Hindu Sena activists today protested outside Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan's residence in suburban Bandra against his remarks on intolerance even as security for the actor was beefed up. At least seven activists of the Hindu Sena gathered outside the residence of Aamir at Pali Hill around 4 pm and tried to stage a protest, DCP (Detection) Dhananjay Kulkarni said.

Five activists were detained by Khar police, Kulkarni said, adding a probe is on against those detained and appropriate action would be taken. "We have provided adequate police security to the actor," the DCP said.

Khan had yesterday said he was "alarmed" by a number of incidents and his wife Kiran Rao even suggested that they should leave the country considering growing intolerance.

Also, the 50-year-old actor supported those returning their awards, saying one of the ways for creative people to express their dissatisfaction or disappointment is to return their awards. 18:35   Drowning of Russian jet by Turkey is a stab in the back: Putin
Russian president Vladimir Putin says downing of Russian jet over Syria is a stab in the back. "Shooting down of Russian jet will have "serious consequences" for Moscow's relations with Turkey," Putin says.

Earlier, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the Kremlin considers it incorrect to talk about any consequences for Russian-Turkish relations after the incident with Russia's Sukhoi Su-24 warplane. "It would be wrong now to give any assessments, assumptions or make any conclusions before we get a full picture," Peskov said in reply to a question about the prospects of relations between Moscow and Ankara.

"We have to be patient, it is a very serious incident, but again, without all of the information it is impossible to say anything and it would be wrong," he said.

The Kremlin has no idea if Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov's visit to Turkey, due on Wednesday, November 25 will be canceled.

17:40   NATO to hold emergency meeting today on Russian jet shot down by Turkey
NATO will hold an emergency meeting on the shooting down of a Russian fighter plane by Turkey. This is the first time that a Nato country and Moscow have exchanged direct fire over the crisis in Syria.

Ankara and the Kremlin gave conflicting accounts of the incident, which appears to have occurred in an area near the Turkish-Syrian border straddling Iskenderun and Latakia.

The Turkish military said it scrambled two F-16 fighter jets after a plane penetrated Turkish airspace in the province of Hatay at 9.20am on Tuesday morning, warning it to leave 10 times in five minutes before it was shot down.

Russias defence ministry, in a series of tweets, confirmed a Russian Su-24 had been shot down, but insisted the plane had never left Syrian airspace and claimed that fire from the ground was responsible. At all times, the Su-24 was exclusively over the territory of Syria, the defence ministry said.

A record numbers have complained to the press industry watchdog after The Sun made a claim that one fifth of British Muslims had "sympathy for jihadis'.

The British tabloid's claim, in a front page headline, was based on a survey of Muslim and non-Muslim opinions commissioned in the wake of the Paris attacks. The study found that 19 per cent of Muslims expressed at least "some sympathy' with young Muslims who had left the UK to join fighters in Syria.

But the newspaper's interpretation of the poll data was called into question by numerous critics who noted that an earlier survey for Sky News had shown that more than 30 per cent of non-Muslims had shown a degree of sympathy with young Muslims fighting in Syria. Read more

It's Glasnost for the BJP after its debacle in Bihar. After a year-and-a-half in government, the BJP is finally becoming more accessible to the Indian media. We can now tell you that five hi-tech TV studios equipped with all the requisite paraphernalia are being constructed inside the BJP national headquarters at 10 Ashoka Road in New Delhi.

This is to help TV news channels access BJP spokespersons at a short notice. After the BJP press briefing on any major events of the party like the national executive meetings or parliamentary board meetings - the spokespersons will use these studios to have live broadcasts. The studios are likely to have Atal Bihar Vajpayee or LK Advani or the party symbol -- the lotus -- with the name of the party written in English and Hindi, as a backdrop. The approximate cost to construct the five studios is Rs 25 lakh.

14:46   Modi becomes 1st PM to pay homage at INA memorial in Singapore
PM Narendra Modi pays homage to those who sacrificed their lives for India's freedom at the Indian National Army memorial in Singapore.

The INA memorial was rebuilt in 1995 by the National Heritage Board of the Singapore government to observe the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II.

In 1946, Nehru visited the original INA memorial at the Esplanade, which was later demolished by India's then viceroy Lord Mountbatten.

Interestingly, since Nehru was yet to hold office and since no other prime minister visited the memorial since, Modi is the first Indian prime minister to visit the memorial.

The Indian diaspora in Singapore had contributed to the construction of the monument with financial donations.

In fact, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose had laid the foundation stone for the original memorial, which was built during the Japanese Occupation on 8 July 1945. Now, a signboard is put in the Esplanade Park to guide tourists to "Site of the Former INA Monument". Singapore will celebrate its 50th anniversary of its Independence on August 9, 2015. Modi began the process of declassification of secret files related to Subhas Chandra Bose beginning 23 January (Bose's birthday) next year, in a move he explained saying, "there is no need to strangle history".

