23:53   ISIS expands hold in Syria's ancient Palmyra
Iraqi security officials said on Friday that ISIS took control of Husayba -- a small town about 11 miles (17 kilometers) east of Ramadi and about 14 miles (22 kilometers) west of Habbaniya -- in an assault that involved car bombs and heavy machine gun fire.

It's the terror group's latest push east since they seized the key city of Ramadi, a milestone that a U.S. State Department official acknowledged is a major blow in coalition efforts to defeat ISIS.

Witnesses said the militants summarily executed people in the street whom they accused of working with the government.

"They were killing anyone who they accused of being with the police or the army," one witness told CNN.

The militants now appear to be heading towards al Khalidiya, the last town between Ramadi and Habbaniya's military base and airbase.

Habbaniya base has been designated a staging point for Iraqi security forces and Shiite militias in their attempt to retake Ramadi and the rest of Anbar province.

In recent days, thousands of people have crossed the Bzebiz Bridge, hoping that they'll be safer in Baghdad.

23:29   Hezbollah says Saudi 'responsible' for mosque bombing
Lebanon's powerful Shiite Hezbollah movement said on today Sunni-ruled Saudi Arabia was "totally responsible" for a suicide bombing at a Shiite mosque in the Gulf kingdom.

The Islamic State group said it was behind the attack in the Shiite-populated Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia that killed and wounded several people during the main Friday weekly prayers.

"Hezbollah holds Saudi authorities totally responsible for this ugly crime," the group said in a statement condemning the bombing.

It accused the ultra-conservative Sunni-majority kingdom of "sponsoring and backing criminal murderers" and of "failing to protect" its Shiite citizens who have long complained of marginalisation.

Hezbollah also charged that the Saudi authorities "incited against them (Shiites) from the minbars (pulpits) of mosques and in the media".

Saudi Arabia described the attack as a "terrorist" act aimed at undermining national unity.

22:44   Fire on oil rig in Gulf of Mexico
The US Coast Guard rescued 28 oil workers from an offshore platform in the Gulf Of Mexico on today after a fire broke out.

No one was reported hurt in the incident, but pilots noted a 1.4 nautical mile (2.6 kilometer) "rainbow sheen" on the water.

"The well was shut in and production has ceased," a Coast Guard statement said.

"The platform has an estimated 4,000 barrels of crude oil on board in storage tanks.

"Initial response vessels are on scene with additional vessels en route."

The rig is in the Breton Sound, southeast of New Orleans, near a bank of islands that form the Breton National Wildlife Refuge.

It was not immediately clear if Friday's incident would cause large-scale pollution.

19:35   Mars mission makes India top ranking space power: China report
India's accomplishment in becoming the only Asian country to send a spacecraft to Mars has earned it a place in the top rankings of space-faring nations, a report by a Chinese research institution has said.

The US, Europe, Russia, China, Japan and India are the leading powers in space, the Beijing Institute of Space Science and Technology Information, affiliated to the China Academy of Space Technology, said in a report.

India became the first Asian country to successfully send a probe to Mars in 2014, marking a breakthrough in its space capability, state-run Xinhua news agency quoted the report as saying. The institute for the first time evaluated the space capabilities of 20 countries and regions across six aspects: strategy, product systems, infrastructure, industrial scale, innovation and international influence.

China's space capabilities are ranked the fourth in the world, and the gap between the leading powers is narrowing, the report said. Last year saw a record 92 launches around the world, with 262 spacecraft put into orbit, it said. The US' status as the only superpower in space is unshakable, but the gap between the US and other nations is narrowing, it said.

18:57   Rajnath waits it out at dais as auditorium plunges into darkness
In the second security scare for Rajnath Singh at a CRPF building in New Delhi, the Union Home Minister had to spend anxious minutes in a dark hall today as the power of the building, where he had gone to attend a BSF function, tripped just before his arrival.

The CRPF building where Singh was the chief guest at the Border Security Force investiture ceremony plunged into darkness minutes before his arrival and full power could not be restored even after an hour he left the venue.

Sources said the dark auditorium is a security scare for any VIP even if his security is accompanying him.

An unnerved Singh sat on the dais of the pitch dark large room for ten minutes after which some backup lights came and lit the room partially.

It is not the first time, Singh has to encounter such an embarrassing situation in the CRPF building in Vasant Kunj, as on April 9 the lift carrying him got stuck and he had to be evacuated through its roof.

With no signs of power being restored in the large hall, senior officials were seen scrambling for some backup as the hall went into complete darkness just before Singh's arrival.

17:12   Omar hits out at PDP-BJP govt over Parrikar's remark
Working president of the Opposition National Conference, Omar Abdullah today hit out at PDP-BJP coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir over the remarks of Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on the strategy of eliminating militants in the state.

