23:34   UP govt revokes decision; men with two wives can be recruited as Urdu teachers
In the wake of objections by a Muslim body, Uttar Pradesh government tonight revoked its decision to bar men having two or move wives from appointment as Urdu teachers.
The state government said the appointments would be made as per the rules and regulation in the past and there will be no change.
"While signing the government order today I saw that there is no such clause in it and therefore we have issued a clarification in this regard," Minister for Basic Education Ahmed Hasan told PTI.

"We are not able to understand how such a thing has surfaced ..it is a wrong propaganda against the government," Hasan claimed.

22:58   Paris bomber left Belgium for Syria in 2013: prosecutors
A Belgian-Moroccan man who blew himself up during a police raid days after the Paris attacks had travelled in 2013 to Syria where he joined the Islamic State group, Belgian prosecutors said today.

Chakib Akrouh, a suspected gunman in the Paris attacks whose identity was released in Paris yesterday, used a one-way ticket to fly from Brussels to Istanbul on January 4, 2013, the federal prosecutor's office said.

"The investigation then indicated his presence in Syria from January 2013 when he joined the ranks of the Katibat al-Muhajereen, then the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant," it said in a statement, using another name for the Islamic State.

Paris prosecutor Francois Molins said yesterday that Akrouh, a 25-year-old Belgian-Moroccan dual national who was born in Belgium, was identified from DNA matched to his mother.

22:50   Eight more civilians killed in 2015 anti-IS strikes: US
Eight civilians were killed and three others injured in a series of US air strikes carried out from April to July last year against Islamic State targets in Iraq and Syria, the US military said today.

US Central Command, which oversees operations in the Middle East, said the deaths came during three strikes in Syria and two in Iraq, bringing to 12 the total number of civilians the US-led coalition has acknowledged killing in the two countries in 2015.
"We deeply regret the unintentional loss of life and injuries resulting from those air strikes," CENTCOM said in a statement revealing the results of their investigations.

Two of the victims died April 12 near Hawijah in Iraq during a strike on an IS "tactical unit," CENTCOM said, and three others were killed in another strike near Suluk in Syria on June 11.

21:48   British mother takes her 14-month-old baby to join Islamic State
A British mother who is accused of taking her 14-month-old baby to Syria to join the Islamic State terrorist group has gone on trial in the United Kingdom.

Tareena Shakil, 26, told her family she was leaving for a holiday in Turkey in October 2014 but instead travelled to the city of Raqqa, the de facto capital of IS in northern Syria, Birmingham Crown Court was told this week.

She is believed to be the first British woman to return from the IS heartland to face terror charges.

"Although she booked a return flight, she was not going to come back, and this was no spur-of-the-moment decision," prosecutor Sean Larkin told the jury.

"She was given a house to live in. She was provided for. She was given access to firearms, and there were images of her child wearing clothing with the IS logo and posing by a firearm," he said.

Shakil was arrested by British police at Heathrow airport in February last year after arriving on a flight from Turkey.

She told officers she was kidnapped and taken to Syria but had managed to escape. The prosecution believes that was a lie.

In a message to her father, who was back in the UK, she allegedly wrote: 'I can leave, but I don't want (to). I want to die here as a martyr.'

She also told her family: 'If you don't love ISIS I don't want to talk to you anymore.'

Her defence lawyer, Timothy Moloney, told the court: "Her marriage had ultimately broken down and she accessed websites about life in Syria. The issue is whether she intended to encourage terrorist acts or was reckless. Her case is that she did not and was not reckless. The second issue is whether she became a member of IS and her case is that she did not." Shakil's trial is expected to last three weeks.

20:47   Pak rejects Obama's 'safe heaven for terrorists' remarks
Pakistan today rejected United States President Barack Obama's remarks that the country could become a safe haven for terrorists and would continue to face instability for decades to come.

In his last State of the Union address on Tuesday, Obama said 'instability will continue for decades in many parts of the world -- in the Middle East, in Afghanistan and Pakistan, in parts of central America, Africa and Asia'.   Obama has said the US' foreign policy must be focused on the threat from Islamic State and al-Qaeda, but it can't stop there.

