23:20   Trump voices opposition to transgender bathroom law
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said today that transgender people should be able to use whichever bathroom they choose, voicing opposition to part of a far-reaching North Carolina law that critics says is discriminatory.

Speaking at a town hall event on NBC's "Today" Thursday, Trump was asked about North Carolina's so-called "bathroom law," which, among other things, requires transgender people to use bathrooms corresponding to the gender on their birth certificate in state government buildings as well as public schools and universities.

Trump said the law had caused unnecessary strife for the state, which he said had paid "a big price" economically.

"There have been very few complaints the way it is. People go, they use the bathroom that they feel is appropriate," said Trump. "There has been so little trouble."

Trump's main rival, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, immediately fired back, saying that Trump is giving in to "political correctness."

20:18   '26/11 case to delay further if India doesn't send witnesses'
With the last three hearings in the the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack case being adjourned, Pakistani officials have warned that the trial, going on for six years, could face further delay if India does not send 24 Indian witnesses to Pakistan to record their statements.

"The hearing of the case is adjourned without any proceedings during the last three consecutive weeks (hearings) April 6, 13 and 20, because the Pakistani government is still awaiting its counterpart's response about sending (Indian) witnesses to Pakistan for recording statements in the case," a court official said today. He said the case may further be delayed if India does not send witnesses to Pakistan. Pakistan has asked India to send all the 24 Indian witnesses to depose before the anti-terrorism court holding the Mumbai attack trial.

According to the prosecution, the trial court had completed recording the statements of all Pakistani witnesses in the case which has been underway in the country for more than six years.

"Now the ball is in India's court. The Indian government should send all Indian witnesses of the Mumbai case to Pakistan to record their statements so that the trial could further move ahead," a prosecution lawyer had said.

18:24   Priyanka sashays into Time's 100 most influential people
RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan, tennis star Sania Mirza, actress Priyanka Chopra, Google CEO Sundar Pichai and founders of Flipkart Binny Bansal and Sachin Bansal have been named by Time magazine in its list of the '100 Most Influential People in the World'.

Time's annual list, released today, includes pioneers like American composer Lin Manuel-Miranda, leaders like IMF head Christine Lagarde and icons like Oscar-winning actor Leonardo DiCaprio who are "exploring the frontiers of art, science, society, technology and more."

Terming Rajan as "India's prescient banker," Time said he is among a rare breed of "economic seers" who he "steered" India through the global crisis and fallout, "playing a large role in making it one of the emerging-market stars of the moment.

While serving as the youngest chief economist of the IMF from 2003 to 2006, Time said Rajan predicted the subprime crisis that would lead to the Great Recession, standing up to critics like former US Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, who labeled him a "Luddite".

"Since then, more and more of the economic establishment has come to share Rajan's view that debt-fueled growth is just a saccharine substitute for the real thing," Time said.

In a profile for Mirza, cricket superstar Sachin Tendulkar writes that her "confidence, strength and resilience reach beyond tennis" and she has inspired a generation of Indians to pursue their dreams " and to realize that they can also be the best." Tendulkar described Mirza, who recently was awarded India's third highest civilian honour the Padma Bhushan, as an "inspiration" on the court.

He lauded her "dedication and willpower" to reinvent herself fully as a doubles player when her singles career was cut short by wrist injuries. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was among the probable contenders for the list, was not in the final list determined by Time's editors.

Modi was among Time's 100 most influential people in the world last year. On Chopra, who was awarded the Padma Shri this year, actor Dwayne Johnson said she is a "star rising higher" and lauded her "drive, ambition, self-respect, and she knows there's no substitute for hard work."

Time said Flipkart founders Binny Bansal and Sachin Bansal may have come across as arrogant when they told investors the company they started in 2007 as an online bookstore could be worth USD 100 million in a decade. "It turned out to be modesty: Flipkart now has 75 million users and a USD 13 billion valuation," Time said.

18:01   PM, Amit Shah must apologise for murdering Constitution: Cong on Uttarakhand
The Uttarakhand High Court's verdict setting aside imposition of President's rule in the state on Thursday spurred an elated Congress to attack the BJP, demanding an apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah for "trampling" democracy and "murdering" the constitution.

The verdict is a slap on face of BJP for trying to dislodge an elected government, it said.Terming the court's verdict as a victory of people of Uttarakhand, democracy and constitutional norms, AICC Incharge Communications Randeep Singh Surjewala said Prime Minister Modi and Amit Shah should learn a lesson from this "decisive and resounding verdict.

