In a landmark judgement today, the Kerala high court has observed that being a Maoist is not a crime. The court ruled that only when the laws are broken do they become illegal activities.

Justice A Mushtaq observed that a person cannot be remanded to custody simply for being a Maoist.

The court delivered the judgement in a case related to the detention of a man suspected to be a Maoist.

The court also ordered that a compensation be given of Rs 1 lakh in the case.