"For even without the IS, instability will continue for decades in many parts of the world -- in the Middle East, in Afghanistan and Pakistan, in parts of Central America, Africa and Asia," he has said.

"Some of these places may become safe havens for new terrorist networks; others will fall victim to ethnic conflict, or famine, feeding the next wave of refugees," he said.

Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's adviser on foreign affairs Sartaj Aziz rejected Obama's comments in a breakfast meeting with Chinese scholars, diplomats and mediapersons.

"Whatever the US president said about instability in Pakistan and Afghanistan is his prediction and has nothing to do with ground realities," Aziz said.

He said Pakistan was committed to defeating militancy and had major successes in the fight to eliminate terrorism.

"Pakistan is taking decisive action against terrorism and militancy and days to come will witness more stability here," he said.

Aziz said Afghanistan faced the issue of 'instability' but Pakistan was putting in all efforts to bring peace and stability in its neighbouring nation.

19:48   New Juvenile Justice Act comes into force today
Juveniles aged 16 to 18 years would now be tried as adults in cases of heinous crimes like rape and murder with a new law in this regard coming into force from today.

The Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Bill was passed by Rajya Sabha in the Winter Session and signed by the President into Act on January 4.

Under the Act, those aged between 16 and 18 years will cease to get protection under the juvenile law and will be tried as adults if they commit heinous crimes.

Under the juvenile law till now, even those accused of heinous offences like rape could be tried only by Juvenile Justice Boards and, if found guilty, sent to correctional homes for not more than three years.

The new Act allows the Juvenile Justice Board to conduct a preliminary inquiry to find out whether the juvenile is indeed guilty of a heinous offence.

The JJB has been given the option to transfer cases of heinous offences by such children to a Children's Court (Court of Session) after conducting preliminary assessment.

19:47   SC fiat to Centre on Prisoners of War
Supreme Court today had a word of caution for the government that any deviation from its stand that the issue of Indian Prisoners of War (POWs) languishing in Pakistani prisons cannot be taken to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), will have its own ramifications.

"Government of India's stand has been that the issue cannot go to the ICJ. Can it change the stand now? It will have its own ramifications," a bench comprising Chief Justice T S Thakur and R Bhanumathi observed.

The remarks came after the bench wanted to know from government's counsel R Balasubramanian whether the ICJ has any jurisdiction to go into the issue.

He said the Centre has taken a stand that ICJ has no jurisdiction on the issue. The bench was told that in the past Pakistan had taken some of the issues to ICJ.

The bench was hearing a batch of petitions raising the issues of POWs, the brutality meted out to Saurav Kalia during Kargil War and the beheading and mutilation of bodies of two Indian soldiers in 2013 by Pakistani army, for a direction to the union government to move the ICJ.

The Supreme Court today said it will await the government's stand in its endeavour to examine a plea to legalise passive euthanasia by means of withdrawal of life support system to terminally-ill patients.

"Is the government making its stand clear in a reasonable time," a five-judge Constitution Bench, headed by Justice A R Dave, asked Additional Solicitor General P S Patwalia, who sought some time to get instruction from competent authority. The law officer apprised the bench about the 241st report of the Law Commission which has stated that passive euthanasia should be allowed with certain safeguards and there was a proposed law -- Medical Treatment of Terminally Ill Patient (Protection of Patients and Medical Practioners) Bill, 2006.

He said his contention will also be based on 6.7 regulation of 2002 under Medical Council of India Act which says that practicing euthanasia shall constitute unethical conduct.

However on specific occasions, the question of withdrawing supporting devices to sustain cardio-pulmonary function even after brain death, shall be decided only by a doctors' team and not merely by the treating physician alone.

18:09   Shatrughan disagrees with BJP 'jungle raj' barb at Nitish govt
Dismissing BJP's charge of return of 'Jungle Raj' in Bihar over the killing of engineers for extortion in the state, disgruntled party leader Shatrughan Sinha said performance of a government could not be judged in a short period of time.

