that fails, one can approach the governor and the President of India," the minister added.

On awarding of the death sentence, he said several factors such as the accused's socio-economic condition, health, age and sex are considered before awarding such a sentence.

Referring to recommendation made by the Law Commission, Rijiju said it suggested abolishing death sentence except for terrorism and for waging war.

The minister, as well as Deputy Chairman P J Kurien, suggested to Raja to withdraw his resolution, but he did not agree saying he has taken up the issue as a "mission and a missionary zeal".

19:22   Gurugram has turned into Guru-jam, AAP mocks Khattar
The Aam Aadmi Party today mocked Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar saying he has turned "Gurugram into Guru-jam", a day after the BJP leader accused Arvind Kejriwal of "non-cooperation" in decongesting Gurgaon.During a live Twitter session with Khattar yesterday, one person had questioned the delay in completion of the Northern Peripheral Road (NPR) project also known as the Dwarka Expressway, suggesting it would "decongest most of Gurugram traffic". Khattar responded saying: "Mr. @ArvindKejriwal should be asked this. Frustrated by non-cooperation by Delhi Govt, we have got it declared as NH." Asked about the allegation, AAP spokesperson Ashtuosh dismissed it as "hilarious" saying the people of Haryana wanted a Chief Minister "but got a Khattar" instead. "When you make Khattar as CM this is what you get. He has turned Gurugram into Gurujam," Ashutosh said. Although Kejriwal did not react to Khattar's allegation directly, he put out a tweet "That's BJP's governance", referring to a user's lament about the waterlogging situation in the Millennium city.

16:48   Kejriwal is a 'frustrated' man: Badal
On a day Arvind Kejriwal attacked Punjab's ruling Akali Dal on the drug issue, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today hit back saying the Delhi chief minister was a "frustrated man" unaware of the dignity of his chair. Badal said it doesn't behove of a chief minister to issue statements as given by Kejriwal against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and even against the Akali leadership. Interacting with the mediapersons on the sidelines of his 'Sangat Darshan' programme in Bhadaur assembly segment here, he said the irrational and baseless allegations levelled by Kejriwal - without any proof - reflect his hollow personality.

"Throughout my life I have been a votary of morality and I firmly believe that Kejriwal must desist from issuing such statements just for sake of scoring brownie points," he said.

Kejriwal, AAP's national convenor, earlier today attacked the Punjab government after getting bail in a defamation case filed by the state Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majithia. Renewing his allegations against Majithia, brother-in-law of SAD chief and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, Kejriwal said Punjab was in a "bad state" due to the drug issue. Badal claimed that due to its pro-people policies the SAD-BJP alliance would return to power in the state.

16:04   Rockstar Rahul sounds poll bugle in UP, sings 'suit-boot' tune again
Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi sounded the poll bugle in Uttar Pradesh today, walking up and down a 200-metre ramp in Ramabai Stadium in Lucknow addressing party workers. The move, say reports is to present himself as a rockstar much as the PM does during his visits abroad, while addressing the India diaspora.

Highlights of what the Congress veep said.

-- 27 saal UP behaal, anek parties UP ko todne main lagi hain. Hum chahate hain ki UP fir pehle no pe jaaye, aur hum leke jaaenge.

-- We made Sheila Dikshit-ji the CM candidate of UP because we want her to fight for women.

-- Earlier Modi-ji snatched farmers' lands, now it's dal from your plates.

-- Modi-ji promised bullet trains, tickets will be not less than Rs 15000.
Only Modi-ji and his suited booted friends will travel in it.

-- If the Congress Party stands together, if we fight for our ideology and give voice to the workers then no Party can defeat us.

15:40   Journalism is about being a monkey balancer: Rajdeep
"A website rang me up last evening asking if I would like to express an opinion on the ongoing 'war' between Arnab Goswami and Barkha Dutt on tv and social media. I was tempted, if only because I have a strong opinion on most things and believe silence is not an option in the unethical times we live in. And yet, I pressed the pause button and decided I didn't wish to speak on the issue and aggravate the controversy. Maybe, I was influenced by the fact that both Barkha and Arnab have been former colleagues and I have respected their work. Maybe, having been bitten in the past, I didn't want to join the viper's den which platforms like Twitter have been reduced to: 24 X 7 rage machines where every attempt is made to throw darts at public figures, often under the guise of anonymity. Maybe, I just like to see myself as a nice guy who doesn't wish to see more unpleasantness around him."

15:22   Gurdip's wife appeals for his safe return
The wife of Indian national Gurdip Singh, who was to be executed over drug charges last night in Indonesia today said that she spoke to him twice this morning and he has been sent back to jail.

Appealing the Indonesian government for mercy to Singh, his wife Kulwinder Kaur said he has spent 14 years in jail which was enough penance for his crime if he was guilty and he should be sent back to his country.

