The driver who hit an Indian Air Force officer with his Audi car in Kolkata on Wednesday and then ran away is the son of a leader of the ruling Trinamool Congress, sources have said.

The police traced the Audi Q7 abandoned at the accident site to the Ambiya Sohrab, the 26-year-old son of Trinamool leader Mohammad Sohrab, sources said.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has ordered murder charges, but the Sohrabs are missing since Wednesday, the police say.

Corporal Abhimanyu Gaud, 30, was supervising a practice parade at Red Road when he was knocked off his feet by the car. He died soon after.

After hitting the officer, the car rammed a barricade before coming to a stop. The driver left the car and ran away.
