This is one motion that will get 'ayes' across party lines in both Houses of Parliament.

A 100 per cent salary hike for MPs.

Our sources tell us that the parliamentary panel report recommending a pay hike for Members of Parliament was approved by Union finance minister Arun Jaitley yesterday and submitted to the Prime Minister's Office.

A joint committee of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members has prepared a report recommending the following changes in the pay structure for MPs:

-- Monthly salary to be hiked from the present Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh,
-- Constituency allowance raised from Rs 45,000 to Rs 90,000
-- Secretarial assistance plus office allowance raised from Rs 45,000 to Rs 90,000.
-- Dearness allowance would be in addition to the salary.
-- Furniture allowance doubled to 1,50,000.
-- The report recommends that all MPs be given broadband BSNL connections of Rs 1700 per month installed at the MP's official residence in his constituency. BSNL will create a wi-fi zone for MPs at with a range of 500 metres.

If this comes into effect, it will cost the exchequer Rs 250 crore per year.

The pay panel, headed by Bharatiya Janata Party leader Yogi Adityanath, also recommended around 75 percent raise in pensions and an automatic mechanism for salary hike for MPs.

Consequently, the pension for former MPs has also been increased from Rs 20,000 to Rs 35,000.
