"Not many of you may recognise but there is one contribution of your ancestors that you should be proud of your ancestors were the first day to leave the shores of India to prevent their culture and language," PM Modi told the expat Indians in the audience.

"It is here that Mahatma Gandhi conceptualised his politics, this is the birth place of Satyagraha," he said.

"South Africa transformed Mohandas into Mahatma," he added.

"I salute you all and countless others dedicated to this country. You are the proud sons and daughters of Indian heritage," PM said.