"I spoke to him twice this morning and he said he is fine. His execution was dropped at the last minute after four others were put to death by the firing squad," Kaur said.

External Affair Minister Sushma Swaraj said this morning that 48-year-old Singh had not been executed. However, it was not clear under what circumstance the Indian who was to be executed along with 14 other convicts was spared. Four of them were put to death by the firing squad last night. 48-year-old Singh was among 10 convicts who were not put to death.

He was found guilty by an Indonesian court of trying to smuggle in 300 grams of heroin and was handed death penalty in 2005. "A priest was invited and a van had also arrived to carry his body but the execution was halted at the last minute. He was then sent back to the prison," she said.

"Gurdip asked me to appeal to the government to halt the execution and bring him back to the country. He wants to meet his family," Kaur said. Expressing gratitude to the central government for its efforts, she said

"Swaraj has been constantly in touch with me and has assured me that the government is trying everything to save Gurdip from execution." Singh, who hails from Jalandhar in Punjab, is among 14 people who were facing execution after the authorities decided to resume implementing death penalty.

The 14 convicts included persons from Indonesia, Nigeria, Zimbabwe and Pakistan. Singh was arrested on August 29, 2004, at the Soekarno Hatta Airport on charges of drug trafficking. The Tangerang Court awarded him capital punishment in February 2005, against the prosecutors' request for 20 years imprisonment. His appeal against the death penalty was turned down by the High Court of Banten in May, 2005. He then appealed to the Supreme Court which also upheld his death penalty. He is presently detained at Nusakambangan Pasir Putih, Cilacap.

14:06   Sena-MNS bhai bhai? Closed-door meet between Uddhav-Raj raises speculation
MNS chief Raj Thackeray on Friday met his estranged cousin and Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray at the latter's home sparking speculation of possible reapproachement for the crucial civic polls in the city due early in 2016. Raj, who lives in Dadar, drove to Matoshree, Uddhav's residence in suburban Bandra.

No aides were present at the meeting, Sena sources said.

In 2012, after Uddhav underwent an angiography (to unblock blood vessels), he was driven home by Raj, giving rise to speculation of a 'thaw' between the two. Uddhav was admitted to Lilavati Hospital in Bandra after he complained of chest pain. On hearing the news, Raj, who was on way to Alibaug to attend a party meet, had rushed to the hospital.

The BMC polls are crucial for the two cousins who regularly take potshots at each other. Shiv Sena plays a second fiddle to ally BJP in the state ministry and it is trying hard to retain its rule over the BMC where BJP plays the second fiddle. Uddhav, who turned 56 years old recently, has beenhandling the party affairs since 2004. In 2005, Raj had quit Shiv Sena and formed a new political outfit, MNS, the next year, blaming Uddhav and his 'coterie' for the ills afflicting his uncle Bal Thackeray's party.

13:52   Why I can no longer laugh at Arnab Goswami
When does a joke stop being funny?Arnab Goswami has always been something of a joke. For Anglophone India, its highest-rated newsman has always been entertainment -- less a real person, more a parcel of self-righteous hot air trapped inside an awful suit. When he comes up in conversation, we roll our eyes.

"Too much shouting,' we say smugly, or "too many guests'. We speculate on whether he gets tired of playing the part of a sanctimonious scold, and make jokes about the "voice of the Nation". Sure, he's powerful -- but he's also a joke.At some point in the recent past, the joke stopped being amusing. Read more

Incessant overnight rain turned Bengaluru's formidable traffic jams into a a mirror image of Gurugram. Roads near Electronics City, which houses Infosys and thousands of IT workers, were waterlogged with rafts out on the streets to evacuate people.

Heavy rains began on July 26 and continue till date only increasing in intensity. During the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Thursday, Bangalore recorded a whopping 41.8 mm of rain. 09:53   Indian convict Gurdip Singh spared for now as Indonesia executes 4
Indian convict Gurdip Singh was spared when Indonesia executed four including three foreigners for drug crimes on Friday.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj tweeted: "Indian Ambassador in Indonesia has informed me that Gurdip Singh whose execution was fixed for last night, has not been executed."

Indonesian officials did not give a reason for the reprieve but said 10 more convicts would be executed at a later stage. The prison island where they were expected to be executed in outdoor clearings was hit by a major storm as the other sentences were carried out.

Duped by an agent into paying for what he believed was a work visa in New Zealand, Gurdip Singh, 48, was allegedly abandoned mid-journey in Indonesia. He was convicted of smuggling drugs in 2004.

Swaraj had phoned his family in Punjab yesterday to reassure them that she is doing her best to save him.

09:21   Hillary jabs at Trump: 'Man you can bait with a tweet is not a man we can trust with nukes'
Hillary then slams her Republican rival Donald Trump.