"This is a victory for the people of Uttarakhand, democracy and constitutional norms. This is also a slap on the face of those in BJP who sought to dislodge an elected government, elected with the mandate of people in Uttarakhand.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah will be well advised to now tender an unconditional apology to the nation and also to people of Uttarakhand for trampling upon democracy, murdering constitution norms and subjugating the will of people to their blind quest to dislodge Congress governments. We welcome the verdict," Surjewala said.

He said that it proves the full majority which Congress enjoys and the "sinister conspiracies' which are being hatched from Arunanchal Pradesh to Uttarakhand and many other states to dislodge elected governments by "foul means, use of money and muscle power' should now at least come to an end.

"Prime Minister Modi and Amit Shah should learn a lesson from this decisive and resounding verdict," he said. Putting up a brave front, BJP claimed the Harish Rawat government in Uttarakhand is in minority and that this will be proved on April 29.

17:41   Banks have no right to demand details of assets: Mallya to SC
Vijay Mallya, wanted in India for unpaid loans worth nearly a billion dollars, has said that banks have no right to details of the assets owned by either his family or him.

Armed with a non-bailable arrest warrant against him, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has approached the external affairs ministry seeking initiation of deportation proceedings against businessman Vijay Mallya in connection with its money laundering probe against him in the Rs 900 crore IDBI alleged loan fraud case.

The agency has written to MEA and will also soon write to the CBI to get an Interpol red corner notice (RCN) issued against the Rajya Sabha MP to get him arrested, based on the NBW directed by a Mumbai court.

Mallya flew to London early in March just as a group of banks, most of them state-run, ramped up efforts to recover the money given to his Kingfisher Airlines, which became defunct in 2013.

The 60-year-old has told the Supreme Court today that the vast loans were not given to his airline on the basis of his properties or assets.

Though he will share these with the top court, the entrepreneur asked that the information not be passed on to the banks.

16:55   Paris suspect Salah Abdeslam charged over Brussels shootout
Just in: Paris suspect Salah Abdeslam charged over Brussels shootout, reports AFP.

Salah Abdeslam, the key suspect in November's Paris attacks, will be extradited to France from Belgium in a few weeks to allow for additional questioning by Belgian investigators, his lawyer said on Thursday.

Abdeslam, who returned from Paris hours after the Islamic State attacks in which his brother blew himself up, hid from police for four months until he was captured in a raid on a house in the Brussels district of Molenbeek on March 18.

His fingerprints were found three days earlier in an apartment in the southern Brussels borough of Forest after a gunbattle during which an Islamist gunman was shot dead and four police officers were injured.

Prosecutors want to question him about that incident, his lawyer said. "There is a hearing, which will take place regarding the attempted murder of several police officers during the home search in Forest," Sven Mary said.

The shooting and bombing rampage by Islamic State militants killed 130 people in Paris on Nov. 13.

16:30   Did the MP home minister touch a woman inappropriately?
Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Babulal Gaur, who had earlier stirred a hornet's nest after describing rape as a social crime, courted controversy yet again on Thursday after he was caught on camera allegedly touching a woman inappropriately as she was climbing on to a bus during an event in Bhopal.

Gaur, who flagged off the 'low floor' buses in an event, was seen allegedly touching the woman as she climbed on to a bus. However, there seemed to be no immediate reaction to the incident as no one, including the woman, made any objections.

This is not the first time Gaur has courted controversy, as in 2013, the senior minister was seen enjoying a dance performance by skimpily clad women on a ferry in Goa.

Besides such incidents, Gaur has also made headlines through several sexist and controversial comments. In January 2013, Gaur raised a furore over his statement that the 'foreign culture' of women wearing jeans and T-shirts, drinking liquor and dancing with other men was not good for India.

16:24   ISIS executes 250 women for refusing to become sex slaves: Report
The Islamic State, notorious for its brutality, has reportedly executed 250 girls in northern Iraq for refusing to become sex slaves, according to a media report.

The girls had been ordered to accept temporary marriages to the terrorists and were murdered, sometimes alongside their families, for their refusal to be sex slaves in Iraq's second largest city of Mosul.

ISIS began selecting women of Mosul and forced them into marrying its militants, calling it temporary marriage since it has taken control over Mosul, and the women who refused to submit to this practice would be executed, said Kurdish Democratic Party spokesman Said Mamuzini.

