21:33   Who will be responsible if my son dies in custody: Kanhaiya's mother
JNU students union president Kanhaiya Kumar's, mother Meena Devi today slammed the attack on her son in the Patiala House Court premises and questioned who will be responsible if he dies in custody.

"I am not a terrorist's mother. I know it will be proved some day but until then if my son dies in custody, who will be responsible for it? They can call Kanhaiya a threat to nation but cannot protect him from other threats?," his mother Meena Devi told PTI from Bihar over phone.

"What if he had died that day and it was proved later that he was innocent? Will the government give me my son back then? They acted so fast on complaint against my son but they haven't arrested anyone for the attack on Kanhaiya in court," she added.

Meena is an Anganwadi worker who earns Rs 3,500 per month, while her 65-year-old husband who was a farmer has been bedridden for seven years due to paralysis.

Kanhaiya was arrested Friday last in connection with a case of sedition and criminal conspiracy registered over the holding of an event at JNU against the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru. During the event, anti-India slogans were alleged to have been raised.

21:28   Google's Internet balloon 'crashes' in Sri Lanka test flight
A Google balloon, part of the company's high-speed Internet service known as "Project Loon", crashed in a Sri Lankan tea plantation during its maiden test flight, local police said today.

Villages found the deflated balloon with its electronic equipment in the island's central tea-growing region of Gampola on Wednesday night, an officer told AFP.

However Sri Lanka's Information and Communication Technology Agency, which is coordinating the tests with Google, described the landing as controlled and scheduled.

"Google loon balloon safely landed under standard operating procedures in #lka as a part of the test," ICTA chief Muhunthan Canagey said on Twitter.

21:24   PM declines to accept honorary doctorate from BHU
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has declined to receive an honorary doctorate from Banaras Hindu University, citing his policy of not accepting such degrees, official sources said here today.

Modi will be visiting BHU on February 22 to attend its convocation during which the University had proposed to confer him with honorary Doctorate of Law.

BHU, in a statement, had said it proposed to confer Doctor of Laws (LLD) (honoris causa) on Modi in recognition of his "yeoman services as an innovator, reformer and an outstanding leader in public service and governance".

It had requested for his consent but the prime minister has said he will not accept the doctorate, the sources said.

This is not the first time that Modi has declined such a doctorate. In the run up to his US visit in 2014, a university in Louisiana had proposed to confer an honorary doctorate on the prime minister in recognition of his contribution towards social transformation, especially for empowering women and minorities in Gujarat, to which he did not agree.

21:20   Mallya defiant on 'defaulter' tag; says PNB not 'the only bank'
Days after Punjab National Bank declared him a 'wilful defaulter', embattled businessman Vijay Mallya today appeared defiant saying "PNB is not the only bank and he will do what he has to do".

Known for his flamboyance and hosting lavish parties even when his companies have been declared defaulters by lenders, Mallya also said everybody has his own "perception" about his lifestyle and he would not comment on it.

He, however, maintained his future action was to achieve settlement with banks.

PNB is the third public sector bank to declare now defunct Kingfisher Airline and its two guarantors -- United Breweries (Holdings) Ltd and Mallya -- as wilful defaulters. Earlier, United Bank of India and SBI had done the same.

Talking to Times Now news channel, Mallya said PNB was "not the only bank" and he "will do what he has to do."

19:53   Govt to ask Twitter to block accounts with Hafiz Links
Security agencies will approach Twitter India to block all accounts having links with Lashkar-e-Taiba founder Hafiz Saeed and Jamaat-ud-Dawa which are often found to be spreading venom against India.
There are several accounts which have links with LeT's front outfit, Jamaat-ud-Dawa, as well as terror mastermind Saeed and it has become necessary to shut these down as quickly as possible, officials said.
"We are approaching Twitter India which in turn will tell its US-based parent company to deactivate the accounts. Hopefully, it will be done soon," a official said.

Earlier, Twitter had blocked several accounts operated by Jamaat-ud-Dawa, headed by Saeed, following requests from security agencies in different countries, including India and the US. However, such accounts again cropped up after a gap of several months.

19:11   Pak 'pretending to sleep' on Pathankot strike probe: Parrikar
Hitting out at Pakistan for dismissing evidence provided by India in connection with the Pathankot terror attack, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar today accused the neighbouring country of "pretending to
sleep" and not being serious about the probe.
The minister also ruled out allowing the Pakistani Special Investigation Team into the Pathankot air base.

Noting it is a matter that concerns the Prime Minister's Office and the Ministry of External Affairs, Parrikar told Karan Thapar in his programme 'To the Point' on India Today TV channel, "If somebody pretends to fall asleep, it's difficult to find out."
He was asked about Pakistan's claim that the evidence given by India is not concrete enough.

