Forty activists of a student group protesting in support of JNU student leader Kanhaiya Kumar have been detained in Chennai. The students were from the All India Students Federation and are demanding that Kanhaiya Kumar be released. The JNUSU leader has been remanded to judicial custody (Tihar jail) till March 2.

The protesters were reportedly attempting to enter the Reserve Bank of India building in Chennai.

In Kolkata, students of the prestigious Jadavpur University went on a protest march demanding the release of Kanhaiya Kumar and action against the lawyers who manhandled him and journalists at the Patiala House Court on Monday and yesterday.

At JNU, Delhi, hours before a protest march by its students, the Vice Chancellor appealed to them to "reconsider" on account of their safety.

In a written appeal (pictured), the university said: "While we appreciate your right to protests, we are apprehensive of your safety outside campus."

JNU has also written to the police and the home ministry requesting adequate security for its students.