She says:

"A man you can bait with a tweet is not a man we can trust with nuclear weapons."

"For the past year, many people made the mistake of laughing off Donald Trump's comments -- excusing him as an entertainer just putting on a show. They think he could not possibly mean all the horrible things he says -- like when he called women "pigs". Or said that an American judge could not be fair because of his Mexican heritage. Or when he mocks and mimics a reporter with a disability. At first, I admit, I could not believe he meant it either.

"It was just too hard to fathom -- that someone who wants to lead our nation could say those things. Could be like that. But here's the sad truth: There is no other Donald Trump... This is it.

And in the end, it comes down to what Donald Trump doesnt get: that America is great because America is good. So enough with the bigotry and bombast. Donald Trump's not offering real change. He's offering empty promises."

08:43   Hillary: Our democracy is not working the way it should
Hillary continues: "I do not think President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden get the credit they deserve for saving us from the worst economic crisis of our lifetimes.

"Our economy is so much stronger than when they took office. Nearly 15 million new private-sector jobs. Twenty million more Americans with health insurance. And an auto industry that just had its best year ever. Thats real progress.

"But none of us can be satisfied with the status quo. Not by a long shot. We are still facing deep-seated problems that developed long before the recession and have stayed with us through the recovery. I have gone around our country talking to working families. And I have heard from so many of you who feel like the economy just is not working.

"Some of you are frustrated -- even furious. And you know what??? You are right. It is not yet working the way it should. I believe that our economy is not working the way it should because our democracy is not working the way it should."

08:35   Hillary's jab at Trump: Nobody in my family had their name on big buildings
The entire Democratic convention erupts in cheer as Hillary makes her acceptance speech.

After minutes of clapping and rejoicing, Hillary continues:

"Now, sometimes the people at this podium are new to the national stage. As you know, I am not one of those people. I have been your First Lady. Served 8 years as a Senator from the great State of New York. I ran for President and lost. Then I represented all of you as Secretary of State.

"But my job titles only tell you what I have done. They do not tell you why. The truth is, through all these years of public service, the 'service' part has always come easier to me than the 'public' part. I get it that some people just do not know what to make of me."

"The family I am from... well, no one had their name on big buildings. My family were builders of a different kind. Builders in the way most American families are. They used whatever tools they had -- whatever God gave them -- and whatever life in America provided -- and built better lives and better futures for their kids."

"To all of your supporters here and around the country: I want you to know, I've heard you. Your cause is our cause. Our country needs your ideas, energy, and passion."

"That's the only way we can turn our progressive platform into real change for America," she said. "We wrote it together -- now let's go out there and make it happen together."

"It is with humility, determination & boundless confidence in America's promise that I accept your nomination"

08:12   Public sector bank employees on strike today; banking operations to take a hit
Normal banking operations are set to take a hit today as public sector bank employees went on strike to protest against proposed merger of associate banks with SBI and banking reforms announced by the government.

The United Forum of Banks Unions (UFBU), an umbrella organisation of nine bank employees and officers unions representing 8 lakh staffers, will go ahead with the strike, potentially affecting services like cheque clearances, cash deposit and withdrawal at branches and other facilities.

Most banks, including SBI, informed customers that banking services would be hit on July 29 due to the strike at all banks on "issue and demand to stop banking sector reforms".

"The All India State Bank Officers' Federation and the All India State Bank of India Staff Federation are members of UFBU. Thus, it is likely that the bank will also be impacted to some extent by the said strike calls," SBI said in a statement.

02:11   Boy raises $20,000 for children's hospital
There are a lot of ways a 10-year-old boy might spend $500. But when Blake Kroll auctioned off his pig for $500 at the county fair, he donated his earnings to Children's Hospital of Wisconsin.

It didn't stop there.

Kroll's mother, Kim, told CNN that when others saw her son's generous donation they raised their paddles at auction to chip in as well. First, one person offered to cover the $500 that Blake was donating.

Then, Kim said, "it was like a chain reaction. It's phenomenal because we are small community. Everyone knows everybody."

Within minutes, 31 businesses had donated thousands of dollars.

After the auction ended, people kept mailing checks and cash donations to the Kroll family, who live in Kewaunee County north of Milwaukee. The amount soon reached $20,000.

Shiite rebels and their allies formed a 10-member "supreme council" to run Yemen, in what the government described as a blow to the already stalled UN-brokered peace talks.

It did not name the council's members.

"The aim is to unify efforts to confront the aggression by Saudi Arabia and its allies," the statement said in reference to the Riyadh-led Arab coalition that launched a military campaign against the rebels in March last year in support of President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi.
The job of the council will be to "manage state affairs politically, militarily, economically, administratively, socially and in security".