Told that Pakistan has also claimed that Pakistani mobile numbers given by India were "unregistered and had fake identities", Parrikar responded, "Fake identity and non-registration indicates connivance of some. You have to investigate and find out who gave numbers that are not
registered."

19:03   ISIS preparing dirty bomb, says report
Islamic State terrorists in Iraq may have stolen a case of extremely radioactive material which they could fashion into a so-called dirty bomb for Western targets, according to a media report.
The radioactive matter, which was stored in a protective case, the size of a laptop computer, was seized from a storage facility near the Iraqi city of Basra last November, Daily Express reported.
It quoted an Iraqi security source as saying: "We are afraid the radioactive element will fall into the hands of Daesh. They could simply attach it to explosives to make a dirty bomb."
The theft has only come to light now, which means ISIS scientists could have been working on converting the irradiated material into a bomb for more than three months, raising fears that they could attempt to smuggle the material into Europe to cause devastating casualties.

18:50   Pakistan student union writes letter of solidarity to JNU
For protesters terming the JNU students agitation as 'anti-national', Pakistan has been a recurring subject of verbal venom.

Now, the JNU students have found support from across the border, with a students group issuing a strongly-worded condemnation of the government action against them.

"We strongly condemn the arrest of Kanhaiya Kumar (JNUSU), the attack on JNU and extend our solidarity and lend our entire support to the brave students standing against this injustice," the Democratic Students' Alliance in Pakistan has said in a statement.

The DSA describes itself as an 'informal organisation of left-leaning students who wish to work with the working class to attain progressive changes in Pakistani society'.

Left leader Kavita Krishnan, who posted the message on Facebook, said, "They say they understand what JNU is going through, because they are labelled pro-India and anti-national every time they protest against their government."

18:40   No progress likely on Siachen, say South Asia experts
The death of 10 Indian soldiers in an avalanche on Siachen has put the focus back on what is dubbed the world's highest battlefield where India and Pakistan stand eyeball to eyeball in the Himalayan heights. The two neighbours have been discussing this glacier in their talks but, point out Howard and Teresita Schaffer in southasiahand.com, 'progress is unlikely' when and if the two countries sit down to talk again.

'Although the Modi government was willing to exchange with Bangladesh a small number of enclaves along their border, abandoning territory in Kashmir would strike a much different nerve both in the ruling BJP, the army, and the country at large. (It would be easier for the Pakistanis to accept since their military, which calls the shots on these issues, could argue that Pakistan had got the better deal by forcing the Indians off the main glacier range.) So the issue is likely to continue to perplex outsiders like ourselves,' they say, here.

18:38   An open letter to Arnab Goswami
That Times Now, which has been flooding the airwaves with its 'We Changed the News' ads of late, has been attracting a lot of flak over its coverage of the JNU protests.

And Aarti Sethi has added her voice with an open letter in kaafila.org to India's most famous news anchor.

'You are a bully and a brute.  It may seem a strange thing to say, that it is how you say things more than the things you say that seem to bother me,' she says in it.

Arnab's performance on News Hour night after night 'is not about love for India, or patriotism, or the country. This has nothing to do with love of anything at all. This is simply the infantile vengeful response of a child lashing out at thwarted desire. So what is it that you want Arnab? What will fulfill you?' Aarti Sethi asks.

'You are not an angry man Arnab. You are a hate-filled man. This is why night after night you can marshall such limitless reserves of deranged indignation. A lesser person would be spent. But not you. You persevere,' she says.

'I am writing to ask you to stop. Put yourself on a diet. Moderate your appetite. Curb your gluttony. Because when finally the snake has eaten its own tail there is no snake left. Just a creature whose eyes can only look at its own arse. I am asking you to behave yourself so this country does not become a public urinal in which we wallow in our own shit because we mistake it for gold (this is Freud not me, and he's dead so you can call him an anti-national in heaven where he most certainly is),' Aarti writes, here.

18:34   Rahul attacks Maya, BJP over Dalit issues
Taking on BSP chief Mayawati, a key contender for power in Uttar Pradesh, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi today accused her of not "encouraging Dalit leadership" in a bid to keep her "firm grip on power".
He also attacked the Modi government, accusing it of "killing" Rohith Vemula, the Dalit scholar from Hyderabad university, whose suicide triggered a nationwide outrage.

"Mayawati did not utilise the platform provided by Kanshiram...she did not encourage Dalit leadership in the party in a bid to keep her firm grip on power," he said addressing a 'Dalit concalve' at party office here.
He alleged the BSP chief, in fact, "crushed and suppressed" emerging Dalit leadership.