"At least 250 girls have so far been executed by IS for refusing to accept the practice of sexual jihad, and sometimes the families of the girls were also executed for rejecting to submit to IS's request," Mamuzini told London-based Kurdish news agency 'AhlulBayt'.

16:13   Private US firms oppose ISRO launching US satellites
Amid the US' push to expand cooperation with India in the space sector, the country's nascent private space industry has expressed its opposition to the large scale use of low cost ISRO launch vehicles for putting American satellites into orbits.

Such a move, corporate leaders and officials of the fast- emerging American private space industry told lawmakers this week, would be detrimental to the future health of the private sector US space companies.

They feel it would be tough for them to compete against low-cost Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) launch vehicles, which they alleged are subsidised by the Indian government.

"I think the concern about using Indian boosters is not so much the transfer of sensitive technology to a nation that is a fellow democracy, but rather whether the Indian launches are subsidised by the government to a degree that other market actors would be priced out of the market," Elliot Holokauahi Pulham, CEO of Space Foundation, said.

Testifying before a Congressional committee, Pulham said there has been some discussion about allowing US built satellites to fly on boosters such as the Indian PSLV.

15:37   President's rule in Uttarakhand set aside, floor test on April 29
President's rule has been set aside in Uttarakhand with the high court allowing former Chief Minister Harish Rawat's plea challenging the imposition of President's rule.

The court also ordered a fresh floor test on April 29.

The status quo as on date of proclamation of President's rule should be restored and the government led by petitioner Rawat will revive, the order said.

Article 356 was imposed in Uttarakhand contrary to law laid down by the Supreme Court, the high court said, and that material considered for imposing President's rule was found "wanting".

Nine dissident Congress MLAs who rebelled against Chief Minister Rawat, setting off the constitutional crisis, have to pay the price of committing the "Constitutional sin" of defection by being disqualified, the court said. Their fate was entirely irrelevant and extraneous to the imposition of President's rule.

The Uttarakhand high court said that it was "pained" by the Centre's actions in the case over the imposition of President's rule, with Chief Justice K M Joseph saying the central government, which should be impartial, was acting like a "private party".

The court's stinging reaction came after Harish Rawat's counsel presented his apprehension that the Centre might revoke President's rule in Uttarakhand and try and get the BJP to form a government before the final verdict was out.

Rejecting the Centre's plea for stay, the court said, "We won't stay our own judgment. You can go to Supreme Court and get it stayed.'

13:28   Breivik: Extremist who killed 77 people in Norway wins part of human rights case
The man who massacred 77 people in Norway's deadliest ever terror attack has won part of a lawsuit against the government for "inhuman treatment".

The right-wing extremist was convicted of terrorism and mass murder for 2011 bomb and gun attacks in Norway that killed 77 people.

A summary of the ruling released by an Oslo district court said judges found his detention violated article three of the European Convention of Human Rights, which relates to "inhuman or degrading' punishment. The verdict said: "The prohibition of inhuman and degrading treatment represents a fundamental value in a democratic society. This applies no matter what - also in the treatment of terrorists and killers."

Breivik's claim that authorities also violated article eight of the convention, which protects the respect for private and family life, including correspondence, was rejected. The court also ruled that the state will have to pay the prisoner's legal fees, totalling 331,000 Norwegian krone.

13:19   Giriraj Singh's new gyan: Fix 2-child norm for all religions to keep daughters safe
'Hindu daughters' need protection and the only way to ensure that is to enforce a two-child policy for all religions, Union minister Giriraj Singh was reported speaking to the The Indian Express.

"Daughters will not be safe and might have to be kept under the veil, like in Pakistan," said the Bharatiya Janata Party leader, according to the report.

The minister of state for micro, small and medium enterprises was speaking at a cultural yatra in Bagaha, West Champaran, and, according to the report, various Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh workers were present in the audience.

The threat, in Singh's mind, emanates from one particular community. In his speech, Singh referred to seven districts in Bihar where "our" (Hindu) population has ostensibly "gone down" and the Muslim population grown. He tried to emphasise his point by warning that if the situation continued unabated, then Hindus would have to keep their daughters under the veil like in Pakistan.

12:37   CPI(M) accuses TMC of unleashing terror, lashes out at EC
The killing of a CPI(M) polling agent in Murshidabad district today kicked off a blame game between CPI(M) and TMC, with the Left party alleging that TMC had unleashed a "reign of terror" while EC was only acting as a "mute spectator".

The TMC denied the allegations and said the killing was a fallout of differences between CPI(M) and Congress.