When asked about BJP and its allies' 'jungle raj' barb on the ruling coalition, the Patna Sahib MP today said it was "no way to judge performance of a government in such a short period of time."

"Even the honeymoon period of the new government in Bihar is not yet over," Sinha said about the JD(U), RJD and Congress alliance government in the state which is less than two months old.

"What is happening in Delhi or for that matter Maharashtra (where BJP-Shiv Sena coalition government is in power)," asked Sinha, who had kept himself off from recent Bihar elections campaign to protest "conspiracy' of a few state leaders against him.

"Negative politics never work. I do not appreciate practice of negative politics," Sinha said.

Earlier, senior BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi and others citing Darbhanga murder of two engineers and a few other cases of crime in Vaishali and elsewhere had raised the slogan of "jungle raj-2'. Union Minister and LJP President Ram Vilas Paswan had also sharpened attack on law and order situation in Bihar.

17:10   Sunanda's death unnatural, no radioactive poisoning, says Delhi police
Sunanda Pushkar, wife of Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, died of poisoning, a long-awaited medical report submitted to the police today has confirmed, said sources.

The report, prepared by top doctors at Delhi's state-run AIIMS hospital, draws from the findings of the FBI, which, last year, was sent viscera samples or samples of Pushkar's organs like the large intestine.

"I can say with certainty that the death was not natural," said Delhi Police chief BS Bassi, adding that the report is being studied by a special team of the Delhi Police set up to investigate Pushkar's death.

He also said that the FBI has ruled out the possibility of radioactive poisoning, as suggested in a post-mortem examination.

Pushkar, 53, was married to former union minister Shashi Tharoor when she was found dead in a luxury hotel in Delhi in January 2014, days after she publicly accused him of having an affair with a Pakistani journalist.

16:13   How not to promote a film, song, or anything
There are ways and ways to promote a film, or any product, and the dictates of our times says that the more shocking the promo, the more the eyeballs, headlines, outrage, clamour for ban, all of which leads back to greater promo.

Many are the brands that have taken this route to reap a rich harvest, never mind what it does to public morality, truth, and other such high-falutin ideals.

Even making extra-wide allowances for this, the mailer put out by a PR agency for the film Sanam Teri Kasams song Tera Chehra (since when did individual songs come to be promoted via mailers!) takes the cake, and the Pongal too.

The subject matter grabs you by the, well, eyeballs all right. Say goodbye to birthday sex, sympathy f*** it is, it jumps at you.

Clutter Communications creative copywriter then goes on to tell us: Guess what! We noticed something that raised our curiosity. The youth are going completely gaga over this new term Sympathy f*** trending strongly across the internet. To the extent that the rapid interest in this craziness has also led to growing discontent amongst certain section of the society. And if you can figure out that statement, we doff our hat to you.

The release doesnt let up, though. What is Sympathy f***? You may ask, it says. Well.. Watch the video of the song Tera Chehra from the movie Sanam Teri Kasam and youll know exactly what were talking about!

Enclosed in the mailer is a link to the video which shows Harshvardhan Rane and Pakistani actress Mawra Hocane no doubt explaining the term to viewers through their histrionics.

And, no, we are deliberately not enclosing the link to the video. If as the PR says everyone is hunting for sympathy f*** on the web, the least you can do is to search for the song.

Sunanda Pushkar's samples were sent to the US for testing after traces of radioactive isotopes were found in her body during the post-mortem examination. 12:38   Sunanda Pushkar death: Medical Board's advice on FBI report reaches police
The Delhi police has received the medical board's 'advice' on the FBI lab report on the viscera samples of Sunanda Pushkar, wife of Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, to identify the cause of her death.

"Have been told that Medical Board's advice in late Sunanda's case has been received," Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi said in a tweet. Bassi added that Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Deepak Mishra was reviewing the progress.

Sunanda was found dead inside her suite at a five-star hotel in New Delhi in January 2014, a day after she was involved in a spat with Pakistani journalist Mehr Tarar on Twitter over the latter's alleged affair with Tharoor, the Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram.

