Declaring November 26 as the Constitution Day, government has lined up a host of activities on Thursday to pay tribute to B R Ambedkar, including a "special" session of Parliament in which lawmakers will pay tribute to the Dalit icon, who played a seminal role in framing the Constitution.

The Constitution Day events will be a part of the year-long nationwide celebrations to mark the 125th birth anniversary of Ambedkar.

The government has asked officials to read out the preamble of the Constitution on November 26, government sources said. The Constitution was adopted on this day in 1949 before it came into force on January 26, 1950.

The following day, on Friday, at 4 pm, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will reply to a debate on Constitution Day,  according to a highly-placed political source. This will be followed by another debate at around 7 pm, in the Rajya Sabga by Arun Jaitley, who is the Leader of the Upper House.

Parliament will be illuminated on November 26, and 27 to commemorate Constitution Day. On the directions from the PMO, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu has ordered that booklets on the Constitution will be distributed to the members of parliament. The booklet has been printed in all regional languages.