14:35   Modi invites Singapore firms to invest in Navratna PSUs
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today invited investors in Singapore to participate in the proposed divestment of Navratna PSUs and sought the Singaporean government's help in building at least 20 smart cities.

In wide-ranging discussions with Singapore leaders, including its Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and President Tony Tan Keng, Modi stressed on the idea to 'create many Singapores' within India.

He also pitched for issuance of rupee bonds and infrastructure bonds in Singapore. Besides, Modi sought faster completion of Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) to create a new economic block within Asia. The Prime Minister also invited his Singaporean counterpart to visit India, especially Gujarat to see with his entire family the Asiatic lion, which forms part of the symbol of Singapore.

Singapore sought doubling of flights to India while Modi wanted the city-state to play a key role in upgradation of railway stations in India. At the media briefing about Modi's meetings here, Secretary (East) at the Ministry of External Affairs Anil Wadhwa said there were broadly 14-15 key issues including skills development, urban development, tourism, civil aviation and financial services, that were discussed in the meetings the Prime Minister has had.

14:26   Why the DMK will not use Prashant Kishor
Probably the only political party that hasn't summoned the services of master strategist Prashant Kishor is the DMK. And the reason is this: The DMK does not want to spoil its chances in the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly elections by getting Prashant Kishor to strategise for it because it feels AIADMK chief and J Jayalalitha would use it to her benefit by pointing out that the DMK depends more on a Hindi speaking North Indian for its public relations exercise. Issues and personalities are different in Tamil Nadu as compared to Bihar as well. A senior BJP leader says that Kishor's true colours will emerge soon with an exposure by the Lalu camp.

Kishor, is the man who hardsold brand Narendra Modi during the 2012 assembly polls in Gujarat and last years general elections and also helped craft Nitish Kumars campaign strategy in Bihar that saw him trump his arch foe in the state assembly election.

14:03   No country better than India for Muslims, says BJP's Shahnawaz Hussain
BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain holds forth on Aamir Khan's 'intolerant' India comment. "A small incident happens in a country of 121 crore people, but it is not alright to malign our 'Incredible India' over the same. No country is better than India for Muslims. We believe Rahul Gandhi should  not teach India tolerance," he said. To Aamir Khan, Hussain said, "Don't forget India made you a star."

Reacting to actor Aamir Khan's remarks on intolerance in India, the ruling BJP said there was little truth to Khan's remarks and that India was, is, and always will be a tolerant nation. "Moving out of the nation, is an individual's choice,' the BJP said.

Khan's comments on growing intolerance have provoked sharp reactions on Twitter with his industry colleagues Anupam Kher and Ram Gopal Varma, berating him, asking "When did 'Incredible India' become 'Intolerant India' for you".

The 50-year-old "PK" star during his outing at an award function last evening in the national capital had said he has been "alarmed" by a number of incidents and his wife Kiran Rao even suggested that they should probably leave the country. Kher, who shared screen space with Aamir in "Dil", "Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin" among others, hit out at him saying, "India has made him what he is".

The winter session of Parliament promises to begin with a bang on Thursday. The Congress has given notice for a discussion on intolerance in the Lok Sabha, says leader of the opposition in the lower house, Mallikarjun Kharge.

The party move comes in the aftermath of the Aamir Khan's statement at an award ceremony yesterday, where he said he was "alarmed" by a number of incidences and his wife Kiran Rao had wondered if they should move out of India.

He also virtually supported those returning their awards, saying one of the ways for creative people to express their dissatisfaction or disappointment is to return their awards.

The BJP said there was little truth to Khan's remarks and that India was, is, and always will be a tolerant nation. "Moving out of the nation, is an individual's choice," party spokesperson Nalin Kohli said.

BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain added that some isolated extreme incidents should not be allowed to define India and took a dig at Aamir Khan wife's suggestion to leave India. "Don't forget India made you a star," Hussain said.

13:15   BJP wants climate change to be debated in Parliament
Former environment minister Jairam Ramesh on Monday met Prakash Javdekar and briefed him on the Congress party's points that need to be articulated at the Climate Change conference. Javdekar says that many political leaders have keen interest in climate change and in fact, these leaders want a day-long discussion in Parliament on the subject. But Congress, which is likely to disrupt this session of parliament as well, may not allow climate change to be discussed in the Lok Sabha.

13:04   How Modi's foreign trips helps environment minister Javdekar
Environment Minister Prakash Javdekar has taken up the task of putting forth the Indian perspective to counter criticism made by the US administration that India's consumption of coal is way too high causing environmental pollution in the region.

World leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be heading to Paris later this month for COP21, the United Nations' conference on climate change. The challenge for 196 countries is to reach a legally binding agreement to keep global warming below 2 degree Celsius.