Her viscera samples were sent to the FBI lab in Washington DC in February last year to determine the kind of poison that killed her after an AIIMS medical board identified poisoning as the reason behind her death but did not mention any specific substance.

The FBI report had virtually ruled out the theory of 'polonium poisoning' having caused her death. However, after Delhi police failed to draw any conclusion on basis of the findings, the report was handed over to a medical board for examination before further proceedings in the high-profile case.

The investigators have so far conducted polygraph test on six persons, all prime witnesses in the case, including Tharoors' domestic help Narayan Singh, driver Bajrangi and Sanjay Dewan, a close friend of the couple. Tharoor has been questioned in the case.

12:27   China to land probe on dark side of moon in 2018
China plans to land the first probe ever on the dark side of the moon in 2018, marking another milestone in its ambitious space programme, Xinhua, the official news agency reported.

China has launched a new round of work focused on lunar exploration, coming about two years after it made the first "soft landing" on the moon since 1976 with the Chang'e-3 craft and its Jade Rabbit rover.

Previous spacecraft have seen the far side of the moon, that is never visible from earth, but none has landed on it.

A new probe, the Chang'e-4, is similar to the Chang'e-3 but can carry a bigger payload, Xinhua quoted Liu Jizhong, head of the science, technology and defence industry administration's lunar exploration centre, as saying late on Thursday.

The craft will study geological conditions on the far side of the moon, Liu said.Advancing China's space programme has been a priority of leaders, with President Xi Jinping calling for China to establish itself as a space power.

China insists that its space programme is for peaceful purposes.

Angrily, I was stamping the ground, squashing the Indian soil with my shoes and saying, 'O Babri Masjid, we are ashamed, O Babri Masjid, we are sorry'you were a sign of our glorious past and we will not rest till we restore you to your former glory.''

These lines - translated by intelligence officials from tapes that sold openly in Bahawalpur, his home town in Pakistan's Punjab -- became part of speeches Masood Azhar gave to indoctrinate and motivate the militant cadre.

11:48   Rajnath, Parrikar, BSF chief, home secy meet to discuss border security
Home minister Rajnath Singh, defence minister Manohar Parrikar, home secretary Rajiv Mehrishi and BSF chief Devendra Kumar Pathak meet to discuss strengthening border security in the aftermath of the Pathankot terror attack. The four terrorists who attacked the Pathankot airbase last week spent up to 24 hours resting inside a disused Military Engineer Services shed as they prepared to launch their attack, highly-placed sources in the National Investigation Agency (NIA) told The Indian Express. This raises the prospect that the attackers may have been aided by reconnaissance conducted earlier.

11:28   Preach to your wife about India's prestige: Ram Madhav to Aamir Khan
Denouncing actor Aamir Khan's recent remarks on perceived intolerance in the country, BJP leader Ram Madhav yesterday said the Bollywood superstar should not preach only to an auto-rickshaw driver about India's prestige but also to his wife.

"It will not work that you preach to an auto wallah how the country's prestige has to be saved but not tell the same to your own wife," Madhav said, while addressing students at Delhi University's SGBT Khalsa College.

In November, Aamir, 50, had expressed his concern about intolerance being displayed towards minorities. He was attacked on social media by many as "anti-national" for his remarks. He had said that his wife, Kiran Rao, said she was so concerned about the atmosphere of intolerance that she had wondered out loud about relocating from India.

Political and other opponents have accused the BJP and its supporters of whipping up religious tensions in different parts of the country, an allegation firmly rebutted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his ministers who say parties like the Congress are trying to discredit the central government.

In September, a man in Dadri in Uttar Pradesh was lynched to death after being falsely accused of having beef in his home; rationalist MM Kalburgi was shot dead in Karnataka a few weeks before that.

Meanwhile, Ram Madhav also said that the government will ensure that in future no need arises for 'award-wapasi', and asserted that there will be no compromise on the security of the country's borders and self-respect.

