Before the party, the Queen's quiet stay at Downton

The Queen prepared for her birthday extravaganza this week with an overnight trip to Downton Abbey.

She spent last weekend at Highclere Castle, the Jacobean-style stately home in Hampshire which stands in for Downton in the TV series.

The Queen was the guest of her godson George Herbert, 59, the 8th Earl of Carnarvon and his wife Fiona.Rather than the imposing castle where the Earl of Grantham is the fictional master, I understand the Queen stayed with Lord and Lady Carnarvon in the couple's dower house.
