The Delhi police has written to the state government saying that it cannot give permission for the Car Free Day event on October 22. According to the letter, the police has objected to the event keeping in mind the festival of Dusshera. However, state transport minister Gopal Rai said that he will approach lieutenant governor Najeeb Jung regarding the matter.

Questioning Delhi Police's refusal, Rai said an elected government doesn't "need to take permission", but informs police about its decisions. Rai said he would discuss the merits of the government's campaign for public transport and against pollution with Jung, and apprise him of the situation.