"Mayawati failed to ensure proper benefit to the Dalits. She did not promote young Dalit leadership when she became the Chief Minister. She tried to crush and suppress Dalit leadership and attempted to concentrate all power in her hand," he alleged.

16:12   SC clears decks for formation of new govt in Arunachal
Just in: The Supreme Court  clears the decks for formation of a new govt in Arunachal Pradhesh. The SC vacates the February 17 order asking for a status quo to be maintained.

The Apex Court yesterday directed the Narendra Modi government to maintain status quo in Arunachal Pradesh. The ruling, which came shortly after the Union Cabinet recommended that President's rule be revoked in the state, put paid to any possibility of a rebel Congress government being propped up with dissident leader Kalikho Pul as the chief minister.

The Union Cabinet had earlier in the day recommended that President's rule be revoked on the basis of a home ministry note.

The note incorporated a report from Governor JP Rajkhowa on the political situation there in which he claimed that conditions were conducive to permit parties to go for a floor test, officials said. With the court staying the recommendation, the Modi government will need to approach the court through the Attorney General before it can be forwarded to the President for action. If the government does so unilaterally, it risks facing a confrontation with the judiciary.

14:11   'Bring flowers, scarves, placards'... activist Kavita Krishnan to flag off solidarity march
Kavita Krishnan, Secretary of the All India Progressive Women's Association and an activist confirms that a solidarity march will be held in New Delhi from Mandi House to Jantar Mantar over the JNU issue. Reproduced here is what she posted on Facebook a few hours ago.

"There are many rumours floating about suggesting that today's March has been cancelled, police denied permission etc. None of them is true. The JNU Solidarity March is very much happening, Mandi House to Jantar Mantar at 2 pm onwards. BUT some IMPORTANT CONCERNS that I appeal ALL to keep in mind:

1) We must give no pretext or excuse whatsoever to any right-wing goons to attack us, so let's keep the gathering at Mandi House silent and orderly. Bring scarves to tie around mouths if you can - to signify the gagging of free speech and of Constitutional liberties by the use of the sedition law. Bring flowers - lots of flowers.

2) Slogans on the placards - let us stick to those slogans widely accepted and shared by the broad, wide solidarity that has been forged. This March is not the place to insist on raising slogans on which there may be differences. Sure, we need to create and defend spaces to discuss contentious areas of our differences too - including on subjects the State deems 'seditious' - BUT this March is not the time or place for that. Let our placards highlight our demands re JNU, re Rohith Vemula, and assert the spirit of Dr Ambedkar and the Constitution.

3) We will not clash with police: we will cooperate in every possible way to make sure the gathering is peaceful. That is, we will not seek to break barricades or enter into arguments/scuffles with cops. If stopped by police anywhere, we will sit right then and there peacefully. We appeal to media to cover us - wherever we may be sitting.

4) As I said right at the beginning, we will not enter into slogan wars with any right-wing group - rather let our silence resound, in contrast with any noise or provocation on their part. Our numbers will be large today - BUT we will not use the confidence of large numbers to get into scuffles or clashes with ANY right-wing group - we will REFUSE to enter into any such confrontation. Lastly - every single participant in the March is encouraged to help make sure these norms are followed by their friends, companions, fellow marchers. A lot is at stake - including the freedom and safety of Com Kanhaiyya and each other JNU student who is being hunted by the police. We will NOT allow the March to be portrayed by anyone as 'a clash between two groups' etc."

13:56   Pak PM spent Rs 63 crore on foreign jaunts
Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is under fire for spending a whopping Rs 63.8 crore on his foreign trips and living at least every fifth day of his tenure out of the cash-strapped country.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed the National Assembly yesterday that Sharif has spent a total of 185 days abroad in 65 foreign tours with accompanying staff of 631 officers.

Sharif came to power in June 2013 and has been regularly going abroad, despite growing criticism by opposition and media. His trips have cost the national exchequer Rs 638.27 million.

In stark contrast to his stay abroad during his tenure, Sharif visited the National Assembly just 35 times during his 940 days in power. According to the data provided the National Assembly, Sharif visited Britain 17 times, spending about two months in the UK, of which 32 days were listed as official stay while 24 were listed as transits.

However, during each transit, Sharif stopped for at least a couple of days which cost the exchequer Rs 13.7 crore.

Sharif has a soulmate in PM Narendra Modi, whose foreign trips cost the exchequer over Rs 37 crore with his Australia trip proving to be the most expensive one.

Documents accessed under RTI Act reveal that Indian missions in 16 countries spent Rs 37.22 crore in one year. Modi visited 20 countries between June 2014 and June 2015.