Javdekar drew up a calendar to brief the Congress and the Left parties by Wednesday and regional  parties thereafter before he leaves for Paris on November 27 for the Climate Conference.

Today, Javdekar held organised a briefing for the electronic and print media on the conference. Javdekar says that Narendra Modi's foreign visits and the recent Africa summit in Delhi had helped foster the right image ahead of the Climate Change conference.

He said India has regained its lost status in the global arena with Modi meeting foreign heads making it easier ahead of Javdekar's visit to Paris where he has to interact with 160 countries representatives.

12:45   What Aamir Khan is saying, whole world is saying: Cong
Coming out in support of Bollywood star Aamir Khan's remarks on intolerance, the Congress today said what the actor is saying, the whole world is saying and asked the current dispensation to pay heed to the message.

"What Aamir Khan, one of the most respected actor, has said in the presence of many senior BJP people is what the whole world is saying, all of India is saying, all right- minded people are saying," Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said today.

Khan, at an award ceremony yesterday, had said that he was "alarmed" by a number of incidences and his wife Kiran Rao had wondered if they should move out of India.

He also virtually supported those returning their awards, saying one of the ways for creative people to express their dissatisfaction or disappointment is to return their awards.

Taking a dig at BJP, Singhvi said Khan should not be branded as a Congress man for raising the intolerance issue. "I only hope and trust that he will not be referred to as a Congress man. I will only hope and trust he will not be referred to in derogatory terms," the Rajya Sabha MP said. "These are the people whose conscience is speaking. Instead of criticising them, heed should be paid to the message, not shooting the messenger," he added.

12:34   Why the Ram Mandir may be back on the agenda for BJP
Senior BJP leader Dr Murli Manohar Joshi is now distancing himself from LK Advani on the Bihar debacle.

Two days after the crushing defeat in the crucial polls and a day before Diwali, the veterans  -- Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, Yashwant Sinha -- lashed out at Team Modi in a statement saying, "To say that everyone is responsible for the defeat in Bihar is to ensure that no one is held responsible. It shows that those who would have appropriated credit if the party had won are bent on shrugging off responsibility for the disastrous showing in Bihar.""

The bonhomie within the old guard seems to have vanished now.

An insider in the party says that Dr Joshi after having two rounds of discussions with RSS leaders will be heading to its headquarters in Nagpur. The meeting has been organised by by Nitin Gadkari and is aimed at ironing out the differences between BJP leaders and Dr Murli Manohar Joshi.

In next few days BJP president Amit Shah is also set to convene the Margadharshak Mandal where issues will be sorted out and a new policy direction towards implementation of BJP's national manifesto will be
deliberated. In short the revival of Ram Mandir might may well be discussed at the Margardharshak Mandal.

Party insiders say that right wing organisations like the Vishva Hindu Parishad and the Sangh Parivar have raised the issue of the Ram Temple construction time and again, but after the Bihar poll results the issue may actually gain currency.

12:22   Don't brand Aamir unpatriotic because he questioned Modi: Rahul tells BJP
Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi weighs in on Aamir Khan's statement on the increasing intolerance in the country. The @OfficeOfRG tweeted:  "Instead of branding all those who question the government and Modiji as unpatriotic, anti-national or motivated the govt would do better to reach out to people to understand what's disturbing them. That's the way to solve problems in India - not by bullying, threatening & abusing!"

Aamir Khan had on Monday said that he has been "alarmed" by a number of incidences and his wife Kiran Rao even suggested that they should probably leave the country.

He also virtually supported those returning their awards, saying one of the ways for creative people to express their dissatisfaction or disappointment is to return their awards.

"As an individual, as part of this country as a citizen, we read in the papers what is happening, we see it on the news and certainly, I have been alarmed. I can't deny. I have been alarmed by a number of incidents," he had said.

BJP today insisted that some isolated extreme incidents should not be allowed to define India and took a dig at his wife's suggestion to leave India, saying people move out for many reasons, including for saving taxes.

The ruling party also reminded Khan that his last movie 'PK' was a resounding box office success despite protests by some right wing outfits, stressing that it was a example of how tolerant Indian society is.

10:30   Naxals torch passenger bus in Chhattisgarh; none hurt
Naxals torched a private travel bus in Chhattisgarh's insurgency-hit Sukma district, after asking its passengers to alight, police said today.

Rebels also fired upon an anti-landmine vehicle in which security forces had rushed to the spot to rescue the passengers.

However, no one was hurt in the incident, they said.

The incident occurred last night near restive Tahakwada village on NH-30 under Tongpal Police Station limits, a short distance from the spot where 15 security men and a civilian were killed in a Maoist ambush in April last year, a senior police official told PTI.

The bus was heading to Hyderabad from Jagdalpur (Bastars district headquarter) when it was attacked.