"Looks like (Chief Minister) Mufti (Mohammad) Syed (sic) is reviving & empowering the Ikhwanis (counter-insurgents). That's the only way to carry out 'terrorists killing terrorists' policy of MOD," Omar tweeted.

He was referring to the statement made by Parrikar in an interview with an English daily.

"Our proactive attitude is to identify terrorists and then effectively neutralise them. Every case is handled firmly with clear-cut intelligence for targeted kills.

"We ensure minimal collateral damage. You have to neutralise terrorist through terrorist only. Why my soldier has to do it all the time?" Parrikar had said.

Several groups of counter-insurgents, known as Ikhwanis in Kashmir, actively helped the security forces to tackle militancy in the valley during second half of 1990s and early 2000s.

However, the groups were disbanded and many of the cadres were absorbed in regular forces like army and police when PDP-Congress coalition government came to power in 2002.

The former Press Council chairman has faced criticism on social media in January after he tweeted that Shazia Ilmi was more beautiful than Kiran Bedi and if Shazia was made the CM candidate for Delhi assembly polls, BJP would have won the elections.

The former Press Council chief further said in his tweet that people vote for beautiful faces, adding, someone like him who does not vote would also have voted for Shazia.

Katju tweeted a clarification after suitable outrage on Twitter, and urged his critics to develop a sense of humour and claimed that his remarks were in a lighter vein and should be seen as such.

15:24   J-K separatist Mirwaiz Farooq's supporters raise Pak, LeT flags
Moderate Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq's supporters raise Pakistan Flags and Lashkar-e-Taiba flags in Srinagar.

Authorities yesterday, placed Mirwaiz under house arrest to prevent him from attending today's rally to commemorate the death anniversary of his father, who was assassinated in 1990.

"Mirwaiz was placed under house arrest this morning, thus preventing him from attending Hafta Shahadat (martyrdom week) programme," a Hurriyat spokesman said.

"It is state-sponsored terrorism and an example of aggressive politics.
When Kashmiris were peacefully organizing Hafta Shahadat to remember martyrs, placing the Mirwaiz under house arrest was akin to rubbing salt over wounds of Kashmiris and playing with their emotions," the spokesman said.

The moderate Hurriyat Conference had planned a rally at Eidgah to pay tributes to Mirwaiz's father Moulvi Mohammad Farooq and Hurriyat leader Abdul Gani Lone on their death anniversary today.

Last month, an FIR was filed against hardline separatist leader, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Masarat Alam Bhat and other separatist leaders 'for provocative  activities and hoisting Pakistan flag' in Srinagar. Geelani's supporters also shouted anti-India and pro-Pak slogans.

11:34   Kerji vs Jung: LG can appoint, transfer officers without consulting CM, says Centre
In the ongoing battle for supremacy between Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Lt Governor Najeeb Jung, for now the winning stakes are with Jung.

The Union Home Ministry issued a gazette notification specifying the role and powers of the Lt Governor and Kejriwal has been told clearly by the central government that it is not essential for him to be consulted by the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, on matters like the appointment of key bureaucrats.

The gazette, which is the Centre's response to the demarcation of authority between the Kejriwal and Jung says, the Lieutenant Governor, "may, in his discretion, obtain the views of the Chief Minister... wherever he deems it appropriate."

The gazette is an attempt to finally put an end to the longstanding feud between the Chief Minister and the Lieutenant Governor, who have spent the last week appointing and removing bureaucrats to prove who is really entitled to call the shots.

The Centre's statement endorses what the Lieutenant Governor has claimed all along - that as the representative of the union government in Delhi, he is the authority for the Delhi Police, issues related to Land, and the postings of key government officers.

The notification comes after discussions between Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

08:23   Terror suspect wanted in US wins Irish case, walks free
An Algerian-born terror suspect wanted in the United States walked free from a Dublin court after five years behind bars and a two-year legal battle against extradition.

US authorities had sought to convict Ali Charaf Damache, 50, on two counts of conspiring to develop a European terror cell and to aid Pakistan-based terrorists.

He had been held without bail in Ireland since March 2010 but walked free from Dublin High Court yesterday after Justice Aileen Donnelly delivered a 333-page judgement that criticised Irish prosecutors and potentially cruel US prison conditions.

04:08   Obama: We're not losing against ISIS
Assessing his war on ISIS after the group overtook the key Iraqi city of Ramadi, President Barack Obama said in an interview this week his strategy against the terrorists isn't failing.

"I don't think we're losing," Obama said in an interview with The Atlantic magazine.

Calling the fall of Ramadi, the capital of Anbar province, a "tactical setback," Obama pinned the blame on poorly trained and organized Iraqi Defense Forces.

"The training of Iraqi security forces, the fortifications, the command-and-control systems are not happening fast enough in Anbar, in the Sunni parts of the country," he told interviewer Jeffrey Goldberg.

