French passenger detained in Chennai for possessing satellite phone

A 69-year-old French air passenger was detained for interrogation today after he was allegedly found in possession of a satellite phone, Central Industrial Security Force officials said.

CISF personnel found the passenger carrying the satellite phone in his hand baggage during a check at the airport here. He was immediately detained for inquiry, they said. Possession of satellite phone by foreign nationals is highly regulated, and allowed subject to strict norms.

The possession of the device must be declared on arrival in the country in the stipulated form and manner to Customs authorities.