"No one needs to return the awards, everyone will be taken care of but the country should be respected. The individuals should also take care of nation's prestige," Madhav said.

"We are dedicated to the security of the country. We want good relations with our neighbours. But with regard to the security of the country's borders and its self-respect, no compromise will be accepted...we will take care that no need arises to return awards years later," he said.

11:23   Harry, Hermoine pay tribute to beloved professor Snape
The team of "Harry Potter", including the lead cast members Danielle Radcliffe and Emma Watson, has paid heart-touching homage to actor Alan Rickman, most famously known for his role of strict professor Severus Snape in the fantasy film series.

Rickman has died following a battle with cancer. He was 69.

Radcliffe played the young braveheart Harry Potter, who for the most part of the series found Snape against him, only to find in the end that he was his well-wisher in disguise. Remembering the brilliance of Rickman on and off screen, in a long post, Radcliffe tweeted, "Alan Rickman is undoubtedly one of the greatest actors I will ever work with. He is also, one of the loyalest and most supportive people I've ever met in the film industry. He was so encouraging of me both on set and in the years post-Potter.

"I'm pretty sure he came and saw everything I ever did on stage both in London and New York. He didn't have to do that. I know other people who've been friends with him for much much longer than I have and they all say "if you call Alan, it doesn't matter where in the world he is or how busy he is with what he's doing, he'll get back to you within a day."

The 26-year-old star said he liked that the veteran treated him like a colleague not a child on the "Harry Potter" set.

11:14   Kejriwal heads to Bengaluru for naturopathy as odd-even plan ends
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will be on medical leave for about 10 days starting January 22, and will go to Bengaluru for naturopathy treatment for his cough.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia told NDTV that Kejriwal was to have gone on leave from December 22, but rescheduled his plans as he wanted to personally supervise the implementation of the odd-even scheme aimed at cutting through the capital's deadly smog.

The odd-even experiment, which allowed odd numbered cars on the roads on odd days and even numbered cars on other days, began on January 1 and ends today.

Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party government has declared it a grand success.

Kejriwal's cough reportedly worsened at the start of the winter and his blood sugar levels too have been high, said Sisodia.

Kejriwal had spent 10 days in March last year at the Jindal Nature Cure Institute in Bengaluru, days after he was sworn in as Delhi Chief Minister having swept elections in the capital. He will be visiting the same a health farm this year.

At the institute on the outskirts of Bengaluru, he had done yoga and was kept on a strict diet to treat his cough and diabetes.

Last year, the 47-year-old chief minister was admitted to the institute along with his parents and had booked a suite called the "Nest".

Doctors had advised Kejriwal a strong follow up for lifestyle modification, dietary changes and the daily practice of yoga. Kejriwal has just finished a tour of Punjab, where he launched his party's campaign for next year's election at a religious fair in Muktsar.

04:19   Anglicans suspend Episcopal Church over same-sex marriage
The Episcopal Church, long the church of the establishment in the United States, has been punished by the international Anglican Communion over its acceptance of same-sex marriage.

The decision was made Thursday at a meeting in Canterbury, England, where leaders of the Anglican Communion's 38 provinces are gathered. For three years, the Episcopal Church will not be allowed to participate in many of the communion's internal decisions or represent Anglicans in meetings with Christians and other faith groups.

01:37   Widow sues Twitter for spreading ISIS message
The widow of a man killed in a terrorist attack is suing Twitter for serving as a propaganda platform that has fueled the Islamic State group's
"explosive growth."
A suit filed in federal court in the Northern California city of Oakland yesterday accuses Twitter of providing "material support" for terrorists by allowing the group "unfettered" use of the service to spread its message, recruit members, and raise money.
"This material support has been instrumental to the rise of ISIS and has enabled it to carry out numerous terrorist attacks," the lawsuit argued.
Included in those attacks, the lawsuit maintained, was one in Jordan in November of last year that resulted in the plaintiff's husband, Lloyd Fields, being shot dead.

Fields was a government contractor working at a police training facility.
Twitter said that it believed the lawsuit to be "without merit."