As ISIS takes ground in Sunni-dominated Anbar, the administration has worked to bolster Iraqi security forces, including backing multi-sectarian forces termed "Popular Mobilization Units" that include Shia fighters. Administration officials insist those forces must remain under the control of the central Iraqi government, a proposition that in the past has proven difficult.

Obama said in his interview it was a "source of concern" that Sunni fighters haven't become more engaged in fighting ISIS.

02:37   Santa Barbara oil spill: Crude flowed 'well below' capacity in ruptured pipe
The onshore pipeline behind this week's Santa Barbara oil spill was operating "well below its maximum operating capacity" when it ruptured and leaked more than 100,000 gallons of crude on coastal lands and into the ocean, the oil company said Thursday.

What caused the oil spill, however, remained under investigation Thursday.

The underground oil pipeline was carrying 1,300 barrels an hour, below its maximum capacity of 2,000 barrels an hour, said Rick McMichael of Plains All American Pipeline.

"Line 901 was not operating at capacity before or during the release," McMichael told reporters.

Crews continued to clean beaches and coastal waters Thursday, and officials reported that the leak killed an undisclosed number of lobsters, kelp bass and marine invertebrates.

As of Thursday, vessels had skimmed 7,770 gallons of oily water from the ocean, McMichael said.

Eighteen vessels were expected to scour the ocean surface Thursday, he said.

01:34   NSA planned hack of Google app store: report
The US National Security Agency developed plans to hack into data links to app stores operated by Google and Samsung to plant spyware on smartphones, a media report said today.

The online news site The Intercept said US intelligence developed the plan with allies in Britain, Canada, New Zealand and Australia, a group known as the "Five Eyes" alliance.

The report, based on a document leaked by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, said the plan aimed to step up surveillance efforts on smartphones.

The plan appeared to have been discussed at meetings involving the intelligence services in 2011 and 2012, according to the classified document.

The project called "Irritant Horn" would allow the agencies to hijack data connections to app stores and surreptitiously implant malicious software on smartphones that would allow for data to be harvested.

The intelligence agencies could also use the spyware to send misinformation to targets to confuse potential adversaries, according to the report.

The Intercept said the plan was motivated in part by concerns about the possibility of "another Arab Spring," or the spread of popular movements.

01:19   Macedonian PM plane makes emergency landing in Zurich
A jet carrying Macedonian Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski made an emergency landing in Zurich today due to technical problems but no one was hurt in the incident, a spokesman said.

"The (technical) failure manifested as a strong noise, from an unknown origin, and it was followed by perturbation of the cabin pressure," a government spokesman told reporters in Skopje.

As it was impossible to restore normal cabin pressure, the pilot decided to land at the nearest airport.

No passager or crew member was hurt in the incident and the prime minister was to return to Skopje with another plane, spokesman Aleksandar Gjorgiev said without elaborating.

The government's Learjet 60 plane was bought in  2005.

Gruevski was returning home from Strasbourg where he held talks with opposition leader Zoran Zaev, brokered by the European Parliament, in a bid to end a deep political crisis in his country.

00:45   Ireland prepares for historic vote on same-sex marriage
Ireland is holding a landmark vote Friday on whether to change its constitution to allow same-sex marriage.

If the referendum is passed, Ireland will become the first country in the world to adopt same-sex marriage through a popular vote.

When they go to the polls, Ireland's voters will be asked to approve this statement: "Marriage may be contracted in accordance with law by two persons without distinction as to their sex."

If more say "yes" than say "no," the change to the constitution will give gay and lesbian couples the right to civil marriage, but not to be wed in a church.

As in many other countries around the world, the issue is a polarizing one. And the referendum will be a test of whether in Ireland, a majority Catholic nation, more liberal thinking wins out over conservative, traditional leanings.

00:15   Bin Laden's reading habits revealed
On Wednesday morning, the US Office of the Director of National Intelligence released an unprecedented number of documents from what U.S. officials have described as the treasure-trove picked up by the SEALs at bin Laden's compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, on May 2, 2011.

Bin Laden's digital library is that of an avid reader whose tastes ran from "Obama's Wars," Bob Woodward's account of how the Obama administration surged US troops in Afghanistan in 2009 and 2010, to Noam Chomsky as well as someone who had a pronounced interest in how Western think tanks and academic institutions were analyzing al Qaeda.

Bin Laden was a meticulous editor, and some of the memos he wrote were revised as many as 50 times. Of the thousands of versions of documents recovered from computers and digital media that the SEALs retrieved at bin Laden's compound, the final tally numbers several hundred documents.

The new documents show how bin Laden reacted to the events of the Arab Spring, which was roiling the Middle East in the months before his death. While bin Laden had nothing to say publicly about the momentous events in the Middle East, privately he wrote lengthy memos analyzing what was happening, pointing to the "new factor" of "the information technology revolution" that had helped spur the revolutions and characterizing them as "the most important events" in the Muslim world "in centuries."