13:27   Pichai backs Apple in battle over unlocking terrorist's iPhone
Google CEO Sundar Pichai has backed Apple in its battle with FBI over opposing a US court's ruling to unlock the iPhone of a Pakistani-American terrorist who shot dead 14 people in California, saying forcing companies to enable hacking could "compromise" user's privacy.

In a series of tweets, Pichai said that although Google gives "law enforcement access to data based on valid legal orders", but it is "wholly different than requiring companies to enable hacking of customer devices and data," which could set a "troubling precendent".

"Forcing companies to enable hacking could compromise user's privacy," the Indian-American CEO said as he supported Apple CEO Tim Cook's stand.

"We know that law enforcement and intelligence agencies face significant challenges in protecting the public against crime and terrorism," Pichai said. "We build secure products to keep your information safe and we give law enforcement access to data based on valid legal orders," he said.

"But that's wholly different than requiring companies to enable hacking of customer devices and data. Could be a troubling precedent," he said as debates are on on the merits of the case between Apple and federal law enforcement agencies.

An online statement purportedly by 'Indian students condemning the government's response to student dissenters' went up on Google at midnight yesterday, 'to gather around, to state our collective opinion -- aloud to ourselves and to our country, and to show that we are many, that students who feel this way come from all parts of the country and from myriad backgrounds. It is a place for us to realise our own numbers and strength.'

The document, which is in English and eight Indian languages, is being translated in as many languages as possible, and seeks the endorsement of those who agree with it.

It states: "As students of varied disciplines, we greatly value the unfettered space Indian universities and colleges provide for varied political views and ideologies as well as for activism, and we believe it is crucial that this freedom be safeguarded. These are not only relevant to our education, but also to our development as aware and engaged citizens.

"We wish to state strongly that we do not think that expressing discontent against state action, for example by protesting the hanging of Afzal Guru or Yakub Memon, threatens our country as much as the all-powerful state using violence and outdated colonial laws against its own young citizens does. The use of force and high-handedness by the state teaches young people that this is the language in which public debates must be conducted.

"We are disappointed that our government has forgotten our history -- that we are a people who through non-violent assertion of individual and collective rights, triumphed over state brutality. We are shocked that our government thinks that concern for the nation can take only one form, that which it endorses. We are disgusted that it uses its enormous power to silence students who bring attention to the injustice that our poor and marginalised face. We reject the legacy of divisiveness and suppression that not only this government but many previous ones have left us.

"As young participants in a democracy, we seek a country that will celebrate not only a diversity of languages, foods, arts, music, religions and ethnicities, but an equally diverse range of political views. If the state cannot and will not allow for the forming of such a country, the young people of this country will resolve to intensify their (democratic, non-violent and inclusive) struggle against the narrow-minded and majoritarian powers that be."

12:05   6 CPI-M workers arrested over RSS workers's death
Six CPI-M workers were arrested late last night in connection with the brutal murder of a 27-year-old RSS worker in poll-bound Kerala's Kannur district, from where two incidents of bombs being hurled were also reported this morning. The police said the arrests were recorded late last night.

Those arrested are Srijayan, Joy Joseph, Prasanth, Prabesh, Libin and Akash, all hailing from the district.

The police said a 20-member gang was involved in the attack on Sujit, carried out on Monday night.

The CPI-M workers had barged into the house of Sujit at Papinesseri in the district and brutally hacked him in front of his aged parents and brother, who also suffered injuries.Sujit later succumbed to injuries.

While the BJP had slammed CPI-M for the attack, the Marxist party had denied it saying it was the fallout of a local incident relating to insulting a girl.

The BJP had maintained that the CPI-M was behind the attack to get over the embarrassment of the arrest of its party district secretary, P Jayarajan, an accused in the murder of a BJP functionary in 2014.

The violence comes after a lull in Kannur, which frequently witnesses clashes between the CPI-M and BJP. On Wednesday morning, country bombs had been hurled at an RSS seva kendra and at the house of a BJP worker in Thalassery in the district. But none were injured.

01:24   All you need to know: Apple vs FBI
A federal judge has ordered Apple to make it easier to access a phone recovered from one of the San Bernardino shooters and Apple has said no.

It said that this would amount to creating a backdoor to the iPhone that doesn't exist today and that could have "chilling" implications beyond breaking into one device.

Apple's concern is that once a master key exists it would be able to unlock any device in someone's possession, and it could then be used by hackers, criminals and governments.

A battle of this kind has been looming since 2014. That's when Apple started making the iPhone with additional encryption the company couldn't unlock itself.