The 35-year-old CPI(M) polling agent, Tahidul Islam, was today killed and his body was found lying outside a polling booth at Shibapara area under Domkal Assembly seat in Murshidabad district where third phase polling is on. An earlier report had identified Tahidul Islam to be a CPI(M) supporter.

12:24   Chinese dissidents to meet in India to seek democracy
Chinese dissidents from around the world will assemble in India next week to hold an international conference seeking transition to democracy in the communist country.

New Delhi not only gave its go-ahead to the organisers to hold the conference in India, but also granted visas to Chinese dissidents, including the World Uyghur Congress leader, Dolkun Isa, who has been dubbed as a "terrorist' by Beijing.

The conference will be held from April 28 to May 1 at Dharamsala in Himachal Pradesh -- the seat of the Tibetan Government-in-Exile. Dalai Lama, who has been leading Tibetans' struggle against Chinese rule in Tibet, will receive the delegates and address them.

New Delhi's move, which is likely to raise hackles in Beijing, comes at a time, when India is upset over China's decision to block the proposal to impose United Nations' sanctions on Pakistan-based terrorist leader Moulana Masood Azhar.Isa, the chairman of the executive committee of the World Uyghur Congress (WUC), told DH from Munich that he had already been granted visa by the Indian government to attend the conference in Dharamsala.

However, he would take a final call only after assessing his security in India, as China got a Red Corner Notice issued against him by Interpol, he said.

12:10   India to hold exhibition on displaced Polish kids during WWII
India will organise an exhibition at the United Nations displaying stories of displaced Polish children, mostly orphans, finding refuge in India during World War II, offering a message of "humanism" as the world faces the biggest refugee crisis in recent history.

The exhibition 'Passage to India - The Wartime Odyssey of Polish Children and the Good Maharaja' that will start tomorrow has been jointly organised by the Permanent Missions of India and Poland to the UN.

The exhibition depicts the "touching story" from the times of the great war when more than 1000 Polish children, mostly orphans, deported from occupied Poland to Siberia and got a new home in India due to the generosity of Maharaja Jam Saheb Digvijaysinhji Ranjitsinhji of Nawangar.

"When allowed to leave camps in 1941/1942, they travelled all the way to India where the Maharaja created a new home for them," at a "difficult time when the world was at war" and India itself was struggling for its independence, a statement on the Indian mission's website said.

The Polish camps flourished in India until the end of the second world war and the last of the Polish families left the country in 1948. "This beautiful account of compassion is surprisingly meaningful nowadays, when the world faces crises and large numbers of refugees and migrants seek their new homes. It shows that humanism and friendship between nations can go a long way in addressing crises," it read.

In February, the Indian mission under the aegis of Permanent Representative Syed Akbaruddin along with Department of Public Information's Remember Slavery Programme had organised the exhibition 'Africans in India:  From Slaves to Generals and Rulers' at the world body's headquarters.

The exhibition told the history of enslaved East Africans in India, known as Sidis and Habshis, who rose to positions of military and political authority. Through colourful photographs and texts, the exhibition had conveyed that success of the enslaved East Africans in India was a "testimony to the open-mindedness" of Indian society, in which they were a small religious and ethnic minority.

The exhibition, which shed light on the slave trade in the Indian Ocean and the history of Africa and its diaspora in India, was part of the observance of the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade, commemorated every year on March 25.

11:26   TERI governing council asks Pachauri to leave with immediate effect
The Governing Council of The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) has decided to end TERI's association with R K Pachauri with immediate effect. In a meeting held on Monday, the Governing Council, headed by new Chairman Ashok Chawla ex finance Secretary, has decided to pay a lump sum to Pachauri whose contract with TERI ends in July 2017.

As a consequence, he will cease to be Executive Vice-Chairman, a post the Council had created for him in February this year.

Pachauri went on indefinite leave in February following an uproar over what was seen as his promotion amidst the sexual harassment controversy.

The governing body, which includes industry stalwarts such as Naina Lal Kidwai and Deepak Parekh, received criticism for not taking action against Pachauri.

The complainant had quit the organisation, saying it did not take adequate action against him.

TERI's internal complaints' committee had found Pachauri guilty of sexual harassment, although the verdict has since been stayed by an industrial tribunal.

11:17   Which Ambedkar?
The most recent issue of the Organiser, the English journal of the RSS, has a picture of B.R. Ambedkar on its cover, hailing him as the Ultimate Unifier. The issue (dated April 17, 2016) features several articles on the great man, one saying he provided the glue for nation building, a second arguing that his visions and actions resembled that of Brahmo Samaj, Prarthana Samaj, Arya Samaj, etc, a third praising his interest in workers rights, a fourth calling him a timeless leader who apparently was not against Brahmins but against [the] Brahmanical order.