Around 50 cadres, most of them armed, surrounded the bus in a thickly forested patch near Tahakwada and asked the passengers to get down before setting it ablaze, he said.

09:55   India seeks Swiss help in probing Congress leader Preneet Kaur's accounts
As Indian tax authorities continue their probe into Swiss bank accounts of several citizens, Switzerland today said India has sought assistance in the investigations into accounts allegedly held by former Congress minister Preneet Kaur and her son Raninder Singh.

As per the Swiss norms for 'assistance' in tax matters, which could involve sharing of account and other details, the Federal Tax Administration (FTA) of Switzerland also asked Kaur and Singh to file an appeal within ten days  for "exercise of the right to be heard".

The Swiss tax department has made these disclosures in two separate notifications published today in the Switzerland government's federal gazette.

The notifications did not disclose further details about the two, except for their nationality and dates of birth. No immediate comments could be obtained from Kaur and her son.

Earlier when her name had come up in a leaked HSBC list, Kaur had denied having any account in her name with any foreign bank.

She had also said that her statement was recorded earlier by the tax authorities, but she was not shown any document which might indicate having a foreign bank account or a trust.

09:40   US issues global travel alert as manhunt continues for Paris attackers
Citing 'increased terrorist threats' from militant groups in various regions of the world, the US State Department issued a global alert on Monday for Americans planning to travel following deadly militant attacks in France and Mali.

As millions of Americans prepare to travel for the US Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday, the agency said potential attackers could target private or government interests.

In the statement on its website, the State Department said: "Current information suggests that (Islamic State), al-Qaeda, Boko Haram, and other terrorist groups continue to plan terrorist attacks in multiple regions."

Although it did not mention the Nov. 13 Paris attacks claimed by the Islamic State group in which 130 died, the department noted that militants had carried out attacks in France, Nigeria, Denmark, Turkey, and Mali during the past year.

"Authorities believe the likelihood of terror attacks will continue as members of (Islamic State) return from Syria and Iraq," it said. "Additionally, there is a continuing threat from unaffiliated persons planning attacks inspired by major terrorist organizations but conducted on an individual basis."

France and Belgium have launched a manhunt following the attacks in Paris, with a focus on Brussels barkeeper Salah Abdeslam, 26, who returned to the city from Paris hours after the attacks and is still at large.

09:03   Carson joins Trump in claiming US Muslims cheered 9/11
Republican presidential hopeful Ben Carson followed rival Donald Trump's lead in saying he too saw a video of Arab Americans cheering as New York's twin towers collapsed on September 11, 2001.

Within days of the 9/11 attacks, police, fact-checkers and US media had debunked the rumors that people were cheering from rooftops of Jersey City, across the river from Manhattan.

But Trump, the billionaire frontrunner for the Republican nomination, suddenly revived the story on the campaign trail Saturday, eight days after deadly attacks in Paris.

"I watched when the World Trade Center came tumbling down. And I watched in Jersey City, New Jersey, where thousands and thousands of people were cheering as that building was coming down," Trump told a rally in Alabama.

Carson, who is currently Trump's top rival in the race, told reporters a similar story yesterday.

Asked whether he had seen footage of American Muslims in New Jersey cheering on 9/11, Carson said "I saw the film of it, yes." Pressed which footage he saw, he said "the newsreels."

09:01   Suicide vest found in Paris raises possible link to suspect
A street cleaner found an explosive vest similar to those used in the Paris attacks near the place where a suspect's mobile phone had been found, raising the possibility that he aborted his mission, either ditching a malfunctioning vest or fleeing in fear.

The discovery of the vest came as Belgium's prime minister cited a "serious and imminent" threat justifying keeping the highest alert level operational for at least another week.

The security measures, already in place for three days, have severely disrupted normal life in the capital.

In France, police said an explosive vest -- without a detonator -- was found by a street cleaner in a pile of rubble in Chatillon-Montrouge, on the southern edge of Paris and a considerable distance from the sites of the attacks on the Right Bank of the Seine to the north.

A police official later said the vest contained bolts and the same type of explosives (TATP) as those used in the November 13 Paris attacks that claimed 130 lives and left hundreds wounded.

Britain's Royal Air Force has released details of a series of strikes against Islamic State in Iraq, as Prime Minister David Cameron said he believed the UK should join France in bombing the terrorist group in Syria.

Two Tornado GR4 jets used bombs to destroy an armed vehicle and a stockpile of home-made explosives yesterday, the UK Ministry of Defence said.

Reaper drones also carried out strikes targeting a "large group of terrorists" at a weapons cache, officials said. The strikes come as Cameron said he believed the UK should join France and other nations in bombing the IS in Syria too.

"I firmly support the action that [French] President Hollande has taken to strike ISIL in Syria and it is my firm conviction that Britain should do so too. Of course that willbe a decision for Parliament to make," he said.
