The mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, gave orders for the Eiffel Tower to be lit up with the national colors for three days, a spokeswoman for the city said on Monday.

After two days of staying dark, the Eiffel Tower will be lit from 7 pm to 1 am local time on Monday, then from nightfall to 1 am on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The spokeswoman said Hidalgo made the decision after seeing several monuments across the world paying tribute to France, including the Sydney Opera House and 1 World Trade Center in New York City.

The Eiffel Tower will also be covered with the citys motto, "Fluctuat Nec Mergitur", Latin for "Tossed but not sunk".