All the essays, and the issue as a whole, are entirely celebratory. But what did the RSS and its mouthpiece think of Ambedkar and his work while he was alive? In seeking an answer, I focused on the years 1949-50, when, as law minister in the government of India, Ambedkar was both finalising the Indian Constitution as well as advocating the reform of Hindu personal laws so as to give greater rights to women.

Notably, the RSS disapproved of both efforts.

09:52   Handwara molestation row: Girl not welcome by classmates
The ordeal is not over for the 16-year-old girl, whose allegation of being molested by an army man sparked violent clashes in Jammu and Kashmir's Handwara, leading to the death of four protesters, and imposition of an eight-day curfew.

The teenager faces stiff hostility at her school from classmates suspicious of her recorded statement that later cleared the army of the charges and instead pinned the blame on two locals who she said sexually assaulted her on her way back from a toilet.

Schools opened in the small town, torn by violence, yesterday, and at the Government Girls Higher Secondary School in Handwara, only 20 students out of the 1,150 were present.

The teachers are worried about her future and the principal has assured that she will be given all the help needed to return to her normal life of a teen, but her classmates are not so sure. "I don't think she will ever come back to this school," a classmate, who refused to be identified, said.

04:44   Data from San Bernardino phone has helped in probe
Hacking the San Bernardino terrorist's iPhone has produced data the FBI didn't have before and has helped the investigators answer some remaining questions in the ongoing probe, U.S. law enforcement officials say.

Apple and the FBI are squaring off again Tuesday in testimony at a House hearing on encryption, with the recent battle over unlocking a terrorist's phone looming in the background.

Investigators are now more confident that terrorist Syed Farook didn't make contact with another plotter during an 18-minute gap that the FBI said was missing from their time line of the attackers' whereabouts after the mass shooting, the officials said.

04:09   Up to 500 feared dead in Mediterranean shipwreck last week
As many as 500 people are feared dead after a shipwreck last week in the Mediterranean Sea, two international groups said today, describing survivors' accounts of panicked passengers who desperately tried to stay
afloat by jumping between vessels.
The disaster happened in waters between Italy and Libya, based on accounts from 41 survivors who were rescued Saturday by a merchant ship, according to the UN refugee agency and the International Organization for Migration.

02:11   US warns of links between Islamic State, Boko Haram
At "Ground Zero" in Africa's counterterrorism fight, senior US officials warned of deepening links between the Islamic State and Boko Haram and
prodded Chad's ruling strongman to introduce reforms for the
sake of long-term stability.
But in a rare appearance before foreign journalists at his presidential palace, Chadian President Idriss Deby indicated he wouldn't help in the US-backed effort to install a unity government in Libya, his country's northern neighbor, a former foe and an incubator for Muslim extremist groups.

The visit to Chad by America's UN envoy, Samantha Power, and top US military officials such as Brig. Gen. Donald Bolduc, commander of special operations in Africa, highlights the country's precarious position dealing with a multitude of hostile militant groups and unstable neighboring governments.

01:19   Pentagon sends B-52 bomber into action against IS group
The US Air Force has started using its hulking B-52 bombers against the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria, but the enormous aircraft are only
conducting precision strikes, a military spokesman said today.
The B-52 Stratofortress -- originally designed in the 1950s -- became a symbol of US might during the Cold War and the plane was used to conduct carpet bombing in Vietnam.

Colonel Steve Warren, a Baghdad-based spokesman, said a B-52 was sent Monday to destroy an IS weapons storage facility in the Iraqi town of Qayyarah, about 35 miles (60 kilometers) south of Mosul.
He said use of B-52s would not lead to a greater risk of civilian casualties because the aircraft are only being armed with guided bombs.

00:57   Ukraine warns it may take 'years' to end separatist war
Ukraine's defence minister warned today it may take years to settle the ex-Soviet republic's pro-Russian separatist conflict that has killed nearly 9,200 people and plunged Moscow's relations with the West to a
post-Cold War low.
Stepan Poltorak also accused Russia of keeping several thousand troops in the war-torn region and said his impoverished country was in dire need of Western weapons to help quash the two-year revolt.
"In my opinion, it will take years," Poltorak told a small group of reporters when asked how long it may take to resolve the war.
